My friends Katie Schwartz and Liz Schau -- the great minds behind
DearThyroid.com -- have graciously agreed to run a fun and empowering
DearThyroid contest! Share your best "thygraphs" -- one or two
paragraph stories that relate to perimenopause/menopause, and your
thyroid -- and you'll have a chance to win a number of free copies of The
Menopause Thyroid Solution, my new book just published in August.
Find out all the details about the contest -- and you may win a free copy
of The Menopause Thyroid Solution -- over at

Speaking of the ladies at DearThyroid, I was honored to be the first
guest on their new thyroid podcast, "Tales From Thyietnam." During the
one-hour podcast, which you can download to listen to on your favorite
MP3 player/Ipod or listen to online, Katie, Liz and I dished about, as they
put it, "the business of thyroids, and thyroid patients getting the
business from their thyroids and endocrinologists!" Katie and Liz have a
great way of connecting to thyroid patients, and terrific senses of
humor, and I loved the chance to spend the hour with them talking about
thyroid patient advocacy, and how we can feel and live well. Listen now.
Have you gotten your copy of my new book, The Menopause
Thyroid Solution yet? If you're over 40, this book has essential

What's going on with natural thyroid? It's a question we've been asking
since the spring, and it came to a head this summer. Here's a recap.
The Save Natural Thyroid Coalition now has more than 4500 members,
and we've formed a Steering and Strategy Committee, including some
of the leading physicians, advocates, lobbyists and attorneys from
around the nation and the world, who have an interest in protecting
patient and practitioner rights to natural desiccated thyroid drugs. I
would invite you to check into the Save Natural Thyroid Coalition's web
page, which is continually under development, at

Researcher Dr. John Lowe, editor of the journal "Thyroid Science," has
made it his mission to get to the truth of issues surrounding thyroid
diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Lowe's latest analysis focuses on the
science behind natural desiccated thyroid (NDT) drugs, and the
criticisms of natural thyroid made by a controversial and frequently
volatile California endocrinologist, Richard B. Guttler, who for decades
has been an extremely vocal and volatile opponent of natural thyroid
drugs, synthetic T3 medications, and patient rights to choices in thyroid
hormone replacement medication. According to Dr. Lowe, his paper
provides more evidence that [Dr. Guttler's] allegation against NDT is
false. I believe it is crucial to the health and well-being of many
hypothyroid patients that Guttler open-mindedly acknowledge the falsity
of his claim..." Find out more about Dr. Lowe's analysis.
The Thyroid Cancer Survivors Association (ThyCa) is holding its 12th
international Thyroid Cancer Survivors' Conference. This year, they are
returning to Boston -- where the conference was first held in 1998 and
1999. The event is scheduled for October 16-18, 2009, and will be held at
the Sheraton Ferncroft Hotel near Boston, Massachusetts, at 50
Ferncroft Road, Danvers, Massachusetts. The event is slated to include
more than 100 informational sessions focused on various aspects of
living with thyroid cancer. Find out more about the sessions, and how
you can still sign up to attend this annual event.
If you're a thyroid patient who has successfully lost weight, what was
your secret? Did you follow a low-fat, low-carb, low-glycemic, or low-
calorie diet? (Or all of the above?) Did you exercise, and if so, what sort
of exercise did the trick, and how much? Did you follow a plan, like
Atkins, South Beach, Fat Flush, the Thyroid Diet, Nutrisystem, Jenny
Craig, or Weight Watchers? Or did you come up with your own
personalized approach? Share your diet secrets, tips and tricks, and find
out what worked for other thyroid patients.
FACES OF LOW DOSE NALTREXONE
Patient advocate and "Honest Medicine" health blogger/writer Julia
Schopick has just published a new book, The Faces of Low Dose
Naltrexone. The 116-page book is available as an ebook for free
download. The Faces of LDN was created in honor of International Low
Dose Naltrexone (LDN) Awareness Week (ILDNAW) (October 19-25), and
offers information on the LDN story. LDN, a drug approved in the 1980s
for treatment of drug and alcohol addiction -- is being used successfully
at very low dose levels to treat a variety of immune-related illnesses,
including autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid
arthritis, Crohn's disease, lupus, and autoimmune thyroid diseases, and
new studies are learning more about uses for this medication. Julia
Schopick is making the book available to anyone who would like to
download it for free. You can read more about it at her blog, or
download the book now in PDF format.
