THYROID TOP DOCTORS DIRECTORY The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care. Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. The doctor may be brilliant and innovative, but have a terrible bedside manner. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment. Please let me know if you have feedback -- positive or negative -- about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your "top" doctor. Thanks! -- Mary |

Aurora Pauline Harding, M.D. -- no longer listed (May 2008) Berwyn Gary Wainer, General practice/internist/primary care, erwyn, IL, 60402, 708-484-0042 Bloomingdale Dr William Epperly, Bio Identical Hormone Therapy, 245 S Gary Ave Ste#
105, Bloomingdale IL 60108, 630-893-9661/630-893-5665 fx. www.drepperly.com. A reader writes: "He
was the only doctor who did a full hormone check including testosterone of which I was extremely low
on. He started treating me with bio identical hormone pellets of estradiol and testosterone added natural
progesterone orally and Armour thyroid as I was at 2.63. Shortly after he started treating me I
started dropping weight which I could not do for 10 years of several other doctors. I finally had energy,
and all my peri/menopausal symptoms had greatly improved or disappeared. He listens and spends time
with you, has a great bedside manner. And you will not find an overbooked, waiting room, with a doctor
rushing to get to the next patient. He's truly been a Godsend. He works with both conventional and
alternative medicine and as an added credit he's also an allergist. I like the fact that he actually knows
his patients, including reviewing your chart before he comes in the room. He works at getting people to
realize they must do their part in their health too. Finding the right doctor has made a huge difference
in both my physical health and mental as well." (Added 1/06)

done a wonderful job. She listens to what I have to say patiently and
without exasperation. She also has a thyroid disorder herself so she
understands what goes with this type of disorder. She has a family practice
with her husband but if you see her as a doctor you always see her unless
you don't mind seeing Dr. Rey her husband. She is wonderful and I recommend
her highly for anyone in the Kankakee area. She is also Board Certified
in Family Practice." Bourbonnais Keith Moss, General practice/internist/primary care, 300 Riverside Dr., Bourbonnais, IL, 60914, Ph/Fax: 815-935-2784. A reader writes: "I've recently started seeing Dr. Moss after my doctor moved out of state. I was concerned that he wouldn't be open to my thyroid problem as most doctors seem to be. I was wrong. He is wonderful! He does the appropriate lab work including testing for antibodies etc. and listens to me as I let him know I monitor my bloodwork as well as any doctor. When my T4 level drops and I share how I'm feeling he tweaks the dosage of Armor Thyroid I am taking. Anyone in this area, should consider seeing him. He doesn't even use a Physicians assistant, he sees his patients himself. I feel he is very thorough, not just with thyroid conditions. Was attentive, skilled and very down to earth. When I asked if we could schedule the second surgery more around what I needed then his schedule he totally worked with me to do so!" Just an exceptionally caring doctor, the best I have ever seen." Freeport Dr. Clarence Parks, Internal Medicine/ Pediatrics, Freeport Health Network, 1036 W. Stephenson, Freeport, IL 61032, 815-599-7790. "Dr. Parks has been wonderful. He listens to the concerns I have about my life style and the goals I have yet to accomplish. He takes the time to determine if I am able to have the quality of life I have been struggling to attain after RAI. Dr. Parks does not just look at my TSH and T4 numbers. He always looks at my entire quality of life. He has been willing to change my dosage of Levoxyl and Cytomel by very small increments to get the desired results. He is always willing to listen to, or look at, any new information I have brought to his attention. I highly recommend him to any one struggling with being "sick and tired of feeling sick and tired.'" I appreciate his desire to use the least invasive but effective means to improve his patient’s health." Herrin Kelly Evans MD, 220 S Park Ave, Herrin, IL, (618) 988-9777. A reader writes: "I'd had many hypothyroid symptoms for several years but didn't realize it (low sex-drive, constipation, dry skin & hair, weight gain, hives) but when my hair started falling out I went for tests (on my 36th b'day), only to be told the results were normal. Eight months later I went back again because I KNEW something was wrong. My doctor's PA listened to me & ordered more tests which showed my thyroid antibodies were high (1260). Next stop was an endocrinologist who diagnosed Hashimoto's but "couldn't" treat me because my levels weren't low enough. He did put me on a potassium supplement because mine was very low (so was my magnesium & sodium). He had me come in every 4 months to check my thyroid levels. Eight months later I was fed up with waiting- I'd lost a third of my hair & it was still coming out! I'd been warm natured my whole life but for the past 2 yrs, been freezing to death, felt like I was developing Alzheimers, & tired constantly. My chiropractor recommended I see Dr. Evans. He told me to go prepared & gave me instructions for taking my basal temp. I typed up a brief medical history (I was hyperthyroid at 16 but otherwise very healthy), a list of my symptoms, & previous lab results. Dr Evans started me on Armour Thyroid that day! After a couple dosage adjustments, I was feeling better than I had in a long time! My hair stopped falling out & I even had some very fine hair starting to grow back in. That was over a year ago. I've started to have some symptoms come back (hair loss, low sex-drive, cold) though my TSH level hasn't changed. She has me scheduled for a complete thyroid panel & even mentioned adding alternative medicines. I'm thankful for a doctor who will look at the whole patient, not just a blood test. She's been a blessing to me." (October 2006). facility. It was obvious to me upon my first visit that their first
priority is with "how the patient feels" rather than lab values alone.
After years of needless suffering and going from one doctor to another
I was unprepared for the genuine interest that the staff displayed in
trying to make me feel well and whole again. Significant efforts were
made in getting me properly diagnosed and treated. What impressed me
most of all was their knowledge in the area of endocrinology. They moved
beyond the typical TSH testing and used other standards to identify
and treat my long-standing thyroid problem. I can never remember receiving
such a complete and thorough physical in my life. I feel like I have
found a diamond in the rough. What a welcomed change. This facility
performed circles around the doctors in my city --- the hour drive is
nothing compared to the care that I receive. Anyone that walks through
the doors of the New Life Medical Clinic is truly blessed." (Added 6/02).
