Inside Mary Shomon's Medicine Cabinet
People are always writing to me to ask "what drugs and supplements do YOU take?" First off, let's be clear...the optimal combination of supplements for you is the one that will work best for YOU. And what works best for me may not work best for you. I've come up with my own regimen with my physicians and health practitioners, after years of trial and error. Here are the supplements for both thyroid and weight loss that I regularly take most days or times of the year.

New Study Says Don't Go Too Low-Fat on a Weight-Loss Diet
New research shows that a higher unsaturated-fat weight-loss diet that include peanuts and peanut butter can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by 14% compared to baseline, whereas a low-fat diet does not. This ground-breaking study, published in the February issue of American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, proves that the way you lose weight is important for long-term health.

2003's Thyroid Cheers and Jeers -- A Look at the Year's Highs and Lows From a Patient Perspective
I decided to take a look back at some of the news and people I've covered in 2003, and wanted to share with you the highs and lows -- the cheers and jeers so to speak -- of the year! Find out who earns the respect of thyroid patients nationwide, and who gets kicked to the curb!

Winter Exercise Tips
Lynn Bode has these thoughts about why we should keep exercising, even when cold temperatures make you want to hide under the covers! With the temperatures plummeting this time of year, many of us tend to hibernate inside our homes. But, hibernating is for bears. As humans it's important to stay active through all four seasons. Yet, a poll of 5,000 people found that 30 percent get no exercise at all during the Winter months.

The results of a Duke University Medical Center randomized controlled trial strongly suggests that not only can 30 minutes of daily walking prevent weight gain in most sedentary people, but that any further exercise can help weight loss even more!

Now we're being inundated with ads for exercise equipment, low-carb diets and low-calorie foods, there's also a lot of talk about self-control at this time of year. Still, most people have given up on their New Year's resolutiosn already. Psychologist Dr. Pauline Wallin has some terrific thoughts about how to get and keep self-control.

NOTES FROM MARY:

My dieting is going along well, and following my own Thyroid Diet, I'm now officially down 20 pounds since October. Slow, but steady wins the race!! I should be finally hitting my target weight late summer!! I use all the help I can get, and you can find out a bit more at http://www.thyroid-info.com/articles/diethelp.htm.

I'm also working out 3-5 times a week (ok, in a good week! When there are snowstorms, or my child is sick, etc., I don't always hit my target. But I'm trying, and averaging 3-4 times a week!!) It's not always easy to keep up exercise in the winter, but I'm doing my best!

Hope your efforts are going well too!!

Live well!

-- Mary
