Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?
Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.
* The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
* The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
* The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
* Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.
* Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.

uses herbs, acupuncture and nutrition as well as medications including Armour. She is willing to
do whatever labwork is necessary. Her manner is warm and personable, and she is a good listener.

a long time with you doing a thorough intake." (Added: June 2004)
Anaheim
Bruce Chow, OD General Practice 9581 Ball Road Anaheim CA 92804
A reader
writes: "Dr. Chow is open to patient feedback, will call you personally
with lab results, very caring and understanding, not in a hurry with
patients. He will prescribe Armour and believes that just because a
drug is newer, it's not necessarily better--he depends on patient input
to decide if a medicine is appropriate or not." (Added 6/03) Apple Valley

Damiani: "I went to Dr. Damiani a few months ago after fighting with my HMO doctors for
four years. I had an enlarged thyroid and mass in my neck that made swallowing difficult amongst other
problems. Dr. Damiani immediately sent me to have an ultrasound and a CAT scan. To make a long
story short, three weeks ago I had a rather large mass and thyroid removed and am beginning to feel
better. Dr. Damiani continues to monitor me with blood work and medication. I am very happy to have
at least found a doctor who is concerned about his patients!" (Added 10/05)

Bakersfield
Dr. Ramchandra Ayyagari, Reproductive Endocrinology, 3535 San Dimas Street , Ste 20, Bakersfield, CA , 661/323-3266. A reader writes: "While being treated for fertility issues, my discussions with Dr. A included my thyroid condition. After a little bit of coaxing and promising to always be willing to get current labs, Dr. A agreed to prescribe Amour for me, when no one in Bakersfield, CA would. I am now on a dose that seems to work really well with my body, after years of Synthyroid, and am maintaining a health weight; without losing too much hair or having brittle nails. I am a bit of an anomaly as I was diagnosed with Graves disease at age nine, got it under control after four years of anti-thyroid medication, and then had a Throid Storm in my early thirties and was told by my doctors to take the radioactive iodine. Now I'm stuck without a thyroid and forever dependent on medication. Finally something a little more natural and doctor somewhat approved." (June 2006).

A reader writes: "A husband and wife Ob/Gyn team, with a P.A. They've been in business since 2005, and so far everyone who's seen them is pleased. They routinely do all the right tests for thyroid function, prescribe Armor or Naturethroid, and are willing to prescribe hormone on a trial basis if labs are normal. I'm not aware of anyone else in Bakersfield this advanced, and I've been looking for years." (May 2008)
Berkeley
Dr. Stephen Langer, General Preventive Medicine & Clinical Nutrition,
3031 Telegraph Ave. 548-7384 A reader writes: "After working with what
was supposed to be one of the best endo's in the area and knowing that
Synthroid didn't work for me, research on alternative medicine led me
to Dr. Langer. A year after being diagnosed with Hashimoto's / Hypothyroidism
I feel Dr. Langer has helped me get my life back. He believes in and
prescribes Armour. He also has run other tests such as allergy and yeast
to be sure that there are not other reasons for my fatigue. He won't
stop until you feel good."
Another recommendation: "I got Dr. Langer's
name off of your website after I had pituitary surgery and
then symptoms of
dizziness, weight gain, and anxiety. All of those symptoms were keeping me
from living my full and
wonderful life. Two top endocrinologists told me 'nothing was wrong'. They
said my blood was fine.
Dr. Langer found food allergies, Hashimotos, Hyperthyroid and stayed with me
every week for the past
six months until I was myself again. Never have I met a doctor like this. His
reputation in Berkeley
with kids is also stellar. Thank you so much for the listing here and yes, it is
true what the previous
writer said; Dr. Langer will stay with you until you feel good, or great. He is the
tops. Thanks for
having this informative place. Without it, I would have been on all sorts of
drugs. Thank you." (Added Dec. 04)
Another fan of Dr. Langer: "I got
Dr. Langer’s name and number off your website. After 15 years of feeling tired and my HMO doctor
not listening to me, I saw Dr. Langer. In 2 weeks I was feeling great. It’s been 2 and a half months
and I’m a new person. He started me on Armour Thyroid and supplements and I’m losing weight,
motivated, and feeling so energized. I can’t thank him enough." (Added 10/05)
Another reader writes:
"For 4 years I lived half-a-life. I had so many symptoms -- recurrent mild yeast infection, temperature intolerance, fuzzy headedness, hair loss, constipation... I went from doctor to doctor ... covered specialists in endocrinology, internal medicine, hair loss specialists .... they all said things were normal .... but i didn't FEEL normal... It was frustrating feeling half-alive... and having everyone imply that my symptoms were imagined or just natural part of getting older (i was 26 when this started!!) I found out about Dr.langer on a website. He changed my life. Within a month of seeing Dr.Langer i saw an improvement in my symptoms and after 6 months and adjusted armour dosage i was bask to feeling NORMAL again with ALL my symptoms resolved and the hair loss decreased. To say Dr.Langer is wonderful would be an understatement -- that how much of a difference he made in my life." (August 2007)
Another reader writes:
"I found Dr. Langer on your website after not getting any help for my extreme fatigue. After just two sessions - one for my health history and another after a lab tests, Dr. Langer put me on the tiniest pill I've ever seen, Armor thyroid, and it has literally changed my life! I feel quite normal now and am so thankful for your help in directing me to Dr. Langer. In fact, Dr, Langer was so thorough with me, in our very first conversation he realized he could also help my son's digestion problems. He ordered lab tests for my son, and literally had his problem figured out by the very first visit! We were astounded to find out that he was very allergic to some common foods and avoiding them has helped him tremendously. Thank you very much for providing a service that sends us to such fine doctors!" (May 2008)

Boris Catz, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.R.S.M., Endocrinology, 435 N. Roxbury
Dr. #102, Beverly Hills, CA 90210 (310) 273-1766. "I was told I had
chronic fatigue and was a closet eater. I was told about Dr. Catz and
found out I did not have chronic fatigue but hypothyroid. I had a goiter
and tumors. Who knows what would have happened and I was referred to
Dr. Catz." (added 1/04)
Another reader writes: "I meet people all over
the place who
have had difficulty in diagnosing thyroid problems. When they talk about
who finally diagnosed and successfully treated them, Dr. Catz has been
their savior!" (Added 4/04)
Another reader writes:
"I've been trying to find out for over a year why I'm exhausted when
I wake up and was on depression medication. I thought it was just part of getting older. A friend at work
went to Dr. Catz, after getting normal thyroid test results, and found out through ultrasound that she has
an enlarged thyroid that was cutting off her air, so they thought she had sinus problems. In 2 weeks on
medication, her neck was 2 1/2 inches smaller. I found out that even though I had negative thyroid tests,
I had 6 goiters on my thyroid. I am on medication and am excited to get my life back! " (Added: Dec.
04)
Another reader writes: "I had been very ill for over a year, after the
birth of my first child. After seeing numerous doctors here in Bakersfield, I heard about Dr. Catz. He
found that I had a goiter, and an under active thyroid gland. He prescribed thyroid hormones, and I've
been well. I've been treated now by Dr. Catz for over twenty years, and I am so grateful to him. Before
I found him I thought my life was over. I actually wanted it to be because I was so ill." (Added
6/05)
Another fan:
A reader writes: "I found Dr. Boris Catz, here in Beverly Hills. He has reduced his
hours a bit, so getting in to see him could take awhile, however he
seems to be worth the wait. Rather than seeing him and then ordering
tests, he prefers to send you for blood work and a Thyroid ultrasound
previous to your appointment. This way he can examine you and have
the results right there to consult. It is quite nice to have
everything there and have him interpret the results. He was well
informed, friendly, and very good about giving information out right
away on thyroid disease. I have only just started to see him, but I
feel confident in his abilities, and in his obviously vast
experience." (October 2006)
Another fan of Dr. Catz:
I've been treated for hypothyroidism for nearly 14 years. For the last 2 years I've had many symptoms, but the test always come back "normal" Dr Catz found that I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, which caused gall bladder problem that was misdiagnosed as I.B.S. and Acid Reflux. He discovered antibodies and the need for both thyroid hormones (Synthroid and Cytomel [T4 and T3]) and DuoZyme . He also found that my daughter has Hashimoto's, and enlarged thyroid, and a nodule. She needs only T3 at this point. We both are taking more folic acid, as well. Dr. Catz helped us by doing more complete testing instead of just the "routine". He is the only one who will - I've been to several, I know what I'm talking about." (October 2006)
Another fan:
"After years of being ignored by my GP and tired of feeling exhausted, cold, and unable to lose weight even though I was dieting and exercising like crazy, I decided to take matters into my own hands and found Dr. Catz in your web page. My blood work was fine but after taking the time to recollect my family history, and looking at my thyroid ultrasound Dr. Catz found out I do have a Thyroid problem. I have no words to explain how great it felt to finally have somebody really listening and doing something about it." (October 2006).
Another Catz fan:
"Dr. Catz saved me. At the age of 19, I was misdiagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian syndrome and told I would never have children. A friend recommended me to Catz and he told me the previous diagnosis was wrong and that all I had hypothyroid. I have been on the medicine for 3 months and taken a new set of fertility tests and my OB/GYN said that I need to start birth control if I don't want to get pregnant because I am " fertile Myrtle." Thank you Dr. Catz." (Added Dec. 2006)
Another reader writes:
"I was overweight, tired, depressed, and after having 3 miscarriages VERY upset and fed up with doctors who couldn't help me. Then God (through a close family friend) sent me to Dr. Catz! I now have energy, lost weight, happy, and have a beautiful daughter! Dr. Catz took the time to listen to me and answer ALL of my questions. He helped me get my life back and it was better than it has ever been! Dr. Catz is an expert in thyroidism and I for one am grateful for all he has done for me!!" (Added Dec. 2006)

A reader writes: "I had been seeing an internist who prescribed bio-identical hormones to me for hypothyroid and after almost 2 years of not being on a regulated dosage I decided to get a second opinion. Dr. Eva ran extensive tests and diagnosed me with Hashimoto's Disease. So we are in the process of changing my medication and I have more energy than I did three months ago. I like Dr. Eva's energy when she comes in the room. She really knows her stuff compared with my previous Doc. She is straightforward but in a caring way and willing to work with integrative medicine as well as traditional. I went to her because I heard she would prescribe armor. I feel like I am in good hands and will soon be on a good healthy track in treating my thyroid." (Added October 2007)

treated I questioned DR Wang as
to tests in normal range despite all symptoms of hypo. I was shocked
with his admitting to me quite often
tests are normal & a very broad range of normal. He has medical
records on me for 14 years & has seen
dramatic changes. With my finally questioning him over such he put me
on Armour realizing I had not
been treated for this problem & needed to be. My GP who is listed
here as a top thyroid DR ignored my
complaints stating tests were normal. Period. No discussion. I was quite
thrilled to finally have this
problem addressed properly with feeling results. I wish I had of realized

Dr. Paula Luber, General practice/internist/primary care, 317 N. El Camino Real #104, Encinitas, California, 92024, 760-944-3408.
A reader writes: "I would like to add my recommendation of Dr. Paula Luber to your site. I have Hashimoto's and endured years of not feeling well while being treated "by the book". Finally, I decided to seek counsel outside the group of doctors I was seeing. At Dr. Luber's recommendation, I began taking Armour Thyroid in place of a synthetic and began to notice a difference almost at once. Adjusting the dosage to what worked took a little time but she was always helpful and willing to listen to how I was feeling, not just what my "numbers" were. Dr. Luber seemed genuinely excited at the improvements I was seeing. Probably my most exciting moment was going to the HMO for a different issue and finding out I had a 65 pulse. My resting pulse had been in the high 80's to low 90's for years! With the new treatment, I've lost that "low-lying anxiety" feeling that I had even on my best days. My T3 and T4 are nicely balanced now, instead of my T4 being high and my T3 being low. I only wish I had been able to find a doctor to "think outside the box" with me years ago. If you are in the greater San Diego area, I highly recommended Dr. Luber. She is a family physician and thyroid patient herself who has walked in our shoes. She uses Armour Thyroid, deals with adrenal issues, and uses a functional medicine approach to wellness with her patients."
(August 2007)
Another reader writes:
"Dr. Luber was my rescuing angel after many, many misdiagnoses and unsuccessful treatments. I had consults with family practitioners who did not know how to treat hypothyroidism and a wildly (and high) fluctuating TSH, psychiatrists who asserted my problem was all in my head (even when presented with medical journal literature on the emotions and the endocrine system!), and endocrinologists who simply looked at by lab values and said I was fine, refusing to treat me. (At one point, I was almost too weak to stand.) With Dr. Luber's personal approach--looking at the patient and *not* simply the numbers--my hypothyroidism is under control and I am now fully functional--I am feeling like myself again. (Dr. Luber prescribes Armor Thyroid, which is a T4/T3 therapy. Most doctors use only T4 supplementation.)" (May 2008)

A reader writes: "Dr Olafson helped me with a recent thyroid issue. After visiting a couple other doctors who were not very helpful, I saw Dr Olafson who determined that I was hyperthyroid.
She spent more time with me then any other doctor I've seen and actually listened to my concerns.
Her approach was extremely comprehensive and included both medications and supplements such as magnesium, CoQ10, and Acetyl-L-Carnitne. Soon thereafter, my symptoms improved and I am feeling much better. I would highly recommend Dr Olafson for thyroid or any other related issues." (Added October 2007)

You will see on his website that his philosophy is fully integrated and his considers the most valuable opinion is the patients. I have known him personally for a very long time, and have seen him as my own physician through cancer, bone marrow transplant and now hypothyroidism. His willingness to literally sacrifice his own personal time and finances to help his patients is unparalleled. He has been given some of the usual misinformation about Synthroid but still allowed me to choose the natural medication of my choice. I know he has done this for other patients as well, because others had come to him with similar complaints about the doctor not letting them choose their own prescription. Then I went to see Dr.Shah, he was the first doctor who told me normal thyroid levels doesn't mean its OPTIMUM. He treated me with Armor and within no time I was back to normal. I started my search for an Alternative Medicine doctor after being told by my new Endocrinologist that I should take cholesterol medicine for a total cholesterol of 205. I was feeling fatigued, brain fog, no energy, all the usual symptoms of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Dr. Kahn had me tested for food sensitivities and allergies and for adrenal function. Discovered I had many food sensitivities and had very low adrenal function. After changing my diet to eliminate the problem foods and starting a supplement program for the adrenal function, I am feeling so much better! No insurance in California for NDs, but their office does blood work on the premises and will bill your PPO or medicare. And the cost of an office visit is 1/2 what a conventional MD would charge. "I have seen three doctors for my hashimoto's disease. I was fed up after my last doctor kept telling me I am stressed and I need to see a therapist and take prozac. I asked her to run more tests but she looked at my previous blood test and said you seem fine. So I googled to see if I can find the best thyroid drs in Southern California. Stumbled on this website and found Dr. Kahn. A little hesitant because I had to pay out of pocket. I answered a full questionnaire. She went through it and asked me questions. She ordered to test my B12, iodine, food allergies and adrenals. All tests came back and she gave me B12, iodine and adrenal support. I have to cut out quite a bit for food allergies but in less than a week I have lost 7 lbs and tons of energy. My hashimoto's symptoms - allergies, puffy eyes, tired all the time and digestion problems have disappeared or subsided. Dr. Kahn explained each test and what each deficiency affects my body. available at the next appointment. All of my questions were answered in a simple way that showed me
that the doctor does not feel threatened by a patient asking questions. He also ordered the most detailed

She found high testosterone levels and is currently working on this
problem, then she will start on the next symptom so that hopefully I
can feel like I used to (normal). She stays on top of all the new research

Writes one reader, "Besides being my cousin, he was there for me when I was first diagnosed
with Hashimoto’s. I am on Lithium, but no one ever bothered to look
at my thyroid gland although I was having symptoms before being put
on lithium. My cousin said to me that lithium can BRING out thyroid
disease that is already there. It apparently runs in our family. Most
of my cousins, his sisters, have it. His wife tells me he is most helpful
to women going through difficult post partum times. He is a devoted
endocrinologist."
Another reader recommends Dr. Fernandez: "Until
I found Dr. Fernandez, I was so tired I couldn't get off the
couch. My hair was falling out in chunks, my sudden weight gain couldn't
be explained and my cholesterol fell into the high risk category. A
previous doctor was hesitant to run the correct tests which finally
confirmed a diagnosis of Hashimoto's. I was prescribed Synthroid, but
my symptoms weren't improving and in some cases were getting worse.
This is when a friend recommended Dr. Fernandez. He suggested we try
Armour Thyroid instead and took the time and ran the tests necessary
to get to the root of my problem. His compassion and knowledge changed
my life. Every symptom has improved dramatically for me, including a
normal cholesterol range, finally. If you feel like you aren't getting
the answers you need or the understanding you deserve, I can't recommend
Dr. Fernandez highly enough." (Added 2/03)
More praise from a reader for Dr.
Fernandez:
"Previous doc said that my 3.3 levels were "just fine" and
my weight gain, fatigue, etc was just because I turned 30. Went to Dr.
Fernandez who spent over an hour with me, answering my questions and
really made me feel comfortable. I can't thank him enough!!" (1/04)

which my former doctor wouldn't even test for, despite nonexistent weight loss (7x/week workouts and

A reader writes:
"I met Dr. Chaudhary after being diagnosed with a large nodule on my thyroid gland. He

Professor of Ophthalmology (Dr. Robert Goldberg) and Dr. McCann invented
a new procedure for decompression surgery that is less invasive. Their
patients come from all over the world. I could not have asked for a

Dr. Mestman is Director of the Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases,

he is such a champion of women and has an excellent reputation among
other doctors. He uses natural supplements in conjunction with any medication

I had been trying for 17 years to get my doctors to figure out why I had severe and constant muscle pain and severe fatigue. This was so bad that the only reason I was not disabled and on pain meds is because I am extremely stubborn. I lived my life anyway. My doctors had no idea why I felt like this. My thyroid tests were in the low end of"normal". I was referred to Dr. Mathur, who initially diagnosed me with clinical hypothyroidism due to my many symptoms; later I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis/Syndrome. She put me on Armour Thyroid as well as other hormones (I was entering menopause). Within 2 weeks of taking the Armour my pain began to disappear. The only time it has ever come back even a small amount is when the thyroid levels got too low (the levels fluctuate, making management a little bit tricky). She does not take insurance and she's relatively expensive, but getting rid of that constant pain was worth more than I paid." (March 2009)

writes: "I have never had a doctor listen the way Dr. Gorman does! She
lets you tell her ALL of your symptoms, then asks a few questions, lets
you actually answer them, and then figures out a treatment. I've never
been treated like a "dummy" for asking questions. She is enthusiastic
about her patients doing their own research on health subjects. Her

"Dr. Grellet is a caring, gentle and knowledgeable doctor who listened
to my symptoms and checked for herself to diagnose me as hypothyroid
- even when two Reproductive Endocrinologists and several TSH tests
said I didn't have a thyroid problem. She herself has thyroid problems
and knows first-hand how misdiagnoses can be so common and harmful for
the patients."
Another reader writes: "I would like to second the recommendation for Dr. Grellet -
she is
a very caring doctor who takes your symptoms seriously. She is currently
treating me for hypothyroid, and I am very impressed with her."
Another reader recommends Dr. Grellet: "I have been being treated for
Hypothyroidism for over 10 years, but
when I experienced trouble with repeated miscarriages and my former
Endocrinologist would not even talk to me about a thyroid connection
to infertility. I started seeing Dr. Grellet she spent an hour with
me on our first meeting just getting to know me and my situation, and
finding out where I wanted to go from here. We set up an appointment
for the following week, and she did the most complete physical I have
ever had. She was the first Dr. to check for anti thyroid antibodies,
and do a complete thyroid screen (all my other Dr. did for the past
2 years was a T4). Needless to say my antibodies that should have been
below 2 were above 70. She actually LISTENS to her patients, and does
not mind at all if I ask questions, or have articles I would like her
to look over. She has been very open to my suggestions and concerns
about my medication. She is the first Dr. that has actually involved
me in my own treatment. I highly recommend her." (Added 2/03)
More praise for Dr. Grellet from a reader: "I had been on Synthroid for 20 years and
was always tired. Questions
to my previous doctor were met with "you're on the right meds." I literally
shook Dr. Grellet's hand and she started in on the questions about my
Hashimoto's. Turns out that she noticed my hand was as cold as ice when
she shook it and that's all she needed to consider Armour. Now I have
energy and warm hands/feet. I love everyone in Dr. Grellet's office
and will be a life-long patient." (added 1/04)
Another fan of Dr. Grellet: "OK, a bit repetitive, but it is not possible to sing too
many praises for the amazing Dr. Grellet! She is exactly what all doctors should strive to become-a
caring, dynamic, brilliant person. After two doctors told me I needed counseling for my depression,
exhaustion, and freezing hands and feet, Dr. Grellet worked with me to get the exact right dosage of
thyroid medication. I feel like a completely different person. Thanks to her I got pregnant quickly, and
I have the energy necessary to keep up with my daughter. I owe her such a great debt!" (Added

A reader writes: "Dr. Grellet is wonderful. She is caring and really
listens. She treated my 14 year old

She has thyroid disease.I had seen a GP 4 months prior to finding Dr. Grellet's name listed on the Top Docs webpage. I was not diagnosed by my GP but less than twenty-four hours after my lab test was done at the About Women's Health Medical Group, Lopa called to tell me I tested positive for the thyroid anti-bodies and yes, I do have Hashimoto's thyroid disease. When in her office, I never feel like anything I feel or say is unimportant. She listens and then gives you options for treatment. She doesn't just hand you a prescription, she offers recommendations for treatment and lets you decide. She even writes everything down on a bright pink sheet of paper, so you won't forget or lose the paper! Everything they do in their office is about the patient. Najarian is a Harvard Med School Graduate with a BS & MS in Mechanical
Engineering from MIT. At first I found this odd until I quizzed him
on his educational background. Then I realized that his engineering
roots taught him both analysis and problem solving which have enabled
him to dive into the understanding how the human brain and thyroid dance
and dysfunction together. I am a 46 year old female who has had joint
pains for 20-years. Early menopause hit me at 40. At which point I went
to four different gynecologists who turned me away because I was too
young. I then turned to a local well-known endocrinologist in Goleta
Dr. D. S., who was compassionate and recognized the hormone problem,
anemia, and B12 deficiency right away. She also noted that my thyroid
gland seemed enlarged; yet felt it was fat around the gland. Dr. D.
S. stated that it appeared that my body was not repairing due to fact
that I had tendonitis and carpal tunnel in both hands and arms, yet
did not have an answer for this problem. I was diagnosed with low thyroid
(YES even though my numbers are well into the normal range and he requested
I purchase the book THYROID POWER) and he immediately put me on ARMOUR
thyroid. On the 4th-day I woke up a new person approximately 3-minutes
prior to the alarm rather than hitting the snooze for 10-12 slaps. Additionally
the pain in my joints went down about 25%. By the 7th-day, the first
day on a full dose, I had amorous thoughts about my husband and it had
been years since I had an actual sex drive. Additionally the pain in
my body was down by about 50% and I was now sleeping like a rock. For
23-years I have blamed my husbands snoring for my not sleeping; now
I cannot tell you if he snores. By the 14th-day my entire body was pain
free. I do not appear to have any signs of the tendonitis or carpal
tunnel, my hips and back do not hurt, I was told I had Fibromyalgia
and Ankylosing Spondylitis, Osteoporosis in my neck and I now have NO
PAIN WHAT SO EVER ANYWHERE. So in the last two weeks I have made appointments
with bad I feel better than I have felt in 20-years, and I am not taking
any anti-inflammatory drugs or steroids for the first time that I can
remember." (added 1/04)

He now has offices in Marysville and Sacramento (near the airport and Arco Arena), and specializes in HRT, thyroid and weight loss. I consider him a terrific diagnostician -- and have recommended him to friends, with good results. After listening to my various symptoms, he told me that he thought we were dealing with menopause, hypothyroid and fibromyalgia, and that he thought my symptoms were interrelated. (At the time, I was on Synthroid, and TSH tests looked like things were fine, although I felt horrible, achy, foggy, depressed and exhausted.) He tested (including T3, Free; Thyroxine, Free, Direct; T3, Reverse; and TPO) and found that I was hypometabolic, had very low ferritin levels, and deficiencies of Vitamins B and D. He's prescribed T3 and a bioidentical hormone combination through a local compounding pharmacy and some vitamin supplements, in addition to the Synthroid I'd previously been on. Symptoms I've been suffering through for over 15 years are now largely gone, and my quality of life is enormously improved. I highly recommend Dr. Warner!" (Added October 2007)

daughter-in-law found this doctor on this web-site in Palm Springs.
That was February 15, 2002. From August 25, 2001 until 8 days ago, I've
suffered from hypothyroidism and the treatment with 2 mgs of Synthroid
- prescribed (with little attention to a complete physical, etc.,) by
doctors in Laughlin, NV. Nothing was working! I was extremely fatigued;
my hair kept thinning - I had rapid pulse; couldn't sleep - and felt
I'd be dead by the end of the year if something didn't change. When
I arrived at my son's house on February 14 in Palm Desert, I was sick
- collapsed, and thanks to Sandy being so determined to find a doctor
on the inter-net, I'm feeling like a brand new person today. She found
the doctor and he took me in on March 4, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. Unfortunately
I was very ill with a severe bronchial infection, but he handled the
illness; prescribed medicine for my anxiety, and told me I'd been overdosed
all these months by way too high of a dosage of Synthroid. He made me
wait 10 days without taking any type of thyroid replacement - so I could
eliminate the Synthroid and also recover from the illness. Then on March
11 he started me natural thyroid replacement program. Today is March
15 and I've just finished walking 1.5 miles at a brisk pace with little
fatigue. I've hung out one load of clothes; fixed breakfast (now that
I have an appetite again), and have had a sound night's sleep since
he gave me the proper medication to assist me in this. I urge anyone
who's suffering like I have to call this doctor and if he's not available
to add you as his patient, please read what I'm taking (the 2 grains
of Armour Thyroid) and go straight to an accredited doctor with a print-out
of not only this testimonial, but the one on page 5 of 10 pages on this
site - written by another individual who said, "He put me on 2 grains
of Armour Thyroid and in just a month my life has been given back to
me." It was her testimonial that caused me to pick him on the 15th of
February. So I felt it necessary to add mine so we can continue to help
others who've been so ill."

"For 5 years I struggled with my health, even reaching the point whereI could hardly get out of bed.
I went from doctor to doctor, many of them highly recommended butnothing they did made a difference. They put me on Synthroid, Westhroid, and Armour Thyroid, and was even treated for Wilson's Syndrome and nothing worked. Then I went to Dr. Neil Rouzier and almost overnight my health turned around. Neil Rouzier works with compounding pharmacies and he prescribed a compounded thyroid medicine. What a difference! I finally,
after 5 years, am getting my lifeback. Almost all of my symptoms, except the excess weight, have
disappeared. I highly recommend him, especially to someone who has tried all the other thyroid medications
and found they don't work for them. Get your life back, visit Dr. Rouzier." (Added: June 2004)
Another fan:
"After my G.P. put me on Armor, (at my request) I became Hyper-Thyroid, but my TSH was within normal limits so he would not adjust the dosage. I asked him to refer me to an endocrinologist, which he did. The endocrinologist was awful! He is the type of doctor we all read about, and hope to never meet. He took me off of Armor and returned me to the lowest dosage of Synthroid I had ever been on. I was so exhausted that I could barely get out of bed. I read about Dr. Rouzier on this website and decided I needed to give him a try. Dr. Rouzier is wonderful. He listens to me when I tell him how I am feeling and will explain what he thinks is the cause and how best to treat it. He put me back on the same dosage of Armor as my G.P., but had me space out the dosage during the day. For the first time in years, I feel like a "normal" person." (Added Dec. 2006)

So far under her treatment, I have made great improvements with my thyroid condition and feel much better than I did when I first began treatment with her. She is first-rate and I highly recommend her." (August 2007)
Another reader:
"Dr. Drange is wonderful! I am hypothyroid but have had a hard time getting diagnosed and treated. And to make things worse, I have severe symptoms on all the synthetic thyroid medications (heart palpitations, severe anxiety, etc.). Dr. Drange took a great deal of time talking to me. When my lab results came in, she called me and gave detailed information about my TSH and thyroid antibody levels. I'm going to try Armor, and if that gives me symptoms Dr. Drange wants me to try compounded thyroid. I feel like I finally have an endocrinologist in my corner." (May 2008)
Another fan:
"I agree with all of the other comments listed -- Dr. Drange is wonderful. I had a high TSH but a"normal" free T4. I had gained 60 pounds in the last two years, I was fatigued and fuzzy headed, and my joints were sore. I also have a strong family history of thyroid problems. My primary care physician nevertheless refused to prescribe any thyroid replacement hormones because my free T4 was"within the normal range." (My PCP claimed that the T4 was the only thing she really needed to pay attention to.) I came into Dr. Drange's office ready to lay out all of my research and advocate for treatment. I didn't need to! Dr. Drange took one look at my lab numbers and listened carefully to my symptoms and concluded very quickly that I needed treatment. She was aware of the currently accepted range of lab values and the fact that many doctors and labs are unaware and continue to use outdated ranges. She was also very interested in the fact that my husband and I are trying to conceive. She indicated that my TSH should be no higher than a 2 during pregnancy. She confirmed that I will need to be monitored closely should I become pregnant and she was very proactive in developing a plan of action should my husband and I conceive. It was so wonderful to meet with a doctor who knows her stuff and didn't poo-poo my symptoms as stress or lack of exercise. I highly recommend Dr. Drange!" (March 2009)
A reader writes:
"I found Dr Drange on this site after some very disappointing experiences with other endocrinologists. I was borderline by the old standards but way high for current standards, especially when trying to conceive.
Dr Drange confirmed everything I had read about current reference ranges and conception. As soon as I get pregnant she will test me every 4 weeks. That makes me tremendously relieved, as the last doctor didn't even want to medicate me at a TSH level of 4.7 and with elevated antibodies.
Dr. Drange also took the time to explain Hashimoto's in depth." (March 2009)

Not one of them tested my T3 or T4 levels or even mentioned the possibility of Hashimoto's. When my fatigue became bad that I had to stop working, I was lucky enough to find Dr. Wilson. Not only is he a very kind doctor, he knows the broad range of symptoms that come from thyroid problems. He ordered a thyroid panel and we found that I indeed have Hashimoto's. He prescribes Armor first because he has seen it work so well. Dr. Wilson listens to your symptoms and examines your thyroid profile - how the T3, T4, and reverse T3 levels look in relationship with each other. Even though my levels are within "normal range," they are out of whack with each other. If you have symptoms, go see Dr. Wilson. He will help you figure it out." (May 2008)

Oh- they're normal, want a pill, a psychiatrist? Finally a year ago, a walking test book of thyroid symptoms, my labs were out of range and I was put on a pediatric dose of Synthroid. I tried 2 more endocrinologists and a rheumatologist trying to get something that worked. Then a dear friend referred me to Dr. Webber and Katie his nurse and my life started to change. Dr. Webber put his arms around me and cried with me and apologized for the lack of care I had had for so long. It has only been 8 weeks, but I can get through a day now and still prepare dinner. Dr. Handwerger took the time and was skilled at understanding my complex endocrine situation. I had seen other endocrinologists who just shoved me for one doctor to another without ever helping. Everyone should have a doctor like him. He listens, cares and is determined to help. He will get to the bottom of your problem and come up with a solution." (May 2008)
A reader writes:
"I wanted to take the time to post my terrific experience with Dr. Handwerger. Like you, I was diagnosed with Hashimotos thyroiditis. All the doctors I went to insisted that I didn't need treatment although my TSH was always hovering between 3.5-5.5 and even a few times spiked to 7. They just told me that there was nothing I can do and when I requested more testing for free hormones they just said"it wasn't necessary". In the meantime I put on 30 pounds and my life began to fall apart. I just had no motivation and worse no energy to do anything. My menses began to become irregular, libido died and my hair began falling out. Basically, I was witnessing my life just unraveling.
I found Dr. Handwerger from your site and went to him.
He was warm and caring and totally listened to me. I went prepared to do battle, like in the past, with printed information to convince him to treat me with natural Armour thyroid. To my surprise he told me I didn't have to worry that he would take care of me and help restore balance in my life.
He ran all the tests, free T3 and free T4, without me even asking. As I suspected my free T3 was officially low.
He prescribed for me the medicine I have needed for so long and then helped me to loose the 30 pounds that had disfigured my body.
I am forever indebted to Dr. Handwerger for saving me and for being a caring doctor and human being. He helped give me my life back.
Thank you for your web site as without I never would have found him." (March 2009)

And: he showed how with a simple reflex test, they used to diagnose

(I don't know whether he's affiliated with the university, however.)
I don't know if you're only looking for "top docs" who are specialists

Another reader recommends Dr. Becker: "I never felt better than during the 20 years

I moved out of state and now have to find another Dr. in Arizona. I

Becker saved my life.

compassion. I urge anyone discouraged with their current regimen to

Another fan:
"I love this man. I initially sought help 8 years ago as I had gained a great deal of weight after my first child was born, and did not feel well. I was told that my thyroid levels were "normal." (This was from a GP, so she can be forgiven.) 5 years ago, I sought assistance from an endocrinologist, as I was not able to conceive my second child. She told me that I needed to eat less and exercise more, and there was no endocrinological explanation for my fertility problems. Sigh.... After my children were born (after 30K in fertility treatments) I began to gain even more weight, and feel even worse. I sought help from another endocrinologist. He listened to my story, and went through what I ate in a normal day, and told me "that's not enough calories." Duh! He ran some token tests, and then called me and told me that my thyroid was "normal" and that my problem was "portion control" and "lack of exercise", and that I really needed to find some discipline. I was livid. At this point, I would have probably given up (I thought maybe it was all my fault, and there really was nothing wrong with me), but I had other medical issues that necessitated an annual visit to the endocrinologist. I did some research, and found out about Dr. Becker, and made an appointment with him. He asked me lots of questions, and told me that I was classic hypothyroid and prediabetic. His thyroid antibody tests revealed that, although my T3 and T4 levels are technically very low normal, my thyroid antibodies are about 7x those of a normal person. I have Hashimoto's Disease, which any of these other geniuses should have been able to detect if they ever felt my thyroid, or ran tests beyond the purely perfunctory ones. I guess that they just assume that people with these symptoms are making them up. Eureka! I have been on Synthroid for 2 months now. I can actually get out of bed in the morning, my migraine headaches have diminished, and my formerly horribly heavy and painful periods are much more bearable. Though he told me that typically the Synthroid does not cause weight loss, my clothes are now hanging on me. I think I've already said this, but I love this man. He is the only one who would listen to me, and help me without just reciting idiotic platitudes, and I will be forever grateful. The only bad thing that I can say about him is that he does not accept any insurance, and my first office visit was $1,200." (October 2006)
Another fan:
After being politely ignored by both a GP and an Endocrinologist
(both FEMALE) as to my suspicion of Hypothyroidism, I called my
mother in tears. I truly thought I was simply insane. She swore that
I hadn't been the same since I contracted Mononucleosis and that she
believed it had something to do with what was wrong. After hunting on
the web I found this site and Dr. Becker. He spent the majority of my
appointment asking questions and LISTENING to my responses. He told
me that I likely had a genetic vulnerability to thyroid disease, that
very likely the mono (Epstein-Barr) had triggered antibodies to
attack my thyroid, and that my metabolism and endocrine system had
been compromised, resulting in the hell I had been going through. A
simple but thorough exam led to me understand that no one had
properly examined my thyroid, ever, that the simple reflex test he
did would suggest hyper or hypothyroidism, and that the blood tests
he would order were ranges he would use along with my symptoms to
treat my disease. He is extremely well informed and most
importantly, listens. I highly recommend him." (October 2006)
Another fan:
"Dr. Becker works magic. I was on thyroid medication for 8 years, complaining I was still exhausted. I was misdiagnosed repeatedly with everything from Epstein Barr (liver out of whack is thyroid problem) to GERD (digestive tract was off, to rosacea (I was allergic to the Synthroid I took) and anemia (I took iron and ultimately couldn't drink water without pain because the iron was ripping apart my insides) ~ I went to 3 doctors, including those at Stanford who were dismally incompetent and dismissive. Knowing I have a history of severe thyroid disease in my family should have been a clue. The best anyone could muster was my numbers looked great....except my antibodies were 150X what they should have been and I was always dead tired. Dr. Becker is a walking encyclopedia of thyroid knowledge; he blends science with his genuine concern about how you feel and works magic. I bow to his expertise and am more thankful than words could ever express for his continuing help and guidance...my family is pretty happy too....."(August 2007)
Another reader writes:
"I credit this doctor with saving my life, without exaggeration. I was suffering from debilitating depression, fatigue, memory fog, and was not getting better under the care of a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist referred me to a therapist. The therapist, bless his heart, listened to my symptoms, ordered some bloodwork, and referred me to Dr. Becker. Dr. Becker finally gave me answers and explanations, as well as treatment. Hashimoto's thyroiditis, PCOS, Diabetes type 2, and Epstein barr... six years later, I am happy, healthy, no longer suicidal or in a fog, and I thank Dr. Becker for his unique ability to merge medical knowledge and skill with compassion and
intuition. Highly recommend!" (July 2008)

Dr. Quan-Yang Duh, Endocrine surgeon, UCSF Medical Center, 400

- 6th floor San Francisco, CA 94115 415-353-2161 Dr. Duh was recommended,
following a 3rd opinion that I was getting from UCSF. Coming from a
small community in the foothills of the Mother Lode of California, I
felt it was necessary to get a number of opinions about the thyroid
nodule that I had. The UCSF staff seemed thorough and complete in their
review of my case. At this point they suggested Dr. Duh as the best
fit for my personality (more than a little anxious, very well prepared
with lots of questions, and demanding of the best care possible). On
the off chance I might get an appointment the same day (this seemed
very unlikely) we went to the Department of Surgery and were told we
could be seen if we were willing to wait. The first thing that convinced
me that Dr. Duh cared for patients was the fact that the staff said
they had been directed to find time for patients who had traveled long
distances to get a consult. Dr. Duh spent 30 minutes answering all of
our questions and set up a surgery date (he had to work a bit to make
it happen as quickly as we wished). He then said that anytime I had
a question to be sure and call and he would try to answer it. On the
pre-op visit I had a question no one could answer, so Dr. Duh was paged
and spoke with me for about 10 minutes on the phone until I was satisfied.
I was most impressed with how he completely and carefully listed to
my concerns and questions. He then gave careful, thoughtful and sensitive
answers, even though I suspect he has heard the same questions countless
times before. Following my surgery, he even made a special trip by my
room to speak with my wife because there had been a problem with seeing
her earlier. He was very encouraging, knowledgeable, and most importantly,
took my need for information and support very seriously. The surgery
seemed to go flawlessly and my recovery was very rapid. Besides being
Department Chair, Dr. Duh has published at least three books, as well
as numerous (70+) articles and assorted other written works. I hope
this information will help anyone out there who is trying to find a
well-qualified and caring surgeon.
Another supporter for Dr. Duh He is known internationally and is in surgery 4 days

extensive research written papers and is on the cutting edge of technology.
I live in Reno Nevada and he calls me on the phone!!! Unbelievable man.
He's one in a million. Instead of opting to remove my thyroid which
is always an easy fix with a nodule we are watching it. Much rather
do that than let someone remove it!! I used to employ two-way radio
technicians there were those that would remove the whole board and replace

More praise from a reader for Dr. Duh: "Dr. Duh performed surgery on me in 1996
and removed a large multi nodular
goiter from my chest without having to crack the sternum. He is gifted,
kind, and listens to all your concerns. Recently, I had some suspicious
lymph nodes show up in my neck and I faxed the ultra sound report to
his office. He called me that night to talk about the report! I now
live 500 miles away but if I need surgery again, I will go to him. He
is completely open and has no "stuff" about how one looks, or sexual
orientation or anything; he just loves what he does and wants to help."

Another reader recommends Dr. Duh: "My mom was diagnosed with a goiter. It was
growing down into her chest cavity, which was resulting in a shortness of breath. I found this website
and after reading a lot of the testimonials on this site, I knew Dr. Duh was the doctor she needed to see.
My parents are uninsured, but this was no problem. Dr. Duh was kind, professional, and really knows
what he is doing. I would highly recommend Dr. Duh and the University of California-San Francisco

you to make sure you keep scheduled time. He is really good and the
Hospital he works out of is even better (California Pacific Hospital

Another reader recommends Dr. Kimmerling: I agree...Dr. Kimmerling was the only
doctor to discover my probably
lifelong thyroid problem. Even my physician who is a Harvard Graduate
didn't discover it (but he's not a Thyroid specialist). Dr. Kimmerling
FOUND the reason why I wasn't losing weight, feeling lethargic and even
though my TSH level wasn't 10, it was slight enough to make my symptoms
real and cause problems. So I feel like I actually have a new lease
on life...and I believe if you tell him straight out what you think
the problem is, he'll give you his professional medical opinion and
be supportive. (Added 2/03)

He is a masterful surgeon. If you are going for thyroid surgery, he is the doctor to choose. I chose him because he works at UCSF and does many thyroid surgeries each week. And if there is a chance my vocal chords could be damaged, I wanted someone with a lot of experience. Since my surgeries, I have had many doctors ask me who did my surgery; as apparently as far as scares go, mine is a masterpiece. You can hardly see it now, and I had the surgeries 8 months ago. Dr. Kebebew has many patients, you may wait awhile to see him, but he is worth the wait. Another reader writes:
"Thanks to this site, I found Dr. Shames. When I first saw Dr. Shames, I was in very bad shape because I had belonged to an HMO and it only believed that its patients needed one type of thyroid medication (synthroid) which was deadly to me. Synthroid caused me to swell up like a balloon. I was trying to exercise but would run short of breath and I was on the verge of being diagnosed with congestive heart failure from all of the water my body was retaining. My doctor at the HMO just kept telling me that I needed to diet and exercise more. I was barely eating anything and I would walk when I wasn't short of breath. I really felt like I was going to die at the ripe old age of 34. Dr. Shames asked me if I would be willing to try Armor or Naturethroid. He explained that both of these medications contained natural T3 and he believed that my body likely needed that. I tried Armor, and I need a large dosage to keep going, but Dr. Shames has been willing to work with me on what my body needs. I am now 42 and much healthier than I was at 34. "I cannot begin to voice my everlasting thanks to "my doc of all docs" Dr. Ross Mcdougall. I can honestly state that if not for him and the unbelievable staff at Stanfords thyroid clinic I would not be writing this today! I have been seeing Dr. Mac (& fab Julie at the front desk) for the last 25 years!!!!! Yes, 25 years! I had my thyroid removed the summer of 1983, at the age of 10 years old due to cancer. That had been previously undiagnosed until the June morning that I was put under for what was explained to my mother as routine "exploratory" surgery. I had been to a half a dozen other or more specialists and doctors thruout the Bay area, even enduring a needle biopsy that produced no clear results as to what was wrong with me. After my surgery I was sent to the clinic at Stanford hospital and began my life long relationship with Dr. Mac and Julie (who I believe began working for him on or about only my second visit) I was only ten years old at the time. I am now expecting my 36th birthday this coming May, and I truly don't believe that I could ever say this without the care I received from Dr. Mac. I can best describe him as a very matter-of-fact, direct, caring doctor. Who's only concern at the time of my visits (way too many to count anymore) was me and my over all health and well being. He always took the time to ask about all aspects of my life. Showing true concern for my over all physical health, including mental and emotional well being - states which all connect to your thyroid health. Not just concerned with the numbers of what my blood work tests showed. As I grew older and no longer visited with my mother. He always asked of her and a sister as well with other thyroid related health issues. Even though they even not patients of his, sending regards. Julie in his front office hasn't changed in the past 25 years. Her smiling face behind that desk at each and every visit, was the most warming and comforting site to me as a small child. I will never be able to show my unbelievable gratitude to both of them. Dr. Mac & Stanford hospital saved my life. Thank you for each and everyday you have gifted to me." (March 2009)

Areas of practice: thyroid optimization with T4/T3 and straight T3 preparations. Treats all types of hypothyroidism, including standard (primary),
secondary (pituitary dysfunction), tertiary (hypothalamic), which result
in normal or low TSH with sub-optimal T4 and T3 levels, low T3 syndromes,
poor conversion of T4 to T3, high reverse T3 (Wilson's syndrome), thyroid
receptor resistance syndromes, which results in hypothyroidism with
normal thyroid blood levels, difficult thyroid cases, chronic fatigue,
fibromyalgia. Also treats all other hormonal deficiencies including
adrenal, testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, HGH, and natural pharmaceutical compounded medications.

PLEASE be sure to check w/your state's medical board to see if the doctor you're considering is Board
Certified, and if so, in what. It's NOT essential, but it helps to know. Also, for most of us, insurance

general medicine today; it's worth it to research the efficacy & safety of these options before paying for

"I would like to
recommend Dr. Allan Lane. I found Dr. Lane about four years ago and
his treatments have made a big difference in my life. He is an internist
who practices preventive and traditional medicine using many alternative
therapies, natural hormones and Armour thyroid. He is very knowledgeable
and thorough and makes sure I understand everything. I feel so much
better now, even my friends have commented on how much better I look."

Another fan:
"This is a very caring and knowledgeable physician. I highly recommend Dr. Lane. He has helped me tremendously. I had uncontrollable asthma, was suffering during menopause (hot flashes, night sweats, depression), have a hypothyroid condition (including weight gain) and have had insomnia for 27 years. My regular physician had me on so many prescriptions for my asthma (up to 6 at one time) and I just kept getting sicker and sicker. They also would not put me on HRT but wanted me on Zoloft instead. Since I've been treated by Dr. Lane, I'm off of all my asthma meds except for my emergency inhaler, am on bioidentical HRT and thyroid medication and feel great, better than I have for a long time, and I have shed all the weight I had gained in the past few years! The only complaint left to conquer is my insomnia and he will begin working with me on that in the coming months. I have so much faith in him, I believe he will find a solution that no one else has." A reader writes:
"Dr. Jew took over Dr. Robert Dreibelbis' practice in Tustin, CA. Dr. Jew is located in the same office that Dr. Dreibelbis was located in. Dr. Jew is very much like Dr. Dreibelbis in that he takes the time to sit down and listen to his patients. He is very knowledgeable about thyroid diseases and has studied the works of Dr. Broda Barnes who I believe is credited with being the first doctor to endorse the use of Armour Thyroid and say that patients need T3 as well as T4. Dr. Jew will prescribe Armour Thyroid. He also is very concerned about a patient's symptoms and has a check list of symptoms that the patient checks off to help Dr. Jew monitor progress with Armour Thyroid treatment. He is a wonderful doctor, kind, caring and he takes time to listen and speak with his patients. He actually sat down with me on my last appointment and spent a full 20 minutes with me educating me on Hashimoto's Thyroidtitis and listened to my concerns and needs. I highly recommend Dr. Jew and give him four out of four stars!" (March 2009)

Donald L. Coursey M.D., Ears, Nose & Throat, 1165 S. Dora St., Ukiah, CA 95482, 707-462-8855. A reader writes: "He has taken care of me for a number of years for problems with my Parotid Glands, (which where also hard to diagnosis), both of which he had to remove for me. I was in for a yearly check-up when he asked me about a lump in my throat. I told him that other doctors said it was nothing to worry about. He wanted to know if he had missed it or if it was new. I told him it was about a year old, but had appeared after my last visit with him. He decided to do an Ultrasound, & then a biopsy and found it was cancer. He removed it along with my thyroid which also contained cancer cells. He sent me to San Francisco to a specialist for more extensive tests to make sure that all of the cancer was removed. He monitors my meds & I feel great as long as no one else tries to mess with my dosage. He had done 5 surgeries on my throat and none of the scars are visible. He uses me as an example to other patients. Has also used my case history to do a talk at a drs. convention. My GP was there and quite embarrassed when she found that she knew nothing of my problems. I changed my GP a few months later, am using a doctor that is also listed on your page, Dr. Wedderburn, & I agree she is great, but have stayed with Dr. Coursey for my throat, even though he is a busy doctor all I have to do is call & he fits me in quickly. Dr. Sevilla, General practice/internist/primary care, Endocrinologist, 15211 Vanowen St., Suite 100
Van Nuys, CA, 91405, (818) 778-1920
A reader writes:
Seeing Dr. Sevilla after many attempts to find a good doctor has been like a breath of fresh air. I finally found a doctor who is not bound to test numbers but how I feel. She is smart, informed, and logical in her decision making and shows a genuine interest in my health. She is not patronizing and makes me feel like I am in charge of my treatment plan." (March 2009)
Ventura
Martha Gonzalez, Endocrinology/Women's Health Martha Gonzalez, M.D.,
MPH 116 North Brent Street, Ventura, CA 93003 805-656-4311 A reader
writes: "She is well versed in reading between the lines when tests
results are one thing and how you feel is another. She also took time
to do reflex testing as well as asking many questions."
Another reader writes: She is awesome. I have had a thyroid problem for 20 years
now. All the
other doctors I've been to have said it's enlarged but working normally.
My first visit to Dr. Gonzales, she put me on the meds I needed immediately
and less than a week later, I feel like a new person. She recognized
all my symptoms immediately and showed genuine concern."
Another reader recommends Dr. Gonzalez: "Dr. Martha Gonzalez is a top doc because
she cares. She is truly in
the business of healing peoples ills. She wants to help you feel better
in the best way for you. Using a treatment you will feel comfortable
with. Two and one half years I have been looking for answers to my symptoms.
I don't even want to begin to tell you the frustration and self-doubt
I have been through with many physicians and specialist. Dr. Gonzalez
took one look at a test done in September of 2001 and knew I had Hashimoto's
Disease. She put me on meds immediately. She takes the time to answer
any questions you may have. She explains herself, the disease, the treatment
in detail because she wants you to be informed. I feel I can trust her
judgment and if I have questions she will talk to you about my doubts.
At last, a health professional I can trust to listen to me and give
me meds that I need. If I got one more box of Viox I was going to have
a real anxiety attack." (Added 2/03)
A reader writes: "I had a thyroidectomy in 1992, since then I have had a lot of doctors
(changing medical groups, moving, etc.). There have only been two thyroid doctors worth their weight
in gold. Dr. Martha Gonzalez in Ventura and Dr. Boris Catz in Beverly Hills. Dr. Gonzales is my
current doctor. I have what I would call a resistance to synthroid. Only Armour thyroid in large doses
works on me. I have had MDs all over switch me back and forth to synthroid, even when I begged them
not to. Sure enough, I would go into a deep depression and feel horrible from head to toe. Dr. Gonzales
listened to me. Now I feel great again. There can never be enough said about a doctor who listens and
is willing to try and make you feel better - even if that is not what the "norm" would agree to." (Added:
Dec. 04)
Another reader recommends Dr. Gonzalez:
"Not only is Dr. Gonzalez a great listener and warm and caring, but she really knows her stuff! Unlike
a lot of endocrinologists, she only does thyroid disease and hormone replacement for women. Dr.
Gonzalez has advanced training in nutrition and public health and likes to put her patients on vitamins.
The ones she prescribed for me really help me. She likes synthroid, but is willing to prescribe other
medications including natural thyroxine for those who want it." (Added 10/05)
Another
recommendation: "Dr. Gonzales is simply the best. I had suspected I had hypothyroidism
for years, but all the doctors I went to stated that I didn't. I saw Dr. Gonzales and she took the time to
talk with me about my symptoms
and did extensive lab work. Turns out I was hypothyroid after all. I have seen her for 5 years. I moved
about 2 hours away from her location a few years ago, but I still travel to Ventura to see her. I am
currently pregnant, and she is the ONLY person I would trust with regulating my meds during my
pregnancy. She is warm and kind and I always feel supported and listened to. She is simply the best."

I went to Dr. Cohen after multiple consults with physicians in Los Angeles and San Diego for my thyroid nodule. The FNA was suspicious so I was recommended to have a hemithyroidectomy to make sure it's not cancerous. From consultation to surgery and aftercare, Dr. Cohen was second to none. He spent a great deal of time explaining the surgery and the possible risks. Surgery went great and he is one of only 3 surgeons in California that I know who does Minimally Invasive Thyroidectomy. I stayed overnight and went home the next morning with minimal pain and a normal voice. I cannot say enough about Dr. Cohen, he is truly the best and most caring surgeon I've ever met!" (March 2009)

I met the best doctor in years finally was able to help me after years of suffering with all the symptoms of my thyroid problems.
