It's January, and that means it's Thyroid Awareness Month. And this year, to help thyroid sufferers finally get the help they need, I've put together the "Check Your Neck: Change Your Life" campaign, along with a free downloadable ebook -- all designed to help educate and empower people around the world with thyroid conditions. Find out more about Check Your Neck: Change Your Life online at www.thyroidawarenessmonth.com.
For their Thyroid Awareness Month efforts this January, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) recruited model Kim Alexis, who was diagnosed with hypothyroidism several years ago. Alexis is featured in a new video public service announcement (PSA) produced by AACE that you can view online at Youtube. They've also put together some of their reference information, added an interview with Alexis, and formatted it in a magazine they call Power of Prevention. You can view the video, and download a free copy of the Thyroid Awareness Month edition of the magazine, in PDF format,
online at their site.
With winter cold settling in around the nation, do you find that your fingers and toes get painfully cold and numb, even with the slightest exposure to cold? Do you have autoimmune thyroid disease -- like Hashimoto's or Graves' disease? If so, you might have a condition known as Raynaud's Syndrome -- which is more common in thyroid patients. If you have this painful condition, learn all about
the signs, symptoms and treatments for Raynaud's.
First Oprah announced she had a thyroid problem. Then it made her gain weight. Then she was treating it with soy milk and rest, and self-expression. Then it made her gain more weight. Then she said she was cured. Then she said she wasn't cured -- but her levels were "normal" and that means she doesn't have the problem anymore. Are you as confused about her thyroid story as Oprah is? I've been covering this all along, and am sorting out all the details in a series of updates and reports on Oprah and her thyroid/weight saga.
U.S. News and World Report has an article, talking about the effect that supplements and their ingredients can have on your medical treatment. In this case, a thyroid cancer patient, on the low-iodine diet, kept having elevated iodine levels. Find out
what he was taking that was affecting his iodine levels -- and interfering with his cancer treatment.
If you're trying to lose weight, your thyroid may be sabotaging your best efforts. You may think you're not exercising enough, or you're eating too many carbs, or too much fat, or you need to eat an extremely low-calorie diet, but for thyroid patients, even with diet and exercise, we may still struggle to lose weight. Undiagnosed, untreated and improperly treated thyroid problems can cause weight gain, or make weight loss difficult or impossible. If you are having weight problems that don't respond to diet and exercise, this checklist of thyroid risks, signs and symptoms can help.
When winter rolls around, do you find yourself feeling aches or pain in your joints and muscles. With shorter days and colder temps, do you feel especially tired and moody? You may be missing a crucial vitamin which, when you add as a supplement, could cure these troublesome symptoms. Find out
which supplement may be able to resolve all these symptoms, and how it could transform your health.
I was the featured guest on January 13th at 11 p.m. for the full hour of Dr. Ron Hoffman's radio show on WOR NewsTalk Radio 710 AM. Dr. Hoffman and I talked about Oprah's thyroid situation, along with controversies in diagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism.
At my recent all-day workshop on Living Well With Thyroid Disease, at New York's Open Center, special guest speaker Dr. Viana Muller, an anthropologist and expert in South American medicinal herbs, spoke about the thyroid benefits of Royal Maca, the specialized organic form of maca that Dr. Muller has introduced to American health practitioners and patients. Since the late 1980s, Dr. Muller has been making rain forest herb collecting and study trips to the Amazon River Basin and the high Andes of Peru. Dr. Muller has been actively involved in research, growing, harvesting, propagation and distribution of a specialized organic and wildcrafted form of maca known as Royal Maca. Maca has a long tradition of use as a native remedy to balance hormones, reverse infertility, improve sex drive, and minimize menopausal symptoms. Now, the natural health community is discovering the benefits of this popular traditional food. Maca also reportedly has a number of wonderful benefits for some thyroid patients -- including improved energy and more balanced endocrine hormones. In my case, I've used it in the past to help regulate erratic periods, and in the last few months, Royal Maca also completely eliminated perimenopausal hot flashes within a few days! Learn more about Royal Maca in an Interview with Viana Muller, and a Q&A on Maca. And visit the Whole World Botanicals website for more information on Royal Maca and other ground-breaking herbs and supplements.
We all know that there are plenty of reasons to stop smoking, especially during pregnancy. But research has now found that smoking during pregnancy can affect the thyroid function of the mother -- and the baby's lifelong thyroid health. Find out more about this important news, and
what it means for pregnant women and their children.
These days, going to the doctor can feel like a fast-food drive-through, or speed dating -- rather than actual caregiving. You get you several minutes with your doctor or practitioner -- who usually does most of the talking. You're lucky if you get any of your questions asked, much less answered, before you're ushered out, prescription in hand. But there are five ways that you can get the information you need and the outcome you want during a doctor's appointment.
My favorite online herb and vitamin retailer, Iherb.com, has a special opportunity for new customers -- a $5 off coupon. You can use it for any product Iherb sells (including my books!) but if you're interested in cutting your fluoride exposure, you might want to check out their line of Now Foods XyliWhite toothpastes. XyliWhite comes in RefreshMint, and Cinnamon flavors, and they are free of fluoride, and contain xylitol, which helps support healthy teeth and gums, and fights harmful plaque build-up.

What are the normal ranges for TSH tests? How should Free T4 and Free T3 tests be interpreted. What about Reverse T3? What are all the types of thyroid antibodies tests and what do they mean? What do fasting blood glucose test results tell us? Where can you get these tests at reduced costs? Can you order these tests without a doctor's prescription or your insurance company's approval? All the answers are in the March/April Issue of "Sticking Out Our Necks" print thyroid newsletter, where I've put together a handy set of charts that you can clip and save. The charts feature various blood tests of interest to thyroid patients, and what they mean, and how to interpret them. The handy charts include:
During my full-day seminar on Living Well With Thyroid Disease in New York last week, one of my special guests was Irma Jennings, a Certified Holistic Nutritional Counselor. Irma spoke about whole foods, and the importance of mindful eating, and in particular, the role of mindful, good nutrition for people with chronic illness.
Dear Readers,
Your thyroid is your master gland of metabolism. So when it develops problems, you may find that you experience fatigue, weight changes, depression, hair loss, and a host of hormonal symptoms.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of Americans with a thyroid condition don't even know it -- and their doctors don't suspect either. And those who are diagnosed often don't get proper treatment -- which sabotages weight loss efforts.
In this helpful ebook, I've shared information to help you learn about thyroid disease, find out if you have a thyroid condition, and take steps to help you get back on track.
This FREE e-book also features a detailed "Risks and Symptoms Checklist" you can take to your doctor to help you get diagnosed and treated.
Download it now, free (it's in easy-to-read PDF format) and you're on your way to a healthier you!
Live well,
Mary
