Hi, I'm Mary Shomon, and I'm a patient advocate and writer, with a mission to help my fellow patients get the information you need to fast-forward you through the research so you can take action to get well and live well.

I'm an autoimmune disease/thyroid patient myself, and so every day, I'm trying to find solutions to problems we face, such as weight gain, fatigue, and better communications with our practitioners.

Since 1997, I've been writing and managing several patient-oriented Web sites on thyroid disease, including www.thyroid-info.com and thyroid.about.com. I also founded, write, and publish several popular patient-focused email health newsletters, including "Sticking Out Our Necks: Thyroid Newsletter," and "A Weight Off My Mind," a newsletter for thyroid or autoimmune patients who want to lose weight or improve metabolism. I've written a number of books that help people get diagnosed and live with overlooked conditions. My books include Living Well With Hypothyroidism (a best-seller first published in 2000, and after 20 printings, reissued in a 2nd edition in 2005), the New York Times best-seller The Thyroid Diet, Living Well With Autoimmune Disease, (9 printings so far), Living Well With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia, and I co-authored What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You About Parkinson's Disease.

I'm a member of the American Academy on Physician and Patient, as well as the Endocrine Society, and live and work in the Washington, DC area, where I live with my husband and two children.
