Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?
Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.
* The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
* The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
* The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
* Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.
* Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.

I have tried to find a doctor for over 20 years who could treat me for thyroid problems. This doctor
works with you and stays with you communicating frequently. She has done so much for my condition.
I highly recommend this doctor.
A reader writes:
"I recommend Dr. Lowe highly! After reading some of Dr. Lowe's writing and
reading the website he has with his wife and partner, Dr. Gina Lowe, I decided to try a phone
consultation. I typed a short, one-page medical history and faxed it along with my latest blood test results.
It was easy to set us a phone consultation appointment within a week of calling. I spoke with Dr.
Lowe for almost an hour. He shared as much information with me as he could during this period. It was
the most informative time I have ever spent with a medical doctor so far. I generated four pages of notes
that I have referred back to several times." (Added Dec. 04)
A patient writes:
I came from PA to Boulder to see them and they far exceeded my expectations. They spend time , listen, utilize
tests that the majority of Drs. don't. I can't say enough about them! When I arrived I had pain and every
other symptom from Fibromyalgia. They were so compassionate. Within a couple of months after that
visit, via phone, we had transformed my condition from 95% pain and lethargy to 10% if that. They are
not afraid to think outside of the box. Kudos to these doctors! They are worth every penny to travel to
see." (Added: Dec. 04)

"Dr. John O'Hearne's presence and practice in Boulder is one of the great blessings and serendipitous
events in my life. My wife and I moved to Colorado in 1991, from the New York City area, where Dr.
O'Hearne was our physician at the East-West Medical Institute. Under his care, we had never felt
healthier or happier with the overall scope of our health care." (Added: Dec. 04)
A patient writes:
O'Hearne is a caring , interested Doctor. Interested in every aspect of your health, not just the problem
at hand. I was introduced to Dr. O'Hearne through Drs. Honeyman-Lowe & Dr. John C. Lowe so we
could coordinate my treatment for Fibromyalgia. He has been amazing to work with! Open minded and
caring and available by phone. I live in PA and sought treatment in Boulder because I had read about
these Doctors. Dr. O'Hearne is the first medical doctor that actually listened to me. Thanks to him I am
feeling great and as I said I do have Fibromyalgia! Thanks Dr. O'Hearne for your compassion." (Added:
"I have been seeing Dr. O'hearne about my thyroid problems and other medical issues and he is the best doctor that I've ever seen about this. He is concerned about me as a whole person. Before my other doctor would just test my blood, say my thyroid levels were 'ok' with the medicine she prescribed and we wouldn't talk again until my next yearly appointment. The doctor's office writes:
"What makes Pierre such a great doctor is that: 1.) He approaches medicine as a scientist, 2.) He listens, 3.) He genuinely cares about his patients, 4.) He is constantly learning, including learning from his patients, 5.) He makes clinical judgments based on experience and knowledge, rather than dogma. Unlike so many (most?) doctors who practice medicine mainly as a way to make a living, medicine and healing are his life's work. As well as being a Board Certified Family Practice Physician and associate clinical professor at the University of Colorado, Pierre is a formally trained homeopath and acupuncturist, and he trained with Dr. Alan R. Gaby regarding nutritional IVs, often called Myer's Cocktails. In fact, Pierre is one of only about three medical doctors in Colorado who routinely prescribe and administer nutritional IVs. Needless to say, Pierre treats his patients from a whole-person perspective and utilizes multiple diagnostic healing modalities as appropriate. Pierre is a healer who makes experienced clinical judgments based on signs (observable conditions), symptoms (what the patient reports), and test results. Oh, and Pierre is also very knowledgeable and capable regarding treatment of adrenal and thyroid problems with a variety of medications (including Armour, of course), utilizing a wide variety of tests and clinical observations, and focusing on whether a patient is actually getting well." A reader writes: "
I had 3 miscarriages before being diagnosed with Graves Disease, I was told to see this Dr. that she

80124, 303-706-9192 http://blueridge4myhealth.com
A reader writes: "Saari is great because he takes the new blood tests (not just TSH) and will prescribe not only natural thyroid, but also compounded thyroid for more exact dosages. Also, he considers the seasons (winter vs summer) when prescribing. He listens well and will recommend naturopathic practitioners if you need it. He even said I should work on a Candida diet. He also knows about PCOS." (Added Dec. 2006)
A reader writes:
"Dr. Jacques Saari is a great doctor. He is progressive, thorough and practices cutting edge medicine. He also knows the other doctors in the Denver area who are ahead of the curve. He has helped me get to the bottom of some long term health issues, including thyroid. I've been on Levothyroxine and he discovered I was ot converting it to T3." (March 2009)
Sherrie Somers, General practice/internist/primary care, Osteopath/DO, 14000 East Arapahoe Rd., Centennial, Co 80112, 303-617-7782
"I was worried that I might be getting Alzheimers at an early age and I had some other health issues. Dr. Somers listened to me and tested my TSH. The result was 4.8 I know that most doctors don't worry until the levels are above 5 or 6. Dr. Somers though was current on the latest information and had further test done that showed I had Hashimoto. Having been raised by a mother who is a nurse, I immediately started researching all the material I could find on the subject. At my next appointment, I arrived with a pile of books and a list of questions. Dr. Somers listened to my concerns and also stated that she was glad to see that I was reading up on the condition. I was happy to find that she was up on all the latest information that I had been reading about in books such as Thyroid Power. She was very supportive when I asked if I could take Armor instead of Synthroid. Dr. Somers is an excellent doctor." (May 2008)

on. He let me pick what I wanted to do. He prescribes T4 and T3 combo drugs and he also prescribes
Another reader writes:
"He listens to you, believes you and takes your symptoms seriously. Knowledgeably prescribes T4 and
T3 . Finally someone who respected how one can suffer with hypo symptoms. Well worth the trip from
the Denver area. The office visit and the treatments prescribed were affordable." (Added 11/02)
A reader writes:
"I had gone unsuccessfully from doctor to doctor for 15 years suffering from depression and chronic
fatigue syndrome which was resulting in large part from low thyroid levels. Dr. Juetersonke is on the
forefront of modern medicine and worked with me to come up with solutions to my problems. He also
prescribed both T4 and T3 to control my thyroid levels. I have been seeing him for two years now and
feel better than I have in 20 years!" (Added 10/05)
"Dr. J saved my life - literally. I am here 16 years later because of him. When panic attacks and other bizarre symptoms took over my life unexpectedly, I must have seen over a dozen MDs and more than 10 psychiatrists - no one could resolve my symptoms and they had me so drugged up I couldn't function. I just wanted to die. Finally, one psychiatrist asked me how much of my symptoms did I feel were mental or physical - I told her that I KNEW it was physical - she immediately sent me to Dr. J. Over a period of time, and through different trials and tribulations of medicine - he helped me to regain my life back. He was always there - 24x7. Some thyroid symptoms are very scary - but when you have a doctor in the wings that is willing to get you through it - it is priceless. I owe this man - 10 fold." (Added Dec. 2006)
"Dr. Juetersonke is very knowledgeable about treating hypothyroidism. He cares about how you feel rather than just your TSH levels. And he will prescribe Armor, if you choose it." (Added October 2007)
Another reader writes:
"I just wanted to add my words of praise for this doctor. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's over 5 years ago and no one would listen to me about my continuing thyroid issues and symptoms while just taking Synthroid. Dr. J. took ONE LOOK at me at our initial visit and said, you have thyroid disease and polycystic ovarian syndrome. People with PCOS cannot metabolize the necessary T3 from Synthroid alone. He put me on a split dose of Cytomel and Synthroid, and I am now able to lose weight AND all my symptoms are gone. I also see his nurse practitioner for my PCOS issues, and everyone in that office is fabulous. I could not give any doctors a higher recommendation." (Added October 2007)
"Dr. J treats you like a human being and listens to your symptoms and treats them vs. looking at you as a lab value. He shared the results of a study that was completed in 2006 proving that women who have been on Birth Control for long periods of time lose testosterone. He has recommended testosterone therapy for me and though I just started the program; I am confident that he will help me find the right answer eventually. Highly Recommended!" (Added October 2007)

Dr. Joel Klein, 620 South Cascade, Ste C, Colorado Springs, CO, 80903 (719) 457-0330
A reader writes:
"For 20 years my wife and I have fought General Practioners and Endocrinologists over her hypothyroidism. We finally were able to get Armor and she felt better... then the fight was to get enough. One General Practicioner did prescribe enough, then moved his practice from our area. Then the next Doctor cut her dosage in half. This yo-yo type of approach went on for several years. We finally did our own research, was able to obtain armor through mail order and she started taking adrenalin supplement, and began feeling better. Through a very fortunate series of events, a close friend recommended we visit Dr. Klein who owns the Klein Center for Holistic Medicine in Colorado Springs. After only two visits both my wife and I were amazed at how much better she felt. By better balancing the T-4 and T-3 and"customizing" the amount of T-3 by using a compounding pharmacy, and by addressing other issues related to the hypothyroidism, Dr. Klein, who actually worked with us , is achieving the right levels of thyroid hormone that my wife needs... not based on a blood test, but based on how she feels. The amount of T-3 has actually been reduced, but by addressing all of the issues, my wife has felt better than she has in twenty years. In fact, I had to go to Dr. Klein myself to get energy the natural way to keep up with my wife. It's great!!! We very highly recommend Dr. Klein and his approach to dealing with thyroid issues." A reader writes in to tell us that there is a chronic fatigue syndrome clinic
at the National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Illness. The doctor who specializes in the
chronic fatigue is Dr. Jim Jones. He also deals with patients with fibromyalgia, as do some of the other
physicians on the team. Their specialty is not endocrinology per se, but given that they specialize in
autoimmune diseases of various sorts, they also see people with Graves and Hashimoto's, given they are
also autoimmune. They can refer to other endocrinologists in the Denver area.
"I went to Dr. Howard Kerstein 4545 East 9th 320-2888, he was
wonderful!!! I had eye surgery done by Dr. Eugene Wiggs 2005 Franklin St 863-0011."
Another reader recommends Dr. Kerstein:

Creek N. Dr, #322, Denver, CO 80209, 303-394-2888. A reader writes: "My other doctor only ever
checked my TSH and said she was "at a loss" when I didn't feel better after months of Synthroid. Dr.
Kerstein listened very well and suggested we try adding T3 since I have not felt better on T4 alone. He
said it was up to me whether I wanted to add Cytomel to my Synthroid or go with Armour, explaining
the pros and cons. Dr. Kerstein ordered a bunch of tests to find out the cause. He seems a very kind and
competent person." (Added 4/03)
Rarely can a patient locate a doctor that will give you a personal call with any xray or blood test results.
Dr Kerstein is a genuine exception. He will listen to you and work with you. He cares about his patients,
plain and simple. If necessary he will prescribe T3 which is a rarity in its self. Great Doc and I
recommend him to anyone that is looking for answers to a better lifestyle. (Added 1/06)

Suite 310, Denver, CO 80220, 303-388-4673.
Note: this office does not accept credit card payment. (March 2009)
"Dr. Lifschitz actually listened to my horror stories about
the numerous endocrinologists I have seen. He spent over an hour with me. It was the most thorough
exam I have EVER had for my thyroid disorder. It turns out that I may have an adrenal problem, which
has caused all of the other problems. He actually looked at the type of and location of the fat I have on
my body. After 5 purple tops (test tubes for blood) I felt totally sure that he would not miss anything in
my blood! He called immediately upon receiving my lab results (what a novel concept, I usually call the
Dr. to ask if they have any results yet) to schedule more tests. He is requesting a CAT scan of my
adrenals (first time for that) and an ultrasound of my ovaries. If you have ever wondered where all the
GREAT doctors have gone, the answer is I found one!" (Added 6/02).
A reader writes:
"Everything the previous reader said was true. Dr. Lifschitz did a complete physical
exam, along with taking the time to listen to me & write everything down. After running quite a few xray
& lab tests, he personally called me to tell me the results & answered all of my questions. He also
considers how the patient feels & not just the test result numbers. While I was initially a little unsure of
how this experience would be (the office doesn't have a fax, they insist on a referral even when your
medical plan doesn't require one, & they require documentation of past tests prior to seeing you), it was
well worth the little extra effort it took to get in. This office is truly run on old-fashioned service ethics
& they care about the patient. " (Added: Dec. 04)

Linda Davis Internist Front Range Internal Medicine 499 E Hampden Av
Ste 400 Englewood CO 80110 303- 788-1620 I switched to this doctor when I had a change in insurance
-- she was highly recommended by my cousin who has been a nurse for over 20 years . I had just started
on Synthroid with my previous doctor. Dr Davis answered my questions and changed my dosage slightly
after doing the appropriate tests. I have been on that dosage now for at least two years. When the New
England Journal of Medicine article came out I asked her about it and she said that she would ask the two
endocrinologists she knew and would get back to me. She called a few days later. We discussed what they
had to say about it and decided not to do anything with it for the time being. In August of 2001 I made
an appointment to reevaluate my thyroid its levels. I had lost 70 lbs on a ketosis diet but did not feel any
extra energy and was sleeping erratically. During my appointment we discussed Armour although Dr.
Davis said that she is concerned about the lack of consistency available from this I did not get the feeling
that if I wanted to try it that she would not agree- and we also talked about getting my TSH down into
the 1-2 range my last one was 4.5-. She also asked a lot of questions about my lifestyle -- stress levels.
We discussed a number of choices I would have after the test results came back so when her nurse called
me I knew what was next. In this most recent appointment I asked her how many patients she has seen
with thyroid problems and she said "hundreds". I am recommending her due to her general handling of
all my health care issues. She listened to my thoughts and concerns but also incorporated a larger view
of what might be causing my symptoms as well as temporary and long term solutions for both. Also in
other instances where I needed more immediate care and she was not available I have been seen by three
other doctors at this practice. I received excellent care from each of them as well.

and minerals. So cool to feel like getting of the couch again." (Added 11/02)
"We also had outstanding results with Nicki Carter's attentive care. My mother was so overly medicated with pain pills, sedatives, heart medicines, B.P medicines, all newly prescribed in response to typical symptomatic pharmaceutical treatment of thyroid malfunction. It took almost a year, but Nicki was able to wean mom off of all medications other than her thyroid supplement, of course. Mom is now back to walking, cooking, baking, sewing, living a productive life. I honestly did not think that I would ever see my 85-year old mom walk again let alone achieve such a quality of life. Don't give up. In our case, going to specialists just about killed my mom, and going to a nurse practitioner definitely saved her. Many Thanks, Nicki!" (August 2007)

A reader writes: "I live in Grand Junction, CO, the largest city on the CO western slope. Had been going to a internist for 4 years since my regular doctor moved. I had been on Armour Thyroid since 1964 when my thyroid and 2 parathyroids were removed for a pre-cancerous condition. I had been on 3 grains for years but this female doctor did "thyroid" tests and took my dose down to 1 1/2 grains. I kept feeling worse and she also took my hormone therapy from me saying I was to old to need that. I have osteoporosis (severe) and am allergic to Fosomax and related products. When I finally got angry about the way I was feeling, weight gain, hair loss, skin problems, pain, etc. she informed me my TSH was within normal limits and never even based my dose on T3 or T4 (which was not within normal limits). I then went to the Compound Pharmacy in town and they referred me to Dr. Scott Rollins, who bases Armour dosages on all three tests. I went to this wonderful man and he actually spends time with you, explains everything and found out I was actually hypothyroid, needed hormones for my osteoporosis, needed DHEA and not cortisol, etc. I am now being treated appropriately and can not tell you how much better I feel."
