Levoxyl Recalled, July 2003
Pill Mixup Means Patients Are Getting Animal Drugs

by Mary Shomon

Thyroid drug Levoxyl is facing a recall.

According to Safety Alerts, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported that on June 18, 2003, King Pharmaceuticals, Inc. initiated a recall of Levoxyl in the 112 mcg size.

Product: Levoxyl (Levothyroxine Sodium Tablets), 112 mcg, 2,639 bottles of the 1000 tablet size, distributed around the nation. Lot No. 7941, Expiration Date 05/2004.

Reason: King has had a tablet mixup. The bottles that were supposed to contain Levoxyl 112 mcg actually had Levoxyl as well as Soloxine 0.2 mg tablets. (Soloxine is a version of levothyroxine that they use for animals.)

Levoxyl also had a recall in May of 2003, and recalls in June 2002, and October of 2001, among others.

Note: If you're confused about the various thyroid medicines for hypothyroidism, my book, Living Well With Hypothyroidism: What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You...That You Need to Know, a bestseller in its 16th printing, can help unravel the mystery.
