In light of the July 2002 announcements about the findings of health risks of conjugated estrogen/progestin drugs, what are your thoughts for thyroid patients? -- Mary Shomon

DR. DAVID BROWNSTEIN ANSWERS

Mary, I have been lecturing and writing about the dangers of synthetic hormones for years. My comments to this study can be summed up in a few words: “It is about time.” Progestins (i.e., Provera) are dangerous drugs that should not be prescribed. Progestins have been shown in numerous studies to increase breast cancer rates, blood clots, heart attacks and other deleterious conditions. They also can lead to a hypothyroid condition by inhibiting the conversion of T4 into T3. Synthetic estrogens have also been shown to inhibit the conversion of T4 into T3, often leading to thyroid problems. I have treated many women for thyroid problems by simply having them eliminate the synthetic hormone in their regimen. Often times, their thyroid problems will resolve. One must look at the whole picture in treating patients. Natural hormones are easier for the body to use and are much safer than synthetic hormones. (July, 2002)
