THYROID TOP DOCTORS DIRECTORY The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care. Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. The doctor may be brilliant and innovative, but have a terrible bedside manner. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment. Please let me know if you have feedback -- positive or negative -- about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your "top" doctor. Thanks! -- Mary |

Altamonte Springs/Greater Orlando Dr. Ivan R. Rosado, 661 E. Altomonte Drive, Altomonte Springs, Florida. (407) 830-1677. A reader tells us, "Dr. Rosado does 5-6 thyroidectomies per week. He sat with hubby and myself for an hour for the initial visit. He was very thorough in his explanations of all procedures, risks, alternatives, etc. This included many visuals and written material we could take home and read. The incision was a hair less than 2". He uses a retractor so it doesn't have to be a wide cut. I have seen some people with 6-8" cuts after surgery. He told me to use vitamin E so the scar would be less noticeable. We were given a thorough report of the procedure including the cold nodules, the cyst, and the huge growth which were all removed. I was given all the information for my medical files without having to plead for them. Within a few hours of the operation I could speak, had no problem with the nerves, or parathyroid. This doctor radiates self confidence, yet is warm and patient oriented. A week after the operation the stitches were removed by his just pulling two thin strings that were outside the bandage. One little speck of blood on the cotton. No pain at all. The most thorough doctor I have ever come across. You can just look at his hands and know he is an excellent surgeon. Top notch." Altamonte Springs Dr. Scott VanLue -- NO LONGER LISTED (October 2006) Boca Raton Dr. Levenson, endocrinologist, 561 391 4441 Palmetto Park Rd. west of Powerline Rd. - west of the Shell station, on the north side- call for directions. A reader writes: "He takes the TIME to listen to you, discuss everything, AND he even calls you AT HOME in the evening to discuss test results, etc. He's very caring. He's accurate with his diagnosis, is conservative- he doesn't want you on more medication than you need to be." Boca Raton Dr. Robbins, 400 South Dixie Highway,#210. I bet a lot of your readers have this syndrome but they never went to the right doctor for a correct diagnosis." Boca Raton Charles E. Williamson MD, Functional Medicine, 2799 N.W. 2nd. Brandon/Tampa Bay Area Dr. Carol Roberts Holistic Doctor Brandon, Florida 813 661-3662. "Dr.
Roberts is a breath of fresh air! She listens to your concerns, thoroughly explains her treatment focus,
answers your questions, and treats you according to how "YOU" feel, not just how the numbers read.
She treats your whole body , not just the gland under your chin! Prior to meeting Dr. Roberts, I was the
typical thyroid patient who spent years going to endocrinologist who either over-billed my insurance
company for any test they could (but didn't treat my thyroid at all), told me surgery was the only option,
or they filled me up with Synthroid, Glucophage and diet pills! No one would listen to how "I" felt. They
just read the numbers on the lab work and declared me "healed." According to them, if I didn't feel well,
then obviously I needed an antidepressant! Dr. Roberts is simply a wonderful, caring human being. I've
recommended her to a couple of friends/associates and they, like me, are feeling better than they have
in decades!"

is an associate of Dr. Carol Roberts at Wellness Works, whom I found
on your website. I was unable to get an appointment with Dr. Roberts
right away, but was told Dr. Bradshaw was just as good as Dr. Roberts.
On my first visit, Dr. Bradshaw IMMEDIATELY took me off of 4 meds that
my endocrinologist and my internist had me on, off. She put me on Armour
thyroid. This is the BEST I have felt in FIVE YEARS since being diagnosed
with thyroid cancer and hypothyroidism!!! I've been losing weight effortlessly,
have more energy, and people have noticed that I'm almost back to my
"old self" again. She's great!!!" (added 1/04) Cape Coral Richard Torricelli, General practice/internist/primary care, Del Prado Blvd, Cape Coral, Florida 33914, 239-573-1606 Delray Beach Nancy De Jesus, MD, Holistic Family Medicine, Bioidentical Hormones and

hormonal imbalances can affect not only your health buy your life. I visited so many doctors and took
so many unnecessary medications: antidepressants, diuretics, blood pressure and cholesterol drugs just
to name a few. Dr. De Jesus correctly diagnosed me with hypothyroidism and Progesterone/Estrogen
imbalance, I started Armour Thyroid and Bioidentical Hormones and I am a new woman in control of
my life." (Added 6/05) Fort Lauderdale Richard Mack Harrell, Endocrinologist, Fort Lauderdale, 33308. "I noticed that someone from Largo, Florida recommended Lee Alice Goscin--who was quite excellent in Fort Lauderdale but when she moved...I found R. Mack Harrell who is also great. Both physicians are thorough in their approach to solving thyroid issues and attentive to a patient's concerns. Dr. Goscin had recommend less carbohydrates for me and exercise along with a supplementation of chromium picolinate to go along with my thyroid medications. Dr. Harrell made checked me with sonogram (i believe--in his office) and added a small amount of t3 to my t4 regimen and suggested that I try the South Beach Diet or principles of the South Beach diet with lowered carbohydrates. The end result was that I had lost over 50 pounds and felt better about myself. It's great to find doctors who listen to their patients." (August 2007) Ft. Weiss -- no longer listed (October 2007) Gainesville Laurence Kennedy M. D. Endocrinologist University of Florida College
of Medicine Gainesville, Florida 32610-0226 He mentioned that Synthroid
had been the standard for a long time and there had been much about
it in the news recently but he did not put me down for having the info
from this newsletter and was more than willing to do a trial of adding
T3 to the T4 based upon my 20+ years of written history of thyroid diagnosis
treatment and problems. He would not go so far as to put me back on
Armour. But he acknowledged that nature had given us T3 and T4 for a
reason and we should not necessarily have to be stuck with just one.
I was given a trial of Thyrolar 2 for 60 days. Health and numbers improved
but still a little high in the T3. So now I am on generic T4 and Cytomel.
I was interested in the fact that he waited for 2 months to recheck
as previous physicians had only waited two weeks. And yes I got better
slowly. The other day I looked in the mirror and my eyes are no longer
sunken. He was very good at answering my questions and explaining his
reasoning to me. He is going to write to my Family Practice Doc and
explain to him the goals he has as far as my numbers and health are
concerned. Gainesville Dr. Mazzaferri -- NO LONGER LISTED (June 2006) Hollywood Dr. Fernando Diaz, endocrinologist. A reader writes: "Dr. Diaz diagnosed

carcinoma of my thyroid. He kept giving me the same medication and I
kept feeling awful – tired, grumpy, depressed and gaining weight like
crazy!! I finally made the decision on my own to go see someone else

the only one to listen and find my problem was Dr. Dajani. Not only did I have a low thyroid, but I had
many thyroid nodules as well. She is very caring and compassionate. Her staff was very caring as well.
I feel sure that I will now be on the road to recovery. I highly recomend her as a very caring and
competent Endocrinoligist for anyone seeking a Doctor to care for their thyroid or diabetes needs."

hyperthyroidism and told I needed to seen an endocrinologist. Doctor Magee came highly recommended
by not only other doctors, but people in Jacksonville who have diabetes, thyroid problems, and other
problems with the endocrine system. My first dealings were with his staff, and his staff is top notch. I
can't say enough good things. They were able to schedule a thyroid scan for me immediately and worked
hard to provide me with an appointment to see Doctor Magee right away. I asked to be put on a
cancellation list since I work only 5 mnutes from his office, and, to their credit, I was put on that list and
called in for an earlier appointment than originally scheduled. Doctor Magee was wonderful. He took
time to explain my thyroid scan results, my lab results, that I have Graves' Disease and what my
treatment options are. He spent an entire hour with me. He is not the type of doctor who says "this is
what we're going to do." It's a decision the patient and doctor makes together. I go back in 6 weeks to
discuss the options he gave me and formulate a game plan. I've never felt so comfortable with a doctor
or his staff." (Added 6/05) Jacksonville Dr. Waduud -- no longer listed Jupiter Dr. Gary Pepper Endocrinologist Palm Beach Diabetes and Endocrine Specialists. "He has worked with me 5 years now. He has been willing to change my dose of Levoxyl/Cytomel per my needs and was willing to prescribe Armour per my request. We have built a good relationship and I trust him to treat me properly. I started on Synthroid, felt better, however my doses increased regularly. Then when the dose topped out I started feeling very tired between meals. That's when he suggested Cytomel, thank god! It worked very well, however proper dosage was critical. I then asked for and got a scrip for Armour. I think Gary Pepper listens well and spends the proper amount of time with me." Jupiter Daniel Nuchovich, MD -- no longer listed Kissimmee Jose Fernandez, General practice/internist/primary care, 300 N. John Young Parkway, Kissimmee, Florida 34741, 407-935-9012. I recently had a baby and had my gall bladder removed. Dr. Fernandez gave me progesterone shots to help me with the baby to carry to full term. I developed pre eclampsia at 38 weeks and tried natural birth but also developed low blood sugar. I had to have an emergency c section. I'm 41 years old, NEVER had problems with my blood pressure and I feel after reading Dr. Blanchard's book to ask for the TSH test. Mine came back "normal range" at 2.3. I discussed this book with Dr. Fernandez and he believes that sometimes people can display normal range but have symptoms of hypothyroidism. So he started me on 25 mg of Synthroid to see how it goes. I don't have insurance and he is saving me money by not sending me to a specialist. I am having problems regulating my low blood sugar. So I hope this works. I thank God for Dr. Fernandez. He helped me to carry my son full term and is working with me now and has been for several years. I hope he can help someone else. I also read the about.com website and appreciate what you do Mary, you are right we are in charge of our health and it is our responsibility." (October 2006.) I have been to many doctors in the past 20 years and she was the first

She changed the medicine to Unithroid and increased my dose. I feel

He doesn't take insurance but his fees are reasonable. He is a regular doctor but leans toward the holistic and will prescribe Armour without a fight. My surgery was expected to take 6 hours but due to the fast spread, Dr. Shellenberger ended up spending 15 hours in surgery removing almost 50 lymphnodes bilaterally in my neck as well as my entire thyroid while keeping in tact my vocal chords and all shoulder and neck muscles. Within 2 hours of waking I was talking and within a few days my voice was back to normal. He continues to closely monitor my treatment and progress along side my endocrinologist. I have had some good success with T4/T3 combo therapy in this setting in many patients. But as you know, it's not for everyone. Hypothyroidism must be treated one patient at a time, there is no universal approach that works for every one. A reader writes: "I would like to add an EXCELLENT doctor to your file. I had been trying for almost 30 years to receive several hormone tests, had had a replacement dr. change my Armour t3-t4 to synthroid, and had hit a brick wall. Because of other circumstances I enlisted treatment through the Bay Pines VA Medical center in St. Petersburg Florida, and was referred to Dr. Brickener, an Endocrinologist. He listened, tested me as I requested, placed me on t3-t4 therapy and Testosterone injections. My symptoms were markedly reduced, my Fibromyalgia pain reduced from a level seven to a level two, and my strength and endurance increased. Dr. Brickener was a literal lifesaver and Godsend!" Oakland Park Blvd, Sunrise, FL, 33351, 954-741-4181. A reader writes: "I was recently diagnosed with Hashimoto's Autoimmune after 2 years of trying to get my primary care physician to run antiglobulin tests which turned out to be very high. I was referred to Dr. Odell with my two page list of symptoms in hand and my own extensive research on the subject. I was placed on thyroxine. I was a bit wary of this medication after reading all the holistic books, including those by Mary Shomon which are my favorite but decided to give it a try. Eight weeks later my symptoms were worse and I returned to Susan very upset. She was very understanding and told me that we would do whatever it took to make me feel better. I was placed on Armour 4 weeks ago and feel markedly better. I credit Susan for being a kind, concerned, caring person which in turn makes her a wonderful physician. I feel I am well on my way to managing this disease."(August 2007) Tallahassee Celeste B. Hart, MD -- no longer listed Tampa Dr. Sylvia Campbell, Surgeon. 217 S. Nantanzas Ave, Tampa, FL 33609,
813-875-2655. A reader shares, "Dr. Campbell is incredible. I am a nurse
and I first had contact with her speaking at a conference I was attending.
I thought to myself if I ever need a surgeon she would be it. I had
heard through the grapevine later on how good she was in several specific
situations. Also all my coworkers think she is great. When I knew that
I needed thyroid surgery I asked my friend the pathologist whom he would
recommend and she was on his list of high favorites. Also my endocrinologist
recommended her. Her office looks like a home and there is beauty all
around you when you are there. The staff are really nice and helpful.
Dr. Sylvia is so thorough and always remembers that you are the patient.
She explains the surgery well and has you make a list of questions right
up to surgery. She will phone you at home the night before surgery and
ask if you have any more questions. She was right beside me preop supporting
me. After surgery when I had problems with my bandage (not her fault)
and she had to be called in the night, she was very kind to the nurse
who took care of me. After surgery she was looking out for my emotional
health with the cancer diagnosis and making sure that I had a support
system in place. The physical scar is looking great with no problems
after surgery. She gave me lots of tips on how to make the scar fade
the best." Tampa/St. Petersburg A reader writes: "I would like to recommend my physician, Kevin Nowakowski, M.D. in St. Petersburg, Florida, to anyone who is looking for an interested, knowledgeable endocrinologist." Tampa James Sotrop -- NO LONGER LISTED, who used to be listed on this site, has requested that his name be removed. (June 2005) Tampa Jeffrey Miller, Rheumatology, 3218 West Azeele, Tampa, FL 813-876-7523, "He spent 2 ½ hours with me the first time I saw him, taking a complete medical history, asking questions, and checking me. He was willing to follow my intuition that I needed to try something different than T4. He put me on Armour and I felt much better, but I told him I might need a different dosage. He then prescribed several different dosages and allowed my to try each one, reminding me to stay on the same dosage for at least 6 weeks. When I had a problem recently on a totally different matter, his office staff managed to work me into his schedule so I didn’t need to go to the emergency room. He’s been great." (Added 4/04) Tampa Steven Schweinshaupt MD, Primary Care, Gunn Highway, Tampa, FL, 813-969-2030. A reader writes: He listened to me and my concerns. I was being treated on T4 only (Synthroid) and my labs were close to normal, although I was feeling awful with an array of symptoms. My endocrinologist would not even listen to my requests to try another drug and chastised me for trying to play doctor. Dr, Schweinshaupt listened, ran additional tests and is now giving me a trial on Armour Natural Thyroid. He did not have the typical "just because I graduated med school I know all" attitude. I think he is a great caring doctor and would recommend him to anyone." (Added 6/05) Tampa Raul F. Nodal MD, Other, 5012 Gunn Highway, Tampa, FL.
