KEEP YOUR THYROID RESOLUTIONS IN 2003

Is this the year you'll finally lose weight, stop smoking, feel better, even have a baby? Making big changes starts with the smallest steps, and I’ve assembled all the information and tools you need to make 2003 terrific for your health!

TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR NEW YEARS RESOLUTION WORK!

Many of us make New Year's resolutions few; of us keep them. David Junno talks about the most important elements of a good resolution and how we can make our goals stick this year! This is a must-read article for anyone who is starting a new diet with the New Year.

PLANNING TO LOSE WEIGHT IN THE NEW YEAR? EXPERTS SAY, "THINK SLEEP!"

For the millions of us who resolve to lose weight in the New Year, success may hinge on how much we sleep. Sleep? Studies actually suggest that sleep loss may increase hunger and affect the body's metabolism, which may make it more difficult to maintain or lose weight.

ONE TIP TO HELP DOUBLE YOUR WORKOUTS IN 2003

Resolutions for the New Year frequently include commitments for regular exercise. Many gyms will be packed during the first week of January. Crowds begin decreasing within a few weeks. Don't be a dropout! Here's a simple tip that could double your workouts in 2003.

    http://thyroid.about.com/library/weightloss/blsynergy.htm

CAN A SUPPLEMENT HELP YOUR WEIGHT LOSS AND EXERCISE?

If you're one of those people who avoids exercise because of the pain and exhaustion that often comes afterward -- and especially when you don't workout regularly -- adding a safe and effective supplement may make it easier for you to work exercise your schedule.

    http://thyroid.about.com/library/weightloss/blcarnitine.htm

DOING ONE THING EACH DAY CAN MEAN THE DIFFERENCE IN GAINING OR LOSING WEIGHT

Are you taking a step forward, each and every day, going after what you want to achieve or are you simply sitting back waiting for things to come to you? Certified Personal Trainer Shawn C. LeBrun asks if you can imagine how much closer to your goals you would be if you simply resolved to do ONE thing each and every day that would bring you closer to that goal...

    CLOTHES DON'T LIE, SAYS SURVEY

When a few extra pounds start showing up on that bathroom scale, they can easily be attributable to mechanical failure, right? The darned thing must be off. Better get a new scale.

A much more undeniably accurate gauge is the closet, according to a national survey sponsored by Metabolife International Inc., the San Diego- based seller of dietary supplements.*

Sixty percent of respondents to "Motivation" -- the latest in a series of surveys exploring diet and lifestyle in 21st century America -- said "tight-fitting clothes" would be the first thing to get their attention in terms of weight gain. The mirror was second with 29 percent of responses, followed by snide comments (6 percent), the family doctor (4 percent) and, last and least, the scale (3 percent).

So what factor did this latest survey indicate would be most pivotal in terms of inspiring Americans to lose weight? You guessed it. Forty-nine percent said they would fit into more of their clothes. A less practical but perhaps more romantic 40 percent said they would be sexier.

Both men and women cited fitting into their clothes as their No. 1 source of motivation, but more men than women listed a desire to be more sexy as a more important No. 2 factor. The 40 percent who wanted to be sexier were divided between men at 43 percent and women at 37 percent.

So whom would these folks like to impress with a newly acquired svelte body? That depends. Women, at 61 percent, most wanted to impress their spouses and men, at 39 percent, most wanted to impress friends.

When the survey asked respondents where they would like to lose their first five pounds, 67 percent of male respondents answered "waist" and 56 percent of female respondents answered "hips."

Given the motivational factors, respondents were asked what pitfalls were most likely to throw them off track and the overwhelming response was "stress" at 62 percent. Both men and women cited holidays as the No. 2 culprits.

The last question on the survey was similar, except that it asked why a person wouldn't want to do what it takes to lose weight... and the sexes were in accord. Exactly 50 percent said dieting was simply too hard, 34 percent said they lacked time for proper exercise and 17 percent named that villain procrastination.

LACK OF EXERCISE IS MORE LIFE THREATENING THAN BEING OVERWEIGHT

More reason to get up and move comes from a study published in a recent issue of the Annals of Epidemiology. The researchers looked at physical activity and body measurements over a three-year period for more than 9,000 men. The men were ranked according to level of physical activity, and body mass index (BMI), which measures weight-to-height ratio. The men with the least activity had double the risk of dying, and 38 percent more heart disease-related deaths, as the men in the next lowest activity level. Men in the highest activity category lived the longest, regardless of weight.

PAST YO-YO DIETING MAKES IT HARDER TO LOSE NOW

According to the Journal of Behavioral Medicine, middle-aged women who have the greatest chance of weight loss success need to be highly motivated, and will have best results if their target weight is not very different from their actual weight, and if they did not yo-yo diet in the past. In the study, the least successful women, who lost only about 25% of their targeted amount (about 4 pounds) had a history of yo-yo dieting, poor body satisfaction, ad lower self-esteem.

While you can't change your history of yo-yo dieting, you can work on self-esteem and body satisfaction issues, so this points up the importance of getting your head in the right place as part of your overall diet strategy.

    NOTES FROM MARY!

So, how did you do so far through the holidays? I’m up a pound, but I splurged quite a bit (way too many carbs – but Mom’s stuffing is SO good, and there were a few too many cookies with my name on them!) but I’m already on the track to get back down again. I did do my Pilates throughout the holiday, so that was a good thing!

Interestingly, I’ve found that I bloated up and retained water the greatest on those days that I had some wine, so I seem to be particularly sensitive to alcohol. I also found that I was more bloated and retained more water on days when I didn’t get my quotient of water in (I try to drink about 120 ounces a day, between regular water and non-caffeinated herbal teas.) It’s always interesting to learn more about how our bodies respond!

I have SO MANY exciting new things to report in 2003, so stick with me, we’re going to keep losing – and learning — together!

    Live well,

    -- Mary
