Tips On Choosing a Doctor

Being listed here on the Thyroid Top Doctors List doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Make sure you call ahead to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before you make an appointment. For more information, read the chapter on "How to Choose a Doctor" in the bestselling book, Living Well With Hypothyroidism.

A Top Doc for thyroid patients -- whether hypothyroid, hyperthyroid, or facing other thyroid problems -- is a doc who listens, cares, has an open mind, wants us to understand and participate in our treatment decisions, and isn't beholden to a particular drug company. They are doctors who have been freely nominated by patients, or who want to make their innovative ideas available to patients -- NOT doctors who have been paid off by pharmaceutical companies, or who pay to be listed in directories.

But above all...a Top Doc is one who signs on to our motto: We're Patients...NOT Lab Values!" Here's a compilation of patients' own recommendations, as well as some innovative doctors who have written in, assembled by Mary Shomon.

Almost everyone with a thyroid problem ends up hypothyroid. If you have Hashimoto's disease, you almost always are hypothyroid. If you have thyroid cancer or nodules, and have your thyroid removed all or in part, you almost always become hypothyroid. And if you have radioactive iodine (RAI) for Graves' disease/hyperthyroidism, you almost always end up hypothyroid. In Living Well With Hypothyroidism: What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You...That You Need to Know, by Mary Shomon, you'll find the in-the-trenches, practical patient-oriented advice you need on how to find the right doctor to diagnose and treat various
forms of hypothyroidism, the drugs for hypothyroidism you and your doctor may not know about, how to overcome infertility and have a successful pregnancy and breastfeed with hypothyroidism (it's not always as easy as doctors suggest!), alternative therapies for hypothyroidism and the symptoms and side effects that still might plague you, combatting weight gain and successful weight loss, depression, and much more. Special chapters focus on hypothyroidism in thyroid cancer, and hypothyroidism in infants and children. Living Well With Hypothyroidism is available at local bookstores, online bookstores (
order from Amazon.com now!), and you can also order by phone with a credit card (Call Politics and Prose bookstore in Washington, DC toll-free at 800-722-0790.) Click here for more information on this bestselling book, named a top 40 health bestseller by Amazon.com two years in a row!
