Multiple Sclerosis Rising Among U.S. Women (January 2002)
According to researchers at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of US women living with multiple sclerosis (MS) seems to have risen in the past 20 years. Data from national surveys shows that the number of MS cases increased 50% between 1982 and the mid-1990s – from the rate of 75 cases per 100,000 women to 113 per 100,000. Men, who typically also have a lower rate of MS versus women, did not have a similar increase.
The researchers do not have definitive reasons behind the increased rates in women, but speculate that there may be one of more of the following reasons: higher rates of MS in general, improved diagnosis, better treatment and longevity for MS patients.
The research team found that for both men and women, the highest prevalence of MS was found among people in their 40s and 50s. MS is more commen among white women, versus women of other races, and geographically is least common in the Southern U.S.
