A reader writes: "I would like to add my recommendation of Dr. Paula Luber to your site. I have Hashimoto's and endured years of not feeling well while being treated "by the book". Finally, I decided to seek counsel outside the group of doctors I was seeing. At Dr. Luber's recommendation, I began taking Armour Thyroid in place of a synthetic and began to notice a difference almost at once. Adjusting the dosage to what worked took a little time but she was always helpful and willing to listen to how I was feeling, not just what my "numbers" were. Dr. Luber seemed genuinely excited at the improvements I was seeing. Probably my most exciting moment was going to the HMO for a different issue and finding out I had a 65 pulse. I am a 46 year old female who has had joint pains for 20-years. Early menopause hit me at 40. At which point I went to four different gynecologists who turned me away because I was too young. I then turned to a local well-known endocrinologist in Goleta Dr. D. S., who was compassionate and recognized the hormone problem, anemia, and B12 deficiency right away. She also noted that my thyroid gland seemed enlarged; yet felt it was fat around the gland. Dr. D. S. stated that it appeared that my body was not repairing due to fact that I had tendonitis and carpal tunnel in both hands and arms, yet did not have an answer for this problem. I was diagnosed with low thyroid (YES even though my numbers are well into the normal range and he requested I purchase the book THYROID POWER) and he immediately put me on ARMOUR thyroid. On the 4th-day I woke up a new person approximately 3-minutes prior to the alarm rather than hitting the snooze for 10-12 slaps. Additionally the pain in my joints went down about 25%. By the 7th-day, the first day on a full dose, I had amorous thoughts about my husband and it had been years since I had an actual sex drive. Additionally the pain in my body was down by about 50% and I was now sleeping like a rock. For 23-years I have blamed my husbands snoring for my not sleeping; now I cannot tell you if he snores. So in the last two weeks I have made appointments with bad I feel better than I have felt in 20-years, and I am not taking any anti-inflammatory drugs or steroids for the first time that I can remember." He retired, then was asked to take over a friend's practice in Marysville after the friend's death. That was several years ago. He now has offices in Marysville and Sacramento (near the airport and Arco Arena), and specializes in HRT, thyroid and weight loss. I consider him a terrific diagnostician -- and have recommended him to friends, with good results. After listening to my various symptoms, he told me that he thought we were dealing with menopause, hypothyroid and fibromyalgia, and that he thought my symptoms were interrelated. (At the time, I was on Synthroid, and TSH tests looked like things were fine, although I felt horrible, achy, foggy, depressed and exhausted.) He tested (including T3, Free; Thyroxine, Free, Direct; T3, Reverse; and TPO) and found that I was hypometabolic, had very low ferritin levels, and deficiencies of Vitamins B and D. He's prescribed T3 and a bioidentical hormone combination through a local compounding pharmacy and some vitamin supplements, in addition to the Synthroid I'd previously been on.
