He sat with hubby and myself for an hour for the initial visit. He was very thorough in his explanations of all procedures, risks, alternatives, etc. This included many visuals and written material we could take home and read. The incision was a hair less than 2". He uses a retractor so it doesn't have to be a wide cut. I have seen some people with 6-8" cuts after surgery. He told me to use vitamin E so the scar would be less noticeable. We were given a thorough report of the procedure including the cold nodules, the cyst, and the huge growth which were all removed. I was given all the information for my medical files without having to plead for them. Within a few hours of the operation I could speak, had no problem with the nerves, or parathyroid. This doctor radiates self confidence, yet is warm and patient oriented. A week after the operation the stitches were removed by his just pulling two thin strings that were outside the bandage. One little speck of blood on the cotton. No pain at all. The most thorough doctor I have ever come across. You can just look at his hands and know he is an excellent surgeon. Top notch."

"I noticed that someone from Largo, Florida recommended Lee Alice Goscin--who was quite excellent in Fort Lauderdale but when she moved...I found R. Mack Harrell who is also great. Both physicians are thorough in their approach to solving thyroid issues and attentive to a patient's concerns. Dr. Goscin had recommend less carbohydrates for me and exercise along with a supplementation of chromium picolinate to go along with my thyroid medications. Dr. Harrell made checked me with sonogram (i believe--in his office) and added a small amount of t3 to my t4 regimen and suggested that I try the South Beach Diet or principles of the South Beach diet with lowered carbohydrates. Endocrinologist University of Florida College of Medicine Gainesville, Florida 32610-0226 He mentioned that Synthroid had been the standard for a long time and there had been much about it in the news recently but he did not put me down for having the info from this newsletter and was more than willing to do a trial of adding T3 to the T4 based upon my 20+ years of written history of thyroid diagnosis treatment and problems. He would not go so far as to put me back on Armour. But he acknowledged that nature had given us T3 and T4 for a reason and we should not necessarily have to be stuck with just one. I was given a trial of Thyrolar 2 for 60 days. Health and numbers improved but still a little high in the T3. So now I am on generic T4 and Cytomel. I was interested in the fact that he waited for 2 months to recheck as previous physicians had only waited two weeks. And yes I got better slowly. The other day I looked in the mirror and my eyes are no longer sunken. He was very good at answering my questions and explaining his reasoning to me. He is going to write to my Family Practice Doc and explain to him the goals he has as far as my numbers and health are concerned.

In my humble opinion, the human body may be capable of reacting to a traumatic experience by developing disease. Dr.Diaz gets to know his patients, their experiences-both good and bad-and their concerns. He asks questions and calmly listens to his patients response. He then orders tests (blood-work, scans, etc..) to confirm his prognosis. Dr. Fernando Diaz is one who takes time and dedication with his patients. Even when my test results wouldn't budge below 5, they wouldn't prescribe higher doses because I was "within range" and "too high a dose will cause osteoporosis later". Who cares when I can't get out of bed now?! Dr. Dach was recommended by a friend and he's been a lifesaver. They were able to schedule a thyroid scan for me immediately and worked hard to provide me with an appointment to see Doctor Magee right away. I asked to be put on a cancellation list since I work only 5 mnutes from his office, and, to their credit, I was put on that list and called in for an earlier appointment than originally scheduled. Doctor Magee was wonderful. He took time to explain my thyroid scan results, my lab results, that I have Graves' Disease and what my treatment options are. He spent an entire hour with me. He is not the type of doctor who says "this is what we're going to do." It's a decision the patient and doctor makes together. "I was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes in Aug 1995. I was being treated in a military hospital, of which I am very grateful. For personal reasons I no longer was able to receive care from the military. I began seeing a primary care physician. After approx six years of primary care for my IDDM, I was referred to an endocrinologist due to uncontrolled glucose, constant headaches, incredibly high hemoglobin results, failing vision, weight gain, etc. I was very disappointed with the lack of concern I received from the endocrinologist I was referred to. In May 2006 I was hospitalized for heart arrhythmia, 500+ glucose, and leg cramps. In the hospital I was treated by Dr. J. Sample MaGee as the attending physician and things have not been the same. My Hemoglobin results have decreased, my vision is better than ever, I no longer have the pain in my legs and most of all Dr. MaGee and the staff are wonderful. I know this sounds like a sales pitch, but I have nothing to gain, other than to vent my feelings about the great level of care, concern and attention I've received in the past three months. I thank God, I got sick that day, versus some other day, otherwise, I would have never been treated by or gotten a referral to Dr. MaGee. I would go to my boss's doctor appointments with him for support and noticed Dr. MaGee's genuine concern. I wanted that, and now I am more than grateful. All my meds were changed and I now look better and feel better than ever before." (October 2006).

I recently had a baby and had my gall bladder removed. Dr. Fernandez gave me progesterone shots to help me with the baby to carry to full term. I developed pre eclampsia at 38 weeks and tried natural birth but also developed low blood sugar. I had to have an emergency c section. I'm 41 years old, NEVER had problems with my blood pressure and I feel after reading Dr. Blanchard's book to ask for the TSH test. Mine came back "normal range" at 2.3. I discussed this book with Dr. Fernandez and he believes that sometimes people can display normal range but have symptoms of hypothyroidism. So he started me on 25 mg of Synthroid to see how it goes. I don't have insurance and he is saving me money by not sending me to a specialist. I am having problems regulating my low blood sugar. So I hope this works. I thank God for Dr. Fernandez. He helped me to carry my son full term and is working with me now and has been for several years. I hope he can help someone else. My surgery was expected to take 6 hours but due to the fast spread, Dr. Shellenberger ended up spending 15 hours in surgery removing almost 50 lymphnodes bilaterally in my neck as well as my entire thyroid while keeping in tact my vocal chords and all shoulder and neck muscles. Within 2 hours of waking I was talking and within a few days my voice was back to normal. He continues to closely monitor my treatment and progress along side my endocrinologist. I cannot say enough about Dr. Shellenberger. I had heard through the grapevine later on how good she was in several specific situations. Also all my coworkers think she is great. When I knew that I needed thyroid surgery I asked my friend the pathologist whom he would recommend and she was on his list of high favorites. Also my endocrinologist recommended her. Her office looks like a home and there is beauty all around you when you are there. The staff are really nice and helpful. Dr. Sylvia is so thorough and always remembers that you are the patient. She explains the surgery well and has you make a list of questions right up to surgery. She will phone you at home the night before surgery and ask if you have any more questions. She was right beside me preop supporting me. After surgery when I had problems with my bandage (not her fault) and she had to be called in the night, she was very kind to the nurse who took care of me. After surgery she was looking out for my emotional health with the cancer diagnosis and making sure that I had a support system in place. The physical scar is looking great with no problems after surgery. She gave me lots of tips on how to make the scar fade the best."

He then prescribed several different dosages and allowed my to try each one, reminding me to stay on the same dosage for at least 6 weeks. My endocrinologist would not even listen to my requests to try another drug and chastised me for trying to play doctor.
