CALIFORNIA:
THYROID TOP DOCTORS DIRECTORY

The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care. Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. The doctor may be brilliant and innovative, but have a terrible bedside manner. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment. Please let me know if you have feedback -- positive or negative -- about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your "top" doctor.

Thanks! -- Mary

Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?

Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.
* The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
* The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
* The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
* Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.
* Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.

Palm Springs

Dr Neal Rouzier M.D. Hormone Dr 760-322-9475. 2825 Tahquitz Canyon Way, Suite B200, Palm Springs, CA 92262 760-320-4292 fax 760-322-9475 hormonedoc@earthlink.net One reader testifies that "Dr Rouzier was the fourth Dr I saw seeking help for my thyroid. And the first to help me, he found that I was Hypothyroid with a low T3. He put me on 2 grains of Armour Thyroid and in just a month, I feel like my life has been given back to me."

Another listing for Dr. Rouzier:
Palm Desert, 77564 Country Club Drive, Unit B320, Palm Desert, CA, 760-772-8883."My daughter-in-law found this doctor on this web-site in Palm Springs. That was February 15, 2002. From August 25, 2001 until 8 days ago, I've suffered from hypothyroidism and the treatment with 2 mgs of Synthroid - prescribed (with little attention to a complete physical, etc.,) by doctors in Laughlin, NV. Nothing was working! I was extremely fatigued; my hair kept thinning - I had rapid pulse; couldn't sleep - and felt I'd be dead by the end of the year if something didn't change. When I arrived at my son's house on February 14 in Palm Desert, I was sick - collapsed, and thanks to Sandy being so determined to find a doctor on the inter-net, I'm feeling like a brand new person today. She found the doctor and he took me in on March 4, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. Unfortunately I was very ill with a severe bronchial infection, but he handled the illness; prescribed medicine for my anxiety, and told me I'd been overdosed all these months by way too high of a dosage of Synthroid. He made me wait 10 days without taking any type of thyroid replacement - so I could eliminate the Synthroid and also recover from the illness. Then on March 11 he started me natural thyroid replacement program. Today is March 15 and I've just finished walking 1.5 miles at a brisk pace with little fatigue. I've hung out one load of clothes; fixed breakfast (now that I have an appetite again), and have had a sound night's sleep since he gave me the proper medication to assist me in this. I urge anyone who's suffering like I have to call this doctor and if he's not available to add you as his patient, please read what I'm taking (the 2 grains of Armour Thyroid) and go straight to an accredited doctor with a print-out of not only this testimonial, but the one on page 5 of 10 pages on this site - written by another individual who said, "He put me on 2 grains of Armour Thyroid and in just a month my life has been given back to me." It was her testimonial that caused me to pick him on the 15th of February. So I felt it necessary to add mine so we can continue to help others who've been so ill."

Another reader writes:
"For 5 years I struggled with my health, even reaching the point whereI could hardly get out of bed. I went from doctor to doctor, many of them highly recommended butnothing they did made a difference. They put me on Synthroid, Westhroid, and Armour Thyroid, and was even treated for Wilson's Syndrome and nothing worked. Then I went to Dr. Neil Rouzier and almost overnight my health turned around. Neil Rouzier works with compounding pharmacies and he prescribed a compounded thyroid medicine. What a difference! I finally, after 5 years, am getting my lifeback. Almost all of my symptoms, except the excess weight, have disappeared. I highly recommend him, especially to someone who has tried all the other thyroid medications and found they don't work for them. Get your life back, visit Dr. Rouzier." (Added: June 2004)

Another fan:
"After my G.P. put me on Armor, (at my request) I became Hyper-Thyroid, but my TSH was within normal limits so he would not adjust the dosage. I asked him to refer me to an endocrinologist, which he did. The endocrinologist was awful! He is the type of doctor we all read about, and hope to never meet. He took me off of Armor and returned me to the lowest dosage of Synthroid I had ever been on. I was so exhausted that I could barely get out of bed. I read about Dr. Rouzier on this website and decided I needed to give him a try. Dr. Rouzier is wonderful. He listens to me when I tell him how I am feeling and will explain what he thinks is the cause and how best to treat it. He put me back on the same dosage of Armor as my G.P., but had me space out the dosage during the day. For the first time in years, I feel like a "normal" person." (Added Dec. 2006)

Palo Alto

Dr. Elizabeth Fraze, Endocrinology, 1101 Welch Road, Suite C-5, Palo Alto, CA 94304, (650) 853-1353, efrazemd@aol.com. A reader writes: "Dr. Fraze is excellent. She spent two hours just talking to me prior to a thorough physical. She listened intently and asked many many questions. In the last 5 years, I have been sent to three different endocrinologists due to 'out of range' blood tests. Each of them summarily dismissed the numbers (too close to normal range) and sent me away. She has (and continues) to make all the difference in my health and attitude. She is also hypothyroid, allowing her to understand - and to provide her own personal anecdotes. She keeps in touch with all of my other doctors and they collectively work on my health. I highly recommend her." (Added 3/03)

Pasadena

Simon Barker, Naturopathic Doctor, 740 North Lake Avenue, Pasadena, 91104, Ph/Fax: 626-794-4668, www.paracelsusla.com, paracelsusla@yahoo.com. A reader writes: "Dr. Barker, ND, and his colleague Dr. Daniel Brousseau, DO, work extensively with patients with thyroid conditions. In many cases, patients have been frustrated for years in trying to get back their energy and enthusiasm. As a CranioSacral Therapist working in this natural family health practice, I hear the patients' stories and great appreciation for the doctors great care!" (Added Dec. 2006)

Another reader writes:
"We would first like to THANK YOU for all your hard work and for posting this website!!! We had to "kiss a lot of frogs" to find our gem of a dr. to help us with Hashimoto's. And, after phoning Numerous Dr's listed on your website, AND before that, seeing an endocrinologist for over 3 yrs with little and no progress, we are pleased to share on your list a Naturopath, who works with each patient on a compassionate, caring basis. He uses a natural approach and will prescribe T-3 as needed." (August 2007)

Pasadena

Daniel Brousseau, DO, 740 N. Lake Avenue, Pasadena, CA 91104, (626) 794-4668. A reader writes: "Armour thyroid, natural approach" (Added: June 2004)

Pasadena

Ralph B. Martin -- MD, Internist and Endocrinologist 626-792-4115, Website: http://www.ralphmartin.com "Dr. Martin is a rare rare find in my book. He is not only educated but he is an educator. He says -- as I paraphrase -- 'We have a partnership -- you and I, a partnership in your health. You are 51% of the partnership at least.' He is open-minded and knowledgeable about western and eastern philosophies. He believes in the mind-body connection and works to help his patients on many levels -- many that most doctors would not even consider. A real human being in the highest sense of the word. He was voted one of America's Best Doctor's by other doctors."

Pasadena

Dr. Charles Sharp -- no longer listed

Pasadena

Marlys R Drange, Endocrinology, 800 S Fairmont Ave, # 310, Pasadena, CA 91105, 626-795-2663/626-795-2012. A reader writes: "Dr. Drange REALLY listens and takes the time to review your concerns. She explains every step and every result. She will call you at home -- even to let you know there has been no change in your TSH levels. She's very considerate." (Added 4/04)

Another fan of Dr. Drange:
"She is smart, sensitive, and compassionate. She will discuss options with you. She was able to see that a small dosage was working for me while my internist just wanted me to stop. She knows about what is available. She has a nice bedside manner and respects the patient. I agree with the other poster, she does make calls herself." (Added 10/05)

A reader writes:
"Dr. Drange took the time to run all of the tests and figure out I gain weight and feel lethargic with a tsh of 6.13. My other doctor did not bother to monitor my health. She also explained she treats on a case by case basis; some people are hypo-thyroid at 5.0 and do better between 2-4. Great bedside manner and yes, she called me at home to tell me my test results in person. BTW, 5 hmo doctors failed to properly diagnose my Hashimoto Syndrome. They did not listen like Dr. Drange does." (Added Apr 06)

Another reader writes:
"Dr. Drange is amazing. She goes with what's best for the patient. If you don't feel well with what's prescribed she will find out why. She is current on the latest research and will use it to make you well again. She knows things that usually only patients know like the AACE updated TSH reference range or that some people simply cannot tolerate Synthroid and have to go with a natural thyroid or that sometimes Thyroid is just one of the components of fatigue and some other stray hormone may be malfunctioning like insulin or that if you are even a little bit obese that thyroid and or insulin resistance may have just a tad bit something to do with it. She is also very well informed and experienced about BHRT, the downsides and the upsides. And of course she knows about the connection between insulin resistance and Polycystic Ovary Disease. Dr. Drange not only talks to you but she also listens and acts, based on what you tell her." (August 2007)

Another fan:
"I have found Dr. Drange to be an excellent listener and explains things very clearly. So far under her treatment, I have made great improvements with my thyroid condition and feel much better than I did when I first began treatment with her. She is first-rate and I highly recommend her."(August 2007)

Another fan:
"I have found Dr. Drange to be an excellent listener and explains things very clearly. She is first-rate and I highly recommend her." (August 2007)
Another reader: "Dr. Drange is wonderful! I am hypothyroid but have had a hard time getting diagnosed and treated. And to make things worse, I have severe symptoms on all the synthetic thyroid medications (heart palpitations, severe anxiety, etc.). Dr. Drange took a great deal of time talking to me. When my lab results came in, she called me and gave detailed information about my TSH and thyroid antibody levels. I'm going to try Armor, and if that gives me symptoms Dr. Drange wants me to try compounded thyroid. I feel like I finally have an endocrinologist in my corner." (May 2008)

Another fan:
"I agree with all of the other comments listed -- Dr. Drange is wonderful. I had a high TSH but a"normal" free T4. I had gained 60 pounds in the last two years, I was fatigued and fuzzy headed, and my joints were sore. I also have a strong family history of thyroid problems. My primary care physician nevertheless refused to prescribe any thyroid replacement hormones because my free T4 was"within the normal range." (My PCP claimed that the T4 was the only thing she really needed to pay attention to.) I came into Dr. Drange's office ready to lay out all of my research and advocate for treatment. I didn't need to! Dr. Drange took one look at my lab numbers and listened carefully to my symptoms and concluded very quickly that I needed treatment. She was aware of the currently accepted range of lab values and the fact that many doctors and labs are unaware and continue to use outdated ranges. She was also very interested in the fact that my husband and I are trying to conceive. She indicated that my TSH should be no higher than a 2 during pregnancy. She confirmed that I will need to be monitored closely should I become pregnant and she was very proactive in developing a plan of action should my husband and I conceive. It was so wonderful to meet with a doctor who knows her stuff and didn't poo-poo my symptoms as stress or lack of exercise. I highly recommend Dr. Drange!" (March 2009)

A reader writes:
"I found Dr Drange on this site after some very disappointing experiences with other endocrinologists. I was borderline by the old standards but way high for current standards, especially when trying to conceive. Dr Drange confirmed everything I had read about current reference ranges and conception. As soon as I get pregnant she will test me every 4 weeks. That makes me tremendously relieved, as the last doctor didn't even want to medicate me at a TSH level of 4.7 and with elevated antibodies. Dr. Drange also took the time to explain Hashimoto's in depth." (March 2009)

Pasadena

Dr. Michael Lin, Endocrinologist, 50 Bellefontaine St., #308, Pasadena, CA. A reader writes: "Ever since I was diagnosed with Hypo-thyroid, he made sure to do almost every test out there to rule everything out. He was able to keep my thyroid levels stable right away. Although I don't go to him anymore since I've moved, I highly recommend him." (Added Dec. 2006)

Petaluma

Dr. David Chappell Endocrinologist and Metabolism 191 Lynch Creek Way Suite 205 Petaluma, CA 94954 707-762-0001 A reader writes: "I no longer have my thyroid and Dr. Chappell has worked with me for 6 months and we have finally found the correct combination of Synthroid T4 and Cytomel T3. I feel great." (Added 11/02)

Pleasanton

Dr. David Chee, Internal Medicine, Los Positas, Pleasanton, CA 94566, 925-838-6511. A reader writes: "I went to four different doctors to get Armour. He was the only one willing to prescribe it. Everyone else wanted to prescribe Synthroid. My TSH is balanced and has been for 2 years with Armour." (Added 4/04)

Pomona

A reader writes: "I am so thrilled to have finally found Dr. Yogesh Paliwal (Internist), in Pomona, California! He listed, nearly word for word, almost all of the complications and symptoms listed on the About.com site, and has said he will treat "me" and not my "lab tests"! (909) 623-2300"

http://www.ENTexcellence.com. A reader writes: "He has a very special attitude with treating each patient. He takes as much time as needed and explains everything that is going on. He treats the problem, not what he could make the most from. Everyone that has treatment with him feels very confident in what he has done." (Added: June 2004)

Redlands

Dr. Steven Wilson, General practice/internist/primary care, 1201 Brookside Avenue Redlands, CA 92373, Redlands, CA 92373, 909-798-3331. A reader writes: "I had been suffering from worsening hypothyroid symptoms for 5 years, but was told by 3 different doctors that my TSH levels were "normal". Not one of them tested my T3 or T4 levels or even mentioned the possibility of Hashimoto's. When my fatigue became bad that I had to stop working, I was lucky enough to find Dr. Wilson. Not only is he a very kind doctor, he knows the broad range of symptoms that come from thyroid problems. He ordered a thyroid panel and we found that I indeed have Hashimoto's. He prescribes Armor first because he has seen it work so well. Dr. Wilson listens to your symptoms and examines your thyroid profile - how the T3, T4, and reverse T3 levels look in relationship with each other. Even though my levels are within "normal range," they are out of whack with each other. If you have symptoms, go see Dr. Wilson. He will help you figure it out." (May 2008)

Redlands

Dr. V Perkel -- NO LONGER LISTED (April 2006)

Redwood City

J. Joseph Prendergast, MD, Endocrinology, 805 Veterans Blvd # 100, Redwood City, CA (650) 368-1411, http://www.endocrinemetabolic.com. "Dr. Prendergast is very open-minded and very aware of new treatments and drugs. He is a great listener and is very patient. He treats diabetes and thyroid disorders in his practice, but also helped my husband get to the bottom of his slow metabolism -- and helped him lose weight. He has helped me control my Hashimoto's for more than 5 years. In our opinion, he is one of the best doctors around. He has heart disease in his family is also very aware of the latest methods to help diagnose and prevent heart disease. He often lectures. I wouldn't go to anyone else to manage my Hashimoto's. Although he doesn't take insurance, he is worth every penny and spends lots of time with you." (added 1/04)

Another reader writes:
"The best doctor I have ever worked with in twelve years of thyroid/metabolic problems." (Added: June 2004)

He has also treated me with Testosterone & estrogen creams, a vitamin / mineral combo, and advocates a low-carbohydrate, high protein diet. I had friends that went to him for Fibromyalgia, which is how I heard about him. Although he is a neurologist by training, he says he loves endocrinology and has read a lot in this area. He does a lot of blood testing initially to determine deficiencies etc, before making an individual, personal assessment. I was diagnosed in 1999 but it wasn't until I found Dr. McMullen in 2002 that I felt I was on the road to getting "me" back. It was Dr. McMullen that diagnosed me with Hashimoto's disease. Another reader writes:
"Listens to patients and spends time with them." (Added 11/02)

Another fan:
"I am 59 years old and have searched for a Dr. to help me for over 40 years to no avail. In the last 30 yrs. drs would say it sounds like a thyroid problem, lets run some labs. Oh- they're normal, want a pill, a psychiatrist? Finally a year ago, a walking test book of thyroid symptoms, my labs were out of range and I was put on a pediatric dose of Synthroid. I tried 2 more endocrinologists and a rheumatologist trying to get something that worked. Then a dear friend referred me to Dr. Webber and Katie his nurse and my life started to change. Dr. Webber put his arms around me and cried with me and apologized for the lack of care I had had for so long. It has only been 8 weeks, but I can get through a day now and still prepare dinner. I am so thankful to have found this wonderful Dr. Webber. He knows what he is doing and it is all natural. " (Added Dec. 2006)

Note: Be aware that Dr. Webber's treatment program typically includes at least three to four visits. The first visit can cost as much as $650, and return visits approximately $250 each or more.

San Diego

Dr. Erin Castelloe, Family Practice, Scripps Cllinic, San Diego, CA, (858) 764-3200. A reader writes: "Dr. Castelloe is caring, and a good listener. When I told her I still felt tired on levoxyl, along with the inability to lose weight, she sent me to an endocrinologist who told me "what do you expect, you have hypothyroidism". When she heard that she wrote a prescription for Cytomel and apologized for sending me to a doctor like that." (Added 1/06)

San Diego

Dr. Joyce W. Chung, Endocrinology & Metabolism, 8933 Activity Rd, San Diego, CA 92126,858-653-6079/ Fax: 858-653-6117. When going in for check ups she asks me how I feel before even looking at my numbers. She is open to my suggestions and concerns about my medication and is never defensive. She is such a great doctor." (Added Apr 06)

Note: Dr. Chung reportedly only accepts patients by referral from other physicians.

San Diego

Dr. Ian Moore, Naturopathic Medicine, 11650 Iberia Place, Suite 136, San Diego, CA 92128, 858-442-7100. A reader writes: "Unlike my primary care doctor, Dr. Moore took the time to listen and understand my complaints. Despite my "normal" test results, I was determined to be hypothyroid after more comprehensive testing. My doctor missed my diagnosis because she spent 5 minutes with me and assumed I was depressed and needed anti-depressants. Now after being on a low dose of Armour thyroid I am feeling like myself again. I found out from this that sometimes you have to pay for quality time spent with a doctor...but it was well worth it." (June 2006).

San Diego

Bronner Handwerger, General practice/internist/primary care, Naturopathic Doctor, 3268 Governor Drive, San Diego, CA, 92122, 858-254-5433, www.docbron.com, docbron@docbron.com. He treated my slow thyroid and my energy came back and the weight that I had gained fell off. He is a life saver."(August 2007)

Another reader writes:
Dr. Handwerger took the time and was skilled at understanding my complex endocrine situation. I had seen other endocrinologists who just shoved me for one doctor to another without ever helping. He immediately honed in and was able to determine my needs. He changed my medicines and within a few days I was like my old self again. If it wasn't for him I would have continued to suffer. Everyone should have a doctor like him. He listens, cares and is determined to help. He will get to the bottom of your problem and come up with a solution." (May 2008)

A reader writes:
"I wanted to take the time to post my terrific experience with Dr. Handwerger. Like you, I was diagnosed with Hashimotos thyroiditis. All the doctors I went to insisted that I didn't need treatment although my TSH was always hovering between 3.5-5.5 and even a few times spiked to 7. They just told me that there was nothing I can do and when I requested more testing for free hormones they just said"it wasn't necessary". In the meantime I put on 30 pounds and my life began to fall apart. I just had no motivation and worse no energy to do anything. My menses began to become irregular, libido died and my hair began falling out. Basically, I was witnessing my life just unraveling. I found Dr. Handwerger from your site and went to him. He was warm and caring and totally listened to me. I went prepared to do battle, like in the past, with printed information to convince him to treat me with natural Armour thyroid. To my surprise he told me I didn't have to worry that he would take care of me and help restore balance in my life. He ran all the tests, free T3 and free T4, without me even asking. As I suspected my free T3 was officially low. He prescribed for me the medicine I have needed for so long and then helped me to loose the 30 pounds that had disfigured my body. I am forever indebted to Dr. Handwerger for saving me and for being a caring doctor and human being. He helped give me my life back. Thank you for your web site as without I never would have found him." (March 2009)

A reader recommends Dr. Nathan Becker. Endocrinologist, UCSF Parnasus St. "Research doc. On top of latest medical info. Does research. Every other doc thought I was having mid life crisis except him. Extremely knowledgeable and understanding."

More praise for Dr. Becker:
A reader writes: "Dr. Nathan Becker in San Francisco is currently helping me. He is the first person in my whole life who ever FELT my thyroid. And: he showed how with a simple reflex test, they used to diagnose hypothyroidism before these crazy lab tests. Dr. Becker's office is located in the University of California, San Francisco medical offices. (I don't know whether he's affiliated with the university, however.) I don't know if you're only looking for "top docs" who are specialists in thyroid/endocrinology, but if you're up for a GP who is great with everything, including my thyroid problem, I've got one! :)"

Another reader recommends Dr. Becker:
"I never felt better than during the 20 years under Dr. Becker's care. I moved out of state and now have to find another Dr. in Arizona. I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Becker. He's on top of recent developments and looks at the WHOLE PERSON, not just a range or graph of "average" stuff. Kaiser refuses to let me take the dose I was on for 20 years and has reduced my Levothroid. After a year, I am experiencing the same old symptoms from 20 years ago. Dr. Becker is tops." (Added 2/03)

Yet another reader praises Dr. Becker:
"With tears in my eyes, I can only say that Dr. Becker saved my life. He is, in a word, brilliant. I test the heck out of him, and he is equal to the task. He's an incredible amalgam of knowledge, raw instinct and compassion. I urge anyone discouraged with their current regimen to fly to San Francisco for a second opinion from this exceptional doctor. It's hard to question any doctor, but I am so glad I did. Thank you for everything Dr. Becker!" (added 1/04)

Another fan of Dr. Becker:
"Dr. Becker restored my life to one worth living." (Added 10/05)

Another fan:
"I love this man. I initially sought help 8 years ago as I had gained a great deal of weight after my first child was born, and did not feel well. I was told that my thyroid levels were "normal." (This was from a GP, so she can be forgiven.) 5 years ago, I sought assistance from an endocrinologist, as I was not able to conceive my second child. She told me that I needed to eat less and exercise more, and there was no endocrinological explanation for my fertility problems. Sigh.... After my children were born (after 30K in fertility treatments) I began to gain even more weight, and feel even worse. I sought help from another endocrinologist. He listened to my story, and went through what I ate in a normal day, and told me "that's not enough calories." Duh! He ran some token tests, and then called me and told me that my thyroid was "normal" and that my problem was "portion control" and "lack of exercise", and that I really needed to find some discipline. I was livid. At this point, I would have probably given up (I thought maybe it was all my fault, and there really was nothing wrong with me), but I had other medical issues that necessitated an annual visit to the endocrinologist. I did some research, and found out about Dr. Becker, and made an appointment with him. He asked me lots of questions, and told me that I was classic hypothyroid and prediabetic. His thyroid antibody tests revealed that, although my T3 and T4 levels are technically very low normal, my thyroid antibodies are about 7x those of a normal person. I have Hashimoto's Disease, which any of these other geniuses should have been able to detect if they ever felt my thyroid, or ran tests beyond the purely perfunctory ones. I guess that they just assume that people with these symptoms are making them up. Eureka! I have been on Synthroid for 2 months now. I can actually get out of bed in the morning, my migraine headaches have diminished, and my formerly horribly heavy and painful periods are much more bearable. Though he told me that typically the Synthroid does not cause weight loss, my clothes are now hanging on me. I think I've already said this, but I love this man. He is the only one who would listen to me, and help me without just reciting idiotic platitudes, and I will be forever grateful. The only bad thing that I can say about him is that he does not accept any insurance, and my first office visit was $1,200." (October 2006)

Another fan:
After being politely ignored by both a GP and an Endocrinologist (both FEMALE) as to my suspicion of Hypothyroidism, I called my mother in tears. I truly thought I was simply insane. She swore that I hadn't been the same since I contracted Mononucleosis and that she believed it had something to do with what was wrong. After hunting on the web I found this site and Dr. Becker. He spent the majority of my appointment asking questions and LISTENING to my responses. He told me that I likely had a genetic vulnerability to thyroid disease, that very likely the mono (Epstein-Barr) had triggered antibodies to attack my thyroid, and that my metabolism and endocrine system had been compromised, resulting in the hell I had been going through. A simple but thorough exam led to me understand that no one had properly examined my thyroid, ever, that the simple reflex test he did would suggest hyper or hypothyroidism, and that the blood tests he would order were ranges he would use along with my symptoms to treat my disease. He is extremely well informed and most importantly, listens. I highly recommend him." (October 2006)

Another fan:
"Dr. Becker works magic. I was on thyroid medication for 8 years, complaining I was still exhausted. I was misdiagnosed repeatedly with everything from Epstein Barr (liver out of whack is thyroid problem) to GERD (digestive tract was off, to rosacea (I was allergic to the Synthroid I took) and anemia (I took iron and ultimately couldn't drink water without pain because the iron was ripping apart my insides) ~ I went to 3 doctors, including those at Stanford who were dismally incompetent and dismissive. Knowing I have a history of severe thyroid disease in my family should have been a clue. The best anyone could muster was my numbers looked great....except my antibodies were 150X what they should have been and I was always dead tired. Dr. Becker is a walking encyclopedia of thyroid knowledge; he blends science with his genuine concern about how you feel and works magic. I bow to his expertise and am more thankful than words could ever express for his continuing help and guidance...my family is pretty happy too....."(August 2007)

Another reader writes:
"I credit this doctor with saving my life, without exaggeration. I was suffering from debilitating depression, fatigue, memory fog, and was not getting better under the care of a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist referred me to a therapist. The therapist, bless his heart, listened to my symptoms, ordered some bloodwork, and referred me to Dr. Becker. Dr. Becker finally gave me answers and explanations, as well as treatment. Hashimoto's thyroiditis, PCOS, Diabetes type 2, and Epstein barr... six years later, I am happy, healthy, no longer suicidal or in a fog, and I thank Dr. Becker for his unique ability to merge medical knowledge and skill with compassion and intuition. Highly recommend!" (July 2008)

Dr. Orlo Clark, endocrine surgeon thyroid cancer, UCSF Medical Center, 1400 Divisadero San Francisco CA, 415-476-1413, 415-476-6640, "Busy practice -- you may not see if for a few months but he's worth the wait. Usually his waiting room is filled with patients from across the country and the world. "I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer and Dr. Orlo Clark was my surgeon who performed a total thyroidectomy. . he is a skilled surgeon and highly regarded by the medical community i n the SF Bay Area. He also teaches for UCSF Medical School and is progressive with the latest technology and skills in his field. Prior to choosing a surgeon we conducted numerous research and interviews for a good endocrine surgeon and Dr. Clark consistently came up. He has also performed total thyroidectomies on several of my friends and am grateful to have had him as a surgeon. Additionally he is affiliated with a group of gifted endocrine surgeons and endocrinologists in his practice who will be monitoring my health for the rest of my life. I encourage you to do research on Dr. Orlo Clark on the web. .he's been published for his works and has was president for the American Thyroid Association. He's not only talented but has a great sense of humor and an excellent bedside manner. I recommend him HIGHLY."

Another supporter:
A reader writes: "I just want to recommend A VERY GOOD surgeon for any type of thyroid problem. His name is DR. Orlo Clark. He is the best. My sister had a tumor on her thyroid and she had a total thyroidectomy. She had the operation at Mt. Zion hospital in San Francisco. She is doing very well after 2 1/2 hour surgery to remove 9 cm tumor."

Dr. Quan-Yang Duh, Endocrine surgeon, UCSF Medical Center, 400 Parnassus - 6th floor San Francisco, CA 94115 415-353-2161 Dr. Duh was recommended, following a 3rd opinion that I was getting from UCSF. Coming from a small community in the foothills of the Mother Lode of California, I felt it was necessary to get a number of opinions about the thyroid nodule that I had. The UCSF staff seemed thorough and complete in their review of my case. At this point they suggested Dr. Duh as the best fit for my personality (more than a little anxious, very well prepared with lots of questions, and demanding of the best care possible). On the off chance I might get an appointment the same day (this seemed very unlikely) we went to the Department of Surgery and were told we could be seen if we were willing to wait. The first thing that convinced me that Dr. Duh cared for patients was the fact that the staff said they had been directed to find time for patients who had traveled long distances to get a consult. Dr. Duh spent 30 minutes answering all of our questions and set up a surgery date (he had to work a bit to make it happen as quickly as we wished). He then said that anytime I had a question to be sure and call and he would try to answer it. On the pre-op visit I had a question no one could answer, so Dr. Duh was paged and spoke with me for about 10 minutes on the phone until I was satisfied. I was most impressed with how he completely and carefully listed to my concerns and questions. He then gave careful, thoughtful and sensitive answers, even though I suspect he has heard the same questions countless times before. Following my surgery, he even made a special trip by my room to speak with my wife because there had been a problem with seeing her earlier. He was very encouraging, knowledgeable, and most importantly, took my need for information and support very seriously. The surgery seemed to go flawlessly and my recovery was very rapid. Besides being Department Chair, Dr. Duh has published at least three books, as well as numerous (70+) articles and assorted other written works. I hope this information will help anyone out there who is trying to find a well-qualified and caring surgeon.

Another supporter for Dr. Duh
He is known internationally and is in surgery 4 days a week!! He's done extensive research written papers and is on the cutting edge of technology. I live in Reno Nevada and he calls me on the phone!!! Unbelievable man. He's one in a million. Instead of opting to remove my thyroid which is always an easy fix with a nodule we are watching it. Much rather do that than let someone remove it!! I used to employ two-way radio technicians there were those that would remove the whole board and replace it and the ones that knew what they were doing would only remove what was necessary!! Contact him, he is the best period.

More praise from a reader for Dr. Duh:
"Dr. Duh performed surgery on me in 1996 and removed a large multi nodular goiter from my chest without having to crack the sternum. He is gifted, kind, and listens to all your concerns. Recently, I had some suspicious lymph nodes show up in my neck and I faxed the ultra sound report to his office. He called me that night to talk about the report! I now live 500 miles away but if I need surgery again, I will go to him. He is completely open and has no "stuff" about how one looks, or sexual orientation or anything; he just loves what he does and wants to help." (added 1/04)

Another reader recommends Dr. Duh:
"My mom was diagnosed with a goiter. It was growing down into her chest cavity, which was resulting in a shortness of breath. I found this website and after reading a lot of the testimonials on this site, I knew Dr. Duh was the doctor she needed to see. My parents are uninsured, but this was no problem. Dr. Duh was kind, professional, and really knows what he is doing. I would highly recommend Dr. Duh and the University of California-San Francisco to anyone who needs endocrine surgery." George Kimmerling, Thyroid, 3838 California Street Suite 108, San Francisco, CA, 415-221-7282. "Dr Kimmerling is very serious about his patient and finding the right medication for their thyroid problem. He could brush up on his bed side manner, but that is just how committed he is. Even though it is to your advantage to keep your appt, he also comes after you to make sure you keep scheduled time. He is really good and the Hospital he works out of is even better (California Pacific Hospital in San Francisco, CA."

Another reader recommends Dr. Kimmerling:
I agree...Dr. Kimmerling was the only doctor to discover my probably lifelong thyroid problem. Even my physician who is a Harvard Graduate didn't discover it (but he's not a Thyroid specialist). Dr. Kimmerling FOUND the reason why I wasn't losing weight, feeling lethargic and even though my TSH level wasn't 10, it was slight enough to make my symptoms real and cause problems. So I feel like I actually have a new lease on life...and I believe if you tell him straight out what you think the problem is, he'll give you his professional medical opinion and be supportive. Fifteen years ago I was diagnosed with thyroid eye disease as a result of my Graves' Disease. He is a masterful surgeon. If you are going for thyroid surgery, he is the doctor to choose. I chose him because he works at UCSF and does many thyroid surgeries each week. And if there is a chance my vocal chords could be damaged, I wanted someone with a lot of experience. Since my surgeries, I have had many doctors ask me who did my surgery; as apparently as far as scares go, mine is a masterpiece. You can hardly see it now, and I had the surgeries 8 months ago. Dr. Kebebew has many patients, you may wait awhile to see him, but he is worth the wait. He does not believe that he knows everything, and will refer you (after doing all he can, with no resolve) to another specialist, when necessary. Dr Ng is very highly regarded among his colleagues. "You are in very good hands...", "Excellent doctor..." are among the many compliments I’ve heard other physicians say when mentioning Dr. Ng."

(NOTE: Dr. Shames has moved to San Rafael, California from Florida in late Spring 2002). A reader shares, "Dr. Shames is an M.D. trained at Harvard and The University of Pennsylvania. In addition to traditional medical experience he was director of the Holistic Health and Nutrition Institute in Mill Valley where conventional medicine was blended with natural remedies. Dr. Shames is a very observant listener with plenty of time for patients. He allows the patient to work with him to discover the best plan of action. He is very knowledgeable about Thyroid conditions. He is the author of two books, Healing with Mind Power and The Gift of Health. He and his wife are co-authoring a new book, The Thyroid Epidemic. In six months Dr. Shames has done more for me than all the doctors put together in the last 9 years of trying to get my thyroid condition under control."

Another reader likes Dr. Shames:
Dr. Shames has an especially caring and very personal approach. He spends from 45 to 90 minutes talking with patients about their symptoms. He allows the patient to have input into decision making and most importantly, he truly listens. Dr. Shames is very knowledgeable and understands thyroid issues."

Another patient writes:
"FINALLY....someone who will listen. I have been to so many doctors (I have lost count) and Dr. Shames is the FIRST one to understand! Without a doubt, his knowledge of thyroid imbalance is heads above anyone else!"

Another reader writes:
"Thanks to this site, I found Dr. Shames. When I first saw Dr. Shames, I was in very bad shape because I had belonged to an HMO and it only believed that its patients needed one type of thyroid medication (synthroid) which was deadly to me. Synthroid caused me to swell up like a balloon. I was trying to exercise but would run short of breath and I was on the verge of being diagnosed with congestive heart failure from all of the water my body was retaining. My doctor at the HMO just kept telling me that I needed to diet and exercise more. I was barely eating anything and I would walk when I wasn't short of breath. I really felt like I was going to die at the ripe old age of 34. Dr. Shames asked me if I would be willing to try Armor or Naturethroid. He explained that both of these medications contained natural T3 and he believed that my body likely needed that. I tried Armor, and I need a large dosage to keep going, but Dr. Shames has been willing to work with me on what my body needs. I am now 42 and much healthier than I was at 34. Dr. Shames saved my life!" (May 2008)

After seeing various doctors in my hometown over the course of 2 years, I was still feeling terrible without getting any answers as to why. I went to see Dr. Donner with hopes that he could give me some answers. Did he ever!! After feeing my throat for all of three seconds, he told me that my thyroid was enlarged and that he felt a nodule. We sat and talked about my family history and discussed my symptoms. He ordered an ultrasound that same day and detected a tumor in my thyroid behind the nodule. I thank God for him and his skilled hands. My tumor was cancerous and without his diagnosis, it would not have been found. He discussed my options with me and referred me to a fantastic surgeon. I highly recommend Dr. Donner to anyone who needs a skilled and knowledgeable endocrinologist." (Added 10/05)

I chose not to have half of my thyroid removed and Dr. Donner has monitored my nodule and thyroid ever since. Dr. Elena did a very thorough intake and I filled out lots of forms about my health history and mood. She had blood tests done and saw that my T3 levels were very low along with low T4 levels. No one had ever even run the T3 levels on me before! She is very intelligent, caring, holistically oriented and knows more than anyone else I have ever come in contact with about health! She is easy to talk to, spends plenty of time with you and is available via email if any questions or concerns come up in between appointments. I am so glad I have found her! I highly recommend her! Dr. Elena also works with people over the telephone who may not live near her office (she did this with a friend of mine). I did not want to take Armour (I am Jewish and don't do porcine) and although she does suggest Armour as well as Synthroid, Cytomel, herbs and supplements, she suggested Synthroid and Cytomel (for the T4 and T3 I needed) for me. It worked and is still working like a charm and I feel fabulous...like my former, very much younger, and enthusiastic self" Dr. Elena has truly been an angel in my life!" I really feel like she has helped me so much! So hopefully others can find her and get the help they need." (March 2009)

He’s medically sound and open to the latest information, i.e., currently working with me using Long Acting T3 - iothyronine."

A reader writes:
"Dr Gordon is a top doc in my opinion because he has made me feel so much better than any of my former doctors, and there have been a few, including a leading "expert" in the thyroid at UCSF Medical Center. Doctor Gordon's treatment choices have relieved many symptoms that were plaguing me for years. He uses his hands and his head to go beyond the conventional approaches that just weren't working for me. He has added T3 to my medication and it has made a great difference. He has stopped a chronic headache with osteo manipulation, too. I wholeheartedly and with out reservation, recommend him to anyone with thyroid
issues, especially." (Added: June 2004)

A reader writes:
"Has a holistic approach to thyroid. Prescribed sustained release T3 and Cortef, helping me to feel much better, as well as seeking out the root cause of my thyroid dysfunction. One of the smartest and nicest doctors around. I can't recommend him highly enough. Doesn't take insurance; his office gives you a superbill to submit to your PPO." (Added Apr 06)

"Dr. Ross McDougall is a great endocrinologist; he not only takes time to hear all my concerns about my treatment and is never defensive about my questions, but also involves me in my own path to wellness. He is up to date with the research about thyroid disorders and considers more than one aspect in treatment. To add to all these great qualities, he also has a great sense of humor." (added 1/04)

A reader writes:
""I’ve been with Dr. McDougall for over 11 years and he has kept me cancer-free. He listens to what is wrong and is honest with you about your prognosis, diagnosis, and what he feels is truly best for your situation. I’ve been cancer-free for over 11 years without radiation or chemotherapy. I live a normal healthy life on thyroid supplement and am thankful to have an honest and caring doctor." (Added 4/04)

Another reader writes:
"I drive 3 hours to see Dr. McDougall. He is very knowledgeable, kind and listens. He sees alot of pts. with Thyroid Cancer and is upbeat."

A reader writes:
"I cannot begin to voice my everlasting thanks to "my doc of all docs" Dr. Ross Mcdougall. I can honestly state that if not for him and the unbelievable staff at Stanfords thyroid clinic I would not be writing this today! I have been seeing Dr. Mac (& fab Julie at the front desk) for the last 25 years!!!!! Yes, 25 years! I had my thyroid removed the summer of 1983, at the age of 10 years old due to cancer. That had been previously undiagnosed until the June morning that I was put under for what was explained to my mother as routine "exploratory" surgery. I had been to a half a dozen other or more specialists and doctors thruout the Bay area, even enduring a needle biopsy that produced no clear results as to what was wrong with me. After my surgery I was sent to the clinic at Stanford hospital and began my life long relationship with Dr. Mac and Julie (who I believe began working for him on or about only my second visit) I was only ten years old at the time. I am now expecting my 36th birthday this coming May, and I truly don't believe that I could ever say this without the care I received from Dr. Mac. I can best describe him as a very matter-of-fact, direct, caring doctor. Who's only concern at the time of my visits (way too many to count anymore) was me and my over all health and well being. He always took the time to ask about all aspects of my life. Showing true concern for my over all physical health, including mental and emotional well being - states which all connect to your thyroid health. Not just concerned with the numbers of what my blood work tests showed. As I grew older and no longer visited with my mother. He always asked of her and a sister as well with other thyroid related health issues. Even though they even not patients of his, sending regards. Julie in his front office hasn't changed in the past 25 years. Her smiling face behind that desk at each and every visit, was the most warming and comforting site to me as a small child. I will never be able to show my unbelievable gratitude to both of them. Dr. Mac & Stanford hospital saved my life. Thank you for each and everyday you have gifted to me." (March 2009)

Note: This doctor can be quite expensive, and recommended supplement protocols may also be costly. Discuss the costs and any financial constraints you have when making your appointment.

Areas of practice: thyroid optimization with T4/T3 and straight T3 preparations. Treats all types of hypothyroidism, including standard (primary), secondary (pituitary dysfunction), tertiary (hypothalamic), which result in normal or low TSH with sub-optimal T4 and T3 levels, low T3 syndromes, poor conversion of T4 to T3, high reverse T3 (Wilson's syndrome), thyroid receptor resistance syndromes, which results in hypothyroidism with normal thyroid blood levels, difficult thyroid cases, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia. Also treats all other hormonal deficiencies including adrenal, testosterone, estrogen, progesterone, HGH, and natural pharmaceutical compounded medications.

A reader recommends Dr. Holtorf:
"Dr. Holtorf was able to improve my thyroid condition even though I had already been treated for this condition for 20+ years. Dr. Holtorf was able to treat my under treated thyroid problem and I have never felt better. He is familiar with how my hormones interact with one another and was able to tell more about me medically than anyone else has. If I experience a problem that he is not familiar with, he actually conducts research and gets back to me with alternate ways to treat me. This man is a blessing, and I highly recommend him to anyone in the area or willing to fly to see him. I did - I live on the east coast but I flew in just to see him based upon other recommendations - it was totally worth it. I am now feeling like I haven't felt since before my pregnancies in the 1970's!" (added 1/04)

Another reader writes:
"Dr. Holtorf looks beyond the typical thyroid bloodwork. He focuses on your symptoms and looks for other causes that can contribute to thyroid problems. Dr. Holtorf's treatment has made a huge difference in the way I feel. He does not accept insurance but every penny I have paid to this doctor is worth it. I have so much more energy and even though I'm still on the road to recovery, for the first time in many years I feel very confident that I will be there soon." (Added: June 2004)

Dr. Cindy Williams, Endocrinologist, South Bay Endocrine Assoc., 20911 Earl Street, Suite 460 Torrance, CA 90503 (310) 542-6333.

Note: This doctor charges $350 to $450 for an initial visit, and reportedly does not accept any forms of insurance. (March 2009)

"I have only been to see Dr. Williams three times, but I feel great every time I leave her office. She validates my feelings with her sympathetic ear and spends extra time with me if I have questions. She takes my symptoms seriously and explains why my body is doing certain things. She is also open to suggestions and treats me like an intelligent human being. I cannot speak highly enough of her.

.Another reader writes:
"I see that someone has already listed this "TOP of the TOP DOCS", however, I think she should be listed twice! She is everything the first person who listed her has said and more! She is extremely intelligent, perceptive, informed, curious, receptive, interested and has the unique ability to be herself as she practices this art which she clearly loves. I have searched for over 20 years for a physician such as she, and am glad to be hypothyroid!"

Another fan:
"Dr. Williams is remarkable. She LISTENS & she sympathizes. She's not just a "numbers" doctor; she takes the patient's symptom profile into account. I had seen an associate of another physician listed on this board and was very disappointed; Dr. Williams cleared up my confusion. PLEASE be sure to check w/your state's medical board to see if the doctor you're considering is Board Certified, and if so, in what. It's NOT essential, but it helps to know. Also, for most of us, insurance IS a concern; if your physician won't accept your insurance, it may be because they won't cover the services. These are important considerations IMO. Also, there are a # of "alternative" treatments in general medicine today; it's worth it to research the efficacy & safety of these options before paying for them. " (Added: Dec. 04)

A reader writes: "At 30, I had suffered from Hypothyroidism for 20 years. My test results were uncontrollable, I was told I was my specialists worst patient, and after taking 300mcg of thyroxin a day with no result, I found Dr. Cho. I have been completely OFF thyroid meds for one year, have lost weight (a first) and no longer test positive for Hashimoto's (my anti-thyroid peroxidase levels were over 800). Dr. Cho is kind, generous, and most important listens. She customizes a plan for each patient, and every time I leave her office I feel better and better. At the beginning of my treatment, she assured my that the body had the ability to heal itself, and I believe she has proven that true. Her unique treatment of me , as well as several family members and friends makes her my top choice in the treatment of any illness." (Added Apr 06)

A reader writes: "My thyroid symptoms started in Oct 2003, but were not diagnosed until Oct 2005. I was given Synthroid, but did not feel better. I was still sick all the time, exhausted and in pain. I quit my job and could hardly get out of bed, but could not sleep. I felt like the walking dead and was treated like a crazy hypochondriac. I saw at least 20 doctors in four years and was completely under, over and incorrectly diagnosed with several conditions and none at all. I found Holtorf Medical in Feb 2008 and they have been a lifesaver. They believed me when I said I didn't feel well and ran the medical tests to find out why. They prescribed the right combination of compound thyroid, hormonal and nutritional supplements. It's been less than six months and I already feel better. They are a bit on the expensive side and insurance only covers a small amount." (July 2008)

A reader writes:
"Dr. Leigh Erin Connealy has a very large practice comprising of medical doctors and nurse practitioners, technicians and a nutritionist. Her practice is incredible. They treat patients every day with minor to very serious illnesses and take a traditional and whole body approach to illness. The staff is great and they will move mountains to make sure a patient is informed and well treated. They have alot of expertise in thyroid and use Armour thyroid, a natural thyroid to balance the body. Dr. Connealy and her staff really listen to patients." (Added Apr 06)

A reader writes:
"I would like to recommend Dr. Allan Lane. I found Dr. Lane about four years ago and his treatments have made a big difference in my life. He is an internist who practices preventive and traditional medicine using many alternative therapies, natural hormones and Armour thyroid. He is very knowledgeable and thorough and makes sure I understand everything. I feel so much better now, even my friends have commented on how much better I look." (1/04)

Another fan:
"This is a very caring and knowledgeable physician. I highly recommend Dr. Lane. He has helped me tremendously. I had uncontrollable asthma, was suffering during menopause (hot flashes, night sweats, depression), have a hypothyroid condition (including weight gain) and have had insomnia for 27 years. My regular physician had me on so many prescriptions for my asthma (up to 6 at one time) and I just kept getting sicker and sicker. They also would not put me on HRT but wanted me on Zoloft instead. Since I've been treated by Dr. Lane, I'm off of all my asthma meds except for my emergency inhaler, am on bioidentical HRT and thyroid medication and feel great, better than I have for a long time, and I have shed all the weight I had gained in the past few years! The only complaint left to conquer is my insomnia and he will begin working with me on that in the coming months. I have so much faith in him, I believe he will find a solution that no one else has." A reader writes:
"Dr. Jew took over Dr. Robert Dreibelbis' practice in Tustin, CA. Dr. Jew is located in the same office that Dr. Dreibelbis was located in. Dr. Jew is very much like Dr. Dreibelbis in that he takes the time to sit down and listen to his patients. He is very knowledgeable about thyroid diseases and has studied the works of Dr. Broda Barnes who I believe is credited with being the first doctor to endorse the use of Armour Thyroid and say that patients need T3 as well as T4. Dr. Jew will prescribe Armour Thyroid. He also is very concerned about a patient's symptoms and has a check list of symptoms that the patient checks off to help Dr. Jew monitor progress with Armour Thyroid treatment. He is a wonderful doctor, kind, caring and he takes time to listen and speak with his patients. He actually sat down with me on my last appointment and spent a full 20 minutes with me educating me on Hashimoto's Thyroidtitis and listened to my concerns and needs. I highly recommend Dr. Jew and give him four out of four stars!" (March 2009)

Ukiah

Donald L. Coursey M.D., Ears, Nose & Throat, 1165 S. Dora St., Ukiah, CA 95482, 707-462-8855. A reader writes: "He has taken care of me for a number of years for problems with my Parotid Glands, (which where also hard to diagnosis), both of which he had to remove for me. I was in for a yearly check-up when he asked me about a lump in my throat. I told him that other doctors said it was nothing to worry about. He wanted to know if he had missed it or if it was new. I told him it was about a year old, but had appeared after my last visit with him. He decided to do an Ultrasound, & then a biopsy and found it was cancer. He removed it along with my thyroid which also contained cancer cells. He sent me to San Francisco to a specialist for more extensive tests to make sure that all of the cancer was removed. He monitors my meds & I feel great as long as no one else tries to mess with my dosage. He had done 5 surgeries on my throat and none of the scars are visible. He uses me as an example to other patients. Has also used my case history to do a talk at a drs. convention. My GP was there and quite embarrassed when she found that she knew nothing of my problems. I changed my GP a few months later, am using a doctor that is also listed on your page, Dr. Wedderburn, & I agree she is great, but have stayed with Dr. Coursey for my throat, even though he is a busy doctor all I have to do is call & he fits me in quickly. " (June 2006).

A reader writes:
Seeing Dr. Sevilla after many attempts to find a good doctor has been like a breath of fresh air. I finally found a doctor who is not bound to test numbers but how I feel. She is smart, informed, and logical in her decision making and shows a genuine interest in my health. She is not patronizing and makes me feel like I am in charge of my treatment plan." (March 2009)

Ventura

Martha Gonzalez, Endocrinology/Women's Health Martha Gonzalez, M.D., MPH 116 North Brent Street, Ventura, CA 93003 805-656-4311 A reader writes: "She is well versed in reading between the lines when tests results are one thing and how you feel is another. She also took time to do reflex testing as well as asking many questions."

Another reader writes:
She is awesome. I have had a thyroid problem for 20 years now. All the other doctors I've been to have said it's enlarged but working normally. My first visit to Dr. Gonzales, she put me on the meds I needed immediately and less than a week later, I feel like a new person. She recognized all my symptoms immediately and showed genuine concern."

Another reader recommends Dr. Gonzalez:
"Dr. Martha Gonzalez is a top doc because she cares. She is truly in the business of healing peoples ills. She wants to help you feel better in the best way for you. Using a treatment you will feel comfortable with. Two and one half years I have been looking for answers to my symptoms. I don't even want to begin to tell you the frustration and self-doubt I have been through with many physicians and specialist. Dr. Gonzalez took one look at a test done in September of 2001 and knew I had Hashimoto's Disease. She put me on meds immediately. She takes the time to answer any questions you may have. She explains herself, the disease, the treatment in detail because she wants you to be informed. I feel I can trust her judgment and if I have questions she will talk to you about my doubts. At last, a health professional I can trust to listen to me and give me meds that I need. If I got one more box of Viox I was going to have a real anxiety attack." (Added 2/03)

A reader writes:
"I had a thyroidectomy in 1992, since then I have had a lot of doctors (changing medical groups, moving, etc.). There have only been two thyroid doctors worth their weight in gold. Dr. Martha Gonzalez in Ventura and Dr. Boris Catz in Beverly Hills. Dr. Gonzales is my current doctor. I have what I would call a resistance to synthroid. Only Armour thyroid in large doses works on me. I have had MDs all over switch me back and forth to synthroid, even when I begged them not to. Sure enough, I would go into a deep depression and feel horrible from head to toe. Dr. Gonzales listened to me. Now I feel great again. There can never be enough said about a doctor who listens and is willing to try and make you feel better - even if that is not what the "norm" would agree to." (Added: Dec. 04)

Another reader recommends Dr. Gonzalez:
"Not only is Dr. Gonzalez a great listener and warm and caring, but she really knows her stuff! Unlike a lot of endocrinologists, she only does thyroid disease and hormone replacement for women. Dr. Gonzalez has advanced training in nutrition and public health and likes to put her patients on vitamins. The ones she prescribed for me really help me. She likes synthroid, but is willing to prescribe other medications including natural thyroxine for those who want it." (Added 10/05)

Another recommendation:
"Dr. Gonzales is simply the best. I had suspected I had hypothyroidism for years, but all the doctors I went to stated that I didn't. I saw Dr. Gonzales and she took the time to talk with me about my symptoms and did extensive lab work. Turns out I was hypothyroid after all. I have seen her for 5 years. I moved about 2 hours away from her location a few years ago, but I still travel to Ventura to see her. I am currently pregnant, and she is the ONLY person I would trust with regulating my meds during my pregnancy. She is warm and kind and I always feel supported and listened to. She is simply the best." (Added 1/06)

Even though Madhuri and I live in different states, she was able to order blood work and do phone consultations and get me on the road to better health. Not only has she helped tremendously with my thyroid treatment, she was able to diagnose hormone problems I was having as well and recommended wonderful supplements and progesterone cream to help get my body balanced out. She has been conscientious in her exams, thorough in explaining the pros and cons of the available treatments, and respectful in helping me decide which treatment is best for ME. She is also very nice and a good listener." (Added 4/04).

I went to Dr. Cohen after multiple consults with physicians in Los Angeles and San Diego for my thyroid nodule. The FNA was suspicious so I was recommended to have a hemithyroidectomy to make sure it's not cancerous. From consultation to surgery and aftercare, Dr. Cohen was second to none. He spent a great deal of time explaining the surgery and the possible risks. Surgery went great and he is one of only 3 surgeons in California that I know who does Minimally Invasive Thyroidectomy. I stayed overnight and went home the next morning with minimal pain and a normal voice. I cannot say enough about Dr. Cohen, he is truly the best and most caring surgeon I've ever met!" (March 2009)

"I am writing to tell everyone that there are doctors who still actually listen to you problems. I met the best doctor in years finally was able to help me after years of suffering with all the symptoms of my thyroid problems.
