The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care. Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. The doctor may be brilliant and innovative, but have a terrible bedside manner. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment. Please let me know if you have feedback -- positive or negative -- about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your "top" doctor.

Thanks! -- Mary

Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?

Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.
* The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
* The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
* The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
* Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.
* Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.

Dr. Lori Fritts, Endocrine Surgery, 3 Northwestern Drive, Bloomfield, CT, 960-726-1414. A reader writes: "I am so happy that I found Dr. Fritts. I have never had a Doctor make me feel so comfortable. Dr. Fritts was warm, caring, allowed me to bring in as many people as I wanted to discuss my condition. She took the time to answer all my questions, drew diagrams and made the whole process of having my thyroid removed easier than i had originally anticipated. Her post op care has been wonderful. She was very concerned about how I would feel about my scar and she went above and beyond to have it make it blend in with the creases in my neck. Her receptionist is also a very patient and kind." (Added 4/04)

A reader writes:
"Dr. Fritts has the most amazing bedside manner, now matter how busy she is she makes you feel as if you are the most important person there is. She did a sub-total thyroidectomy on me in June of 2005. She avails herself all hours of the day and night as well as weekends. My hormones were so out of whack for a while after surgery and she was always there to "talk me off the ledge" so to speak. I refer many people to her she is AMAZING!!!!" (Added Apr 06)

A reader writes:
"I was referred to Dr. Fritts by my endocrinologist saying, "If my daughter had your condition, I would only send her to Dr. Fritts!" She is the most amazing surgeon and person that this world has to offer. She went out of her way to make sure I understood everything that was to happen prior to/during/after my total thyroidectomy. During the surgery, my blood pressure spiked to 200/120 and my heart rate was over 130 and she was afraid I would have a stroke. I am here to tell you this today because Dr. Fritts saved my life-- not only during the surgery, but she gave me back a quality of life that I was sure I would never have again." (October 2006).

I also like that he takes the blood tests himself and you don't have to go t o a lab. The best thing I love about him is he takes the time out of his busy schedule to call me personally to give me my test results. Other doctors have someone else call you. He treats every patient like they are special not just a number. When he sees you he knows your name. I have had a lot of problems with my thyroid and Dr Rosa always knows what to do for me. A reader writes: "The doctor that I found was recommended to me by my aunt. Dr Germaine in Middletown, CT is a certified naturopath and she is a superb. Looking at your web site, I see many of the issues that she and I are working on together -- zone type eating, adequate rest, adding exercise, building up my immune system particularly with the use of essential fats, use of Armour thyroid instead of Synthroid, you name it. She listens and works with you as a whole person, not just a thyroid gland. I would recommend her to anyone. I pay for her out of my own pocket as insurance doesn't cover the cost. But my health is worth it. I do believe that some insurances pay for this type of coverage...I hope this helps you or whoever needs this information. Dr Jacqueline Germaine, her number is 860- 347-8600 there will be a taped message first, and then a receptionist will answer."

Dr. William Petit -- retired from practice

Marcie Wolinsky-Friedland, Internal medicine, Americas Medical Center, 31 Baily Ave, Ridgefield CT 06877, 203-431-6167. "Dr. Wolinsky truly listens. I complained to various doctors, including some well-known endos, for over 4 years but always got told well your test results are normal so there's nothing wrong with you. When I first went to see Dr. Wolinsky, she said yes your test results are in the normal range but you have many of the clinical symptoms of low thyroid. She prescribed Armour and also found that my adrenals were not working properly. She prefers using the most natural method but will not rule out using drugs if nothing else seems to work. She is also willing to use supplements if appropriate. Since seeing her, I actually feel warm for the first time in my life! I was one of those people who only felt good when my TSH was less than 1. She is comfortable using both conventional and alternative methods, whichever will work best for you. Her office does not participate in any insurance plans, but to me, my health is well worth the fee and I can still use my health plan's out of network benefits after I have met the deductible. Her willingness to try and get to the bottom of the problems and get my body working as good as possible is worth the expense."

He helped me tremendously. I came to him with Hashimotos Encephalopathy and it never recurred after he put me on Armor Thyroid, low dose cortisol and added help for my hormonal imbalance. He is very easy to speak with, is readily available if needed and gives you the time you need. I have a number of health problems and I am happy I found him." (May 2008)

Dr. Eglis Bogdonovics, Endocrinology / Diabetes, 780 Litchfield Street, Torrington, CT 06790, 860-496-2198. A reader writes: "I had many symptoms of Hashimotos for a long time and went to several doctors looking for an answer. The other doctors just ordered a TSH test and said it was "normal" . Dr. B. gave me a thorough evaluation and ordered a panel of tests, including antibodies. No other doctor had ever checked that before. Dr. B. is easy to talk to. When I saw him I was feeling very discouraged and embarrassed that my hair was falling out . Dr. B.'s manner set me at ease. Doctor B. prescribed the medication I need and I am feeling good for the first time in a very long time. I am getting good follow up care too." (Added 1/06)

West Hartford

Dr. Frank Aieta, N.D., Naturopathic Medicine, 301 North Main Street, CT, 06117, 860-232-9662,, A reader writes: "Dr. Aieta diagnosed me with hypothyroidism after numerous specialist said there was nothing wrong with me. They told me that based on the blood work my thyroid was normal, yet I was experiencing all the classic symptoms of hypothyroidism that I read about. Dr. Aieta treated me with herbs, nutrients and natural thyroid support and within a month all of my symptoms had subsided. Apparently I was very deficient in the proper nutrients that the body needed for active thyroid hormone to be produced. He said that I was not converting T4 the inactive thyroid hormone over to T3 which is the active form. I was very surprised that no other doctor that I went to was aware of this." (Added 6/05)

Another reader writes:
"I recently saw Dr. Aieta as a patient after reading a patient testimonial on this website and thank God I did. He was the first doctor that actually took my complaints seriously. I had a feeling for years that something was wrong with my thyroid but no doctors would listen to me. They told me my TSH was normal and that I probably needed to just be on an antidepressant to treat my symptoms. Doctor Aieta actually listened to me and recommended a therapeutic trial of Naturethroid, despite what my blood test showed and I started feeling better within a very short time. He also treated my weak adrenal glands with natural cortisol and DHEA. The combination gave me my life and sanity back. He also addressed some hormonal issues I was having through the use of bio-identical hormones. Thank you, Mary for providing us with such an excellent resource for quality doctors, if it wasn't for your website I never would have found Dr. Aieta and would still be suffering to this day. " (Added Dec. 2006)

Another fan:
"I have been very ill for many years with Fibromyalgia. Not one Dr. in the "normal" medical field offered me any relief. That is until I found Dr. Frank Aieta. He is a miracle worker. He is Brilliant! I have been to 1/2 a dozen other Naturopathic physicians in the last 30 years and that includes the famous Dr. Atkins. Only Dr. Aieta got me "back on my own two feet" again. I carry his cards in my wallet and anytime I hear someone say they have been ill and no one is helping them-I can hand them a card with full confidence that Dr. Aieta WILL!" (August 2007)

Dr. Marie DiPasquale, environmental allergist, 29 Old Farms Rd, Westport, CT 06880 (203) 226-1719 A reader had this to share, "I have several hormone disorders and related illnesses and this doctor listened, understood, and was willing to use both allopathic and alternative treatments to get me on the road to health. She is the only doctor willing to tackle all of my problems."
