BREAKING NEWS! NEW STUDY SHOWS LOW-CARB DIET MORE EFFECTIVE THAN LOW-FAT DIET Just released on May 17, 2004!! People who followed a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet lost more weight than people on a low-fat, low-cholesterol, low-calorie diet during a six-month comparison study at Duke University Medical Center. "This diet can be quite powerful," said lead researcher Will Yancy, M.D., an assistant professor of medicine at Duke University Medical Center. "We found that the low-carb diet was more effective for weight loss," Yancy added. "The weight loss surprised me, to be honest with you. We also found cholesterol levels seemed to improve more on a low-carb diet compared to a low-fat diet."

IS ARMOUR THYROID GOING OFF THE MARKET? WHAT'S THE STATUS OF THYROLAR?
I've been receiving many emails lately from readers asking about Armour Thyroid. "Is Armour going off the market?" asks Lena, who was told by her pharmacist, they're no longer making Armour." "Why can't I get Armour?" asks Theo, who has been to four pharmacies, all of whom say that Armour is backordered and they can't fill his prescription for Armour 1/4 grain (15 mcg). The truth is that the problems with supply are because Armour is more popular than ever, and it's not going off the market. I called the company. Find out more now.

DR. KEN BLANCHARD, ON LEVOTHROID DOSAGE ISSUES
Dr. Ken Blanchard, author of "What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You About Hypothyroidism," wanted to share this important information about Levothroid with site readers.

SUPPLEMENTS THAT MAY HELP WITH WEIGHT LOSS
As you all know, like many people with hypothyroidism, I struggle to get off and keep off extra weight. So whenever I find something I feel is particularly helpful, I am very excited to let you know. I've tried things in the past, and had to let you know that it was a big bust. Like the "starch-blocker" pills (BUST), and at least for me, ephedra... (BIG BUST, PLUS PALPITATIONS!) But my ongoing efforts to continue to lose weight have been going particularly well lately, and I credit two things -- one, I've started doing more weight-bearing exercise, and I'll tell you more about that in an upcoming issue. But the other thing that is helping are some new supplements that I've started, and I love them. First, let me tell you that I have mitral valve prolapse. And so FORGET the stimulating supplements -- they give me major palpitations and I can't take them. but I've been taking a line of 4 products from "Lean for Less" (which are made by Health from The Sun, part of a very good company called Arkopharma), and they are really helping my weight loss stay on track, reducing my appetite, keeping me from being bloated, and I'm having faster weight loss results than usual!! (They are also not expensive -- I don't know if you've seen some of these diet supplements they advertise on tv and such, but come on, $50 or $75 a bottle for a weight loss supplement that is essentially high-dose caffeine is ridiculous.) Keep in mind, I'm eat low-glycemic (low-sugar), very few starchy carbs, mostly lean protein, veggies, some fruit, and very little starches, so it's a combination of optimized thyroid, diet, exercise, and good supplements that seems to be the key. In any case, if you're interested in trying out the products that I'm now devoted to...here's the info.

DO YOU HAVE UNDIAGNOSED HYPOGLYCEMIA?
Cynthia Perkins, M.Ed. takes a look hypoglycemia -- low blood sugar -- a common condition that is often misdiagnosed and overlooked, and causes symptoms including shakiness, headaches, confusion, and more.

DO CALORIES MATTER WHEN YOU ARE GOING LOW-CARB?
Did you know... Can you lose weight and keep it off without cutting calories?

MANY WEEKS OF "GOING HYPO" NOT NECESSARY FOR MOST THYROID CANCER PATIENTS
The unpleasant period of thyroid cancer patients becoming "hypothyroid" for six weeks or more prior to a scan -- a process which also frequently triggers rapid weight gain -- may be unnecessary for almost all patients, according to researchers. Find out more about this major announcement.

400 PAGES OF DIET SOLUTIONS FOR THYROID PATIENTS! -- "THYROID DIET" BOOK COMING IN SEPTEMBER!

While I'm going to discontinue sale of the 40-page Thyroid Diet Guide as of June 15, 2004, you can already pre-order copies of my new 400-page book, The Thyroid Diet: Manage Your Metabolism for Lasting Weight Loss. The book, coming out in September of this year, is an in-depth and comprehensive guide that for the first time tackles the critical connection between weight gain and thyroid disease, offering a conventional and alternative plan for lasting weight loss. It's also a terrific resource for people who can't lose weight, and don't know whether they may have a thyroid problem.

The Thyroid Diet will help many previously unsuccessful dieters get diagnosed and treated – and proper thyroid treatment may be all that's needed to successfully lose weight. Even after optimal treatment, however, weight problems plague many thyroid patients. For those patients, The Thyroid Diet identifies the many frustrating impediments to weight loss, and offers solutions--both conventional and alternative--to help. It covers optimal dietary changes, including how a thyroid sufferer should focus on a low-glycemic, lower-carbohydrate, high-fiber, lower-calorie diet, optimal timing of meals for maximum hormonal impact, thyroid-damaging foods to avoid, helpful herbs and supplements, and more. It contains several different eating plans, food lists, and a set of delicious and healthy gourmet recipes.

With handy worksheets to use in weight loss tracking, and a special resource section featuring websites, books, and support groups, here is vital help for the millions of thyroid patients dealing with weight problems.

Next month, I'll be sending out information on how you can get a free chapter of The Thyroid Diet. But right now, you can pre-order your copy now from Amazon.

NOTES FROM MARY:

I'm rolling along slow and steady with my diet, now down 25 pounds. I have a bit more to go, but will dedicate this summer to losing the last pounds and firming up what remains -- a project until itself, as many of us know after losing weight! But I expect to be leaner and right on target when the new book launches this fall!

In the meantime, remember that I'm only selling the 40-page Thyroid Diet Guide -- which is self-published and distributed by my publishing office in Florida -- until June 15, 2004. After that, it goes off the market, and you'll have to wait until September when the 400-page "Thyroid Diet" book goes on the market. So if you want to get started this summer, get your copy of the Diet Guide, and pre-order your "Thyroid Diet" book so you'll have it in hand as soon as it comes out in September. And wait until you see the recipes in Thyroid Diet. They were created by a chef in New York City, and they're easy, delicious, and incredibly healthy!! Worth waiting for!!

Live well!
