MARY'S WEIGHT LOSS UPDATE: GOING WELL!
As you all know, like many people with hypothyroidism, I struggle to get off and keep off extra weight. My ongoing efforts to continue to lose weight have been going particularly well lately, and I credit two things -- one, I've started doing more weight-bearing exercise, and I'll tell you more about that down the road. But the other thing that is helping are some new supplements that I've started. They don't have any of the horrible side effects I've had in the past. (For example, I can't take ephedra or stimulants, because it makes my mitral valve prolapse act up so my heart ends up doing the conga for days!) Find out what I'm taking that's really having an impact!

ENDOS ISSUE GUIDELINES FOR USE OF DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS
The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) has announced the release of its medical guidelines for the clinical use of dietary supplements and nutraceuticals. As you can imagine, the endos are taking a pretty conservative approach to what sorts of supplements they think you might want to take, or what could be a help. (After all, supplements don't involve visits to THEM, or prescriptions!) But it's worth a read to see what the endos think...

WHY ARE SO MANY THYROID DRUGS SUDDENLY "UNAVAILABLE?" -- SOMETHING FISHY, PERHAPS?
Something fishy is going on in the thyroid drug world, as lately, pharmacists all around the country are declaring definitively to their clients that the following drugs are "no longer available" or "not being made anymore" or are "going out of business:"
  • Unithroid
  • Levoxyl
  • Cytomel
  • Armour Thyroid
I've talked with the manufacturers of ALL of these products, and guess what? NOT TRUE!! Not a word of it!! Find out more details now.

THE T3 VS T4/T3 CONTROVERSY: COMBINATION HORMONE THERAPY DOES NOT BENEFIT HYPOTHYROID PATIENTS, SAYS NEW STUDY
Combining two hormone therapies to treat the psychological affects of hypothyroidism may not be more effective than using a single therapy, according to new research articles published this month in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM). Two new studies and an editorial question whether a combination of thyroxine (T4) and T3 is superior to T4 alone for the treatment of patients with hypothyroidism. A summary of the research findings is located online.

So, what do the top thyroid minds in the U.S. think about the JCEM research? I've had input from some of the nation's leading thyroid practitioners, including:

Kenneth Woliner, MD
Ted Friedman, MD
Jacob Teitelbaum, MD
Glenn Rothfeld, MD
Joseph Mercola, DO
Ken Blanchard, MD
Richard Shames, MD, Karilee Shames, RN, PhD
Roby Mitchell, MD
Dr. Barry Durrant-Peatfield
David Brownstein, MD

BE CAREFUL ABOUT THE VALIDITY OF INFORMATION FROM PUBLIC CITIZEN
Be careful what you read in Public Citizen's various health publications -- including their Worst Pills, Best Pills newsletter, their Questionable Doctors report, and other publications of the once-trustworthy champion of consumer health advocacy. Why? Because at least when it comes to thyroid disease, Public Citizen is utterly misinformed, relying on old, outdated information, or sometimes failing to research their opinions at all! Find out the truth now.

NOTES FROM MARY: TALKING TURKEY

Just in time for Thanksgiving, check out a holiday thyroid favorite: "Put Some Gravy On That: Thanksgiving Ruminations of a New Thyroid Patient." Humorist Jody LaFerriere was a newly diagnosed thyroid patient when she first wrote this wonderful piece. Even though it's been 3 years since her diagnosis, her thoughts -- and wonderful sense of humor -- are still just as funny, as she shares the things she's thankful for, which include her thyroid pills, TV, and. . . storage bins? Ok, you'll have to read the article to get THAT one explained! A thyroid holiday CLASSIC and you can read it now!

This year, I am thankful for enjoying better health than ever before, my slow and steady continued weight loss, and my wonderful family, friends and you, my readers!!!

Live well!

-- Mary
