INDIANA:
THYROID TOP DOCTORS DIRECTORY

The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care. Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. The doctor may be brilliant and innovative, but have a terrible bedside manner. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment. Please let me know if you have feedback -- positive or negative -- about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your "top" doctor.

Thanks! -- Mary
TELL US ABOUT YOUR DOCTOR!

Become part of the movement for better care! Help keep great doctors in business and encourage more doctors to properly treat thyroid patients by recommending the smart, caring, innovative practitioner who treats your thyroid condition. Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?

Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.
* The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
* The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
* The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
* Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.
* Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.

Carmel

Tod C. Huntley, MD, Surgeon, 12188-A North Meridian St, Suite 375, Carmel, IN, 46032, www.hnsaonline.com, thuntley@hnsaonline.com

"Dr. Huntley is wonderful! I saw 2 other surgeons in recent years for possible thyroid surgery, but was scared to have surgery. I then saw him, and felt more comfortable with him than the others. He did the surgery endoscopically through an incision less than an inch, and it can't be seen! He was kind, explained everything in detail, and did a great job. His office staff was also great. My doctor also says he is the best." (August 2007)

Chesterton/Valparaiso

Dr. Michael Manakas, D.O., Osteopathic Physician, 926-8664 Chesterton, IN 462-6192 Valparaiso, IN. If a patient feels a certain brand or type of thyroid medication is the one that is best for him / her, he will let the patient try it. He takes time with his patients. He answers all of a patient's questions extremely well and is very thorough with his explanations. He is an excellent diagnostician."
Another reader recommends Dr. Manakas:
"This doctor is open minded. He has helped me to recover and make my way to enjoying life again. He is an excellent and caring doctor. I recommend all thyroid patients to go see him." (Added 10/05)

Evansville

Dr. Andrew C. Thieneman -- no longer listed (June 2008)

Evansville

Dr. Mary M. Tadros, Endocrinologist, 519 Harriet Street, Evansville, IN 47710, 812-423-9699, "I was originally diagnosed with hyperthyroidism at age 13. My first doctor treated me with PTU, which caused major problems for me. After 3 years of horrible side effects from PTU, I stopped by to see Dr. Tadros. She diagnosed me with Hashimoto’s Disease. Because this went undiagnosed for so long, my thyroid has been destroyed and I will have to use hormone replacement therapy for the rest of my life. But, thanks to Dr. Tadros, my thyroid levels are in a normal range and many of my side effects are gone. I lived with hives constantly for 2 years, but Dr. Tadros took me off of the steroids I had been prescribed and told me never to use them again. Instead, she put me on Zyrtec. I now have a very close personal relationship with Dr. Tadros. I would highly recommend her to anyone!" (Added 4/04)

Evansville

Dr. Doris Best, Kenmore Drive, Evansville, IN, 812-471-8503. A reader writes: "Dr. Best took my thyroid symptoms seriously and took the time to not only help me, but to educate herself on thyroid disease. She knew all the labs to order. She is a wonderful, caring doctor and I would highly suggest anyone in the area to see her." (Added 10/05)

Evansville/Newburgh

Dr. Gregory Toothman, Family Practice, 4107 Gateway Blvd. Newburgh IN 47630 812-858-9400

"Dr. Toothman is the best doctor I have ever had! He listens is open to new ideas and takes time with his patients. The only downside to this is that he may be running behind for his appointments because he really cares and spends more time with you than the insurance companies would probably like! Unlike my previous doctor he does not want to only treat my symptoms -- chronic fatigue and fibro-type symptoms but wants to go to the root and find out why I feel so tired and achy. After a hair analysis and a Candida culture --ordered from Great Smokies Labs he found an active yeast infection and high mercury and aluminum levels in my body. I just started on Armour thyroid since my T4 and T3 are a bit low and my reverse T3 is high --may be blocking receptors for T3 . So far I am impressed. He is open to herbal natural nutritional therapies too. I am so relieved to have found Dr. Toothman. Insurance companies may not reimburse for Great Smokies Lab tests but they are very useful and worth the money IMO."

Evansville

Ronald Kimberlin, Endocrinology, 3801 Bellemeade Avenue Suite 200C, Evansville, IN 47714, 812-485-1783, "This doctor has a caring, careful, calm manner. He bases treatment on symptoms and blood work. He is open to prescribing Armour. He asks relevant questions about other possible health problems to stimulate your thinking for the next visit." (Added Dec. 04)

Ft. Wayne

Dr. Ashok Kadambi, M.D., F.A.C.E, Endocrinology, 4646 W. Jefferson Blvd., Suite 100, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, 46804, (260) 436-1248/ Fax (260) 436-7968. "Dr. Kadambi treats according to how a patient is feeling, will prescribe Armour, checks adrenals, believes in using supplements such as selenium, is very caring and listens to ME. I feel he takes a great interest in treating his patients, no problem is minor to him."

Another recommendation:
"Dr. Kadambi tested me thoroughly and regularly. He was the first to find I had Hashimoto's and has treated my disease aggressively. He asks me how I FEEL and believes me. He and his staff are knowledgeable and professional. I would recommend them highly." (Added Dec. 04)

A reader writes:
"Dr. Kadambi tested me thoroughly and regularly. He was the first to find I had Hashimotos and has treated my disease aggressively. He asks me how I FEEL and believes me. He and his staff are knowledgeable and professional. I would recommend them highly." (Added: Dec. 04)

Another reader writes:
"After years of not knowing what I had and being treated with incorrect treatments for hypothyroidism, Dr. Kadambi and his partner Dr. LaSalle have properly diagnosed my condition as Hashimoto's Thyroiditis which periodically flares. They are committed to reaching the proper diagnosis and developing the proper treatment plan. With their help, all the pieces of my medical puzzle have fallen into place and I now have a complete picture of what, why, and how to treat it. They're the best!" (Added 6/05)

Another reader recommends Dr. Kadambi:
"Dr. Kadambi takes a natural approach to treating thyroid issues. He listens to your symptoms and asks a lot of questions. He has restored my quality of life." (Added 10/05)

Another fan of Dr. Kadambi:
"Dr. Kadambi actually cares about how you feel and does what it takes to help you feel well." (Added 10/05)

Another fan:
"I suffered for 2 years with headaches, back pain, weight gain and hot flashes after having a complete hysterectomy. All other doctors tested my thyroid and said it was "normal" and I went through many, many procedures to control my back pain, many trips to the Emergency room for migraines and basically suffered with he hot flashes. Dr. Kadambi was very diligent in treating me by my symptoms and working on getting me back to normal! I was originally on Premarin for estrogen replacement and found that my body was not absorbing the estrogen as it is a synthetic hormone. I was switched to hormone creams and that helped a lot more. Now I have been taken off one of the hormone creams as my body is not absorbing enough of it and back to pill form of the same medicine. I have been seeing Dr. Kadambi for 7 months now and it has made a world of difference in my life. Although I am not completely feeling better yet as he is still working to get my hormone levels to where they should be, I am feeling more like my old self! I have lost 16 lbs as my thyroid is now being treated by the separate levels instead of the total TSH level. Dr. Kadambi is very kind, concerned about his patients and he LISTENS to you! I was referred to him by my mother who is also being treated by him."(August 2007)

Evansville

Anne Butsch, MD, Holistic/complementary/alternative MD, 3700 Bellemeade Ave Ste 108, Evansville, IN 47714, 812-401-4222, 812-485-6114 / drbutsch@yahoo.com

"Hi -- I'm nominating myself as I send lots of my patients to your website. I follow the guidelines of Institute for Functional Medicine, AACE and others who treat patients, not labs. I prescribe a lot of Armor, but occasionally prescribe Synthroid/Cytomel. I also use a lot of kelp and other thyroid support supplements Thanks." (May 2008)

Fort Wayne

Dr. Peter Jakacki, Family Practice and OB, 2516 East Dupont Road, Fort Wayne, IN, 46825, Ph/Fax: 260-497-0084. A reader writes: "Yeah for Jakacki. He is top notch!!!! He discovered my Hashimoto's. He is a chiropractor as well as a strong biochemist. He also uses quality testing labs such as Spectracell and Doctor's Data. He recently diagnosed my daughters medical problems when two trips to the emergency room at a top 100 hospital left us with big medical bill, unnecessary procedures and no diagnosis. He is a top doctor and a wonderful human being. Just be prepared to wait (even 4 hours)." (Added Apr 06)

A reader writes:
"I suffered with a myriad of health problems that went undiagnosed for 4 years (even though I was trying diligently to learn what the cause of my problems was) before I met Dr. Jakacki. I met him at a party for mutual friends. My mother knew him, and had told him about my problems. After speaking with him very briefly about the nature of my problems, he told me that he knew what was wrong - my pituitary gland. He was in his 2nd year of residency at the time, and he was able to diagnose my problem in a matter of minutes! I began seeing him as my physician, and through testing learned that he was indeed correct. I have Panhypopituitarism, which also causes problems with the thyroid. Before I could hardly stay awake while driving, my hair fell out, my metabolism stopped and I couldn't function on a basic level. Now, 6 years later, I am working part-time at a hospital, have 5 kids that I am able to keep up with and am lightyears ahead of where I was when we first met. Dr. Jakacki takes each patient's needs very seriously and invests much time, thought and research into providing the best possible care. He literally is a genius, and he is constantly bettering himself by learning from experts through reading and attending seminars. He is the best doctor in the greater Fort Wayne area, bar none. He saved my life! " (Added Dec. 2006)

Fort Wayne

Myra Moneva, Endocrinology -- moved (July 2008), Lutheran Hospital Heart Center, Fort Wayne, IN, 260-432-2297. A reader writes:"Found my nodules while they were still tiny and prescribed Armour." (Added Apr 06)

Highland

Carolina V. Ocampo MD, General Practitioner, 3100 45th St., Highland, IN 46322-3289, 219-923-4611. A reader writes: "Doctor Ocampo is bright, kind, and a very good listener. Regarding treatment of hypothyroidism, she believes that making the patient feel better is the most important goal." (Added Apr 06)

Indianapolis / Zionsville

Dr. Dale Guyer. L. Dale Guyer, Holistic/complementary/alternative MD, 836 E. 86th St., Indianapolis, IN 46240, 317-580-WELL, http://www.guyerinstitute.com / patientcare@daleguyermd.com

A reader writes: "He is an MD but has treated me for the last 4 years using only holistic methods, i.e. supplements, energy work, counseling, nutrition. I started with him while undergoing treatment for stage 3 breast cancer...so far so good! He has helped me regain my health. He is the Dr. who uncovered this thyroid problem and has me on Armour Thyroid. I have only been on it for 5 days. Thanks Dr. Guyer for all of your help and concern.

A reader adds:
"Just a note to anyone considering going to this doctor. I think he's very sharp and is quite personable, but they don't bill to insurance and you must pay up front. If you choose to see this doctor, be forewarned--you must track your time and double-check with your insurance company before you do anything." (Added 11/02)

Yet another reader comments:
"I wanted to comment on the post about the cost of seeing this doctor. I have recently started seeing him. Maybe things have changed since the last comment. He does not accept insurance, so you do have to file it yourself. However, it only costs $300 for an initial visit that lasts 30 minutes. Also, my visit ended up taking 1 hour, and I was still charged only $300 even though the visit was supposed to be 30 minutes. He is really helping me regain my health, and has a lot of knowledge for treating hypothyroidism (not sure about others). I would recommend him to anyone." (added 1/04)

Another reader writes:
"Dr Guyer saved my life. He is amazing. He listens to your symptoms and treats accordingly. Before I went to see him, I was sleeping 16 hours a day and could barely get out of bed. I was on the verge of losing my job because I couldn't concentrate. Now I have plenty of energy and am a normal functioning adult again. Dr Guyer is quite expensive, but he is worth every penny. I would pay any amount of money to feel healthy and I do not regret it. Thank you Dr Guyer for saving me!" (August 2007)

Another reader writes:
"I highly recommend this doctor. He is a highly intelligent man and obviously has a great understanding of the art of replacement therapies including thyroid, T3, T4 and combinations thereof. However he is excellent at explaining his thoughts to patients in a people-friendly and easy to understand way. I find him to be a great listener and a compassionate practitioner. He seems willing to go to any lengths to work with his patients to find the causes, cures and/or treatments for their problems. He uses both traditional and alternative approaches in his practice. I wish all doctors were this competent and compassionate!" (May 2008)

Indianapolis

Ernest O. Asamoah -- No longer listed (July 2008)

Indianapolis

Dr. Helmut O. Steinberg, Endocrinology and Metabolism, 975 W. Walnut St. Medical Research and Library Building (IB424), Indianapolis, IN 46202, 317-278-7826, hsteinbe@iupui.edu. A reader writes: "Dr. Steinberg was my third endocrinologist. I wasn't expecting much, but I walked out of his office having the most wonderful experience. Dr. Steinberg was warm and funny, and was willing to listen to EVERYTHING I had to say. He expertly described my various conditions and the links between them. He also does not rely on lab values. He listened to my symptoms and is treating based on those symptoms. Thank you Dr. Steinberg!" (Added Apr 06)

NOTE: Readers report that this doctor requires a referral and thyroid-related diagnosis from your primary care doctor -- even if your insurance does not require a referral.

Indianapolis

Rosalind Leaming, MD, endocrinology, 5665 N Post Rd, Indianapolis IN 46216, 317-562-4044 A reader writes: "She listens to your symptoms, pays attention to current lab values, etc. and works with you to determine what your total problem is and respects a patient's input. She is helping me with a mixed thyroid picture, Hashimotos thyroiditis, goiter, toxic and nontoxic lesions. I had been very fatigued for at least 4 years and had always been told my TSH was "normal" when, in fact it was not. The right lobe of my thyroid had been enlarged for several years, but since the TSH was normal, it was not investigated further. She has helped me a great deal!!" (Added: June 2004)

Indianapolis

Dr. Nancy Stirling, Family Practice, 3725 Kentucky Ave., Indianapolis IN, , Phone: 1-317-856-2300, A reader writes: "My friend sees this Dr. and asked me to recommend her. I plan to switch to her for my next visit. My friend was diagnosed with thyroid disease by Dr. Stirling who automatically put her on Armour and has also tested her T3 and T4's. This Dr has a thyroid condition herself and listens to my friends symptoms and even calls her at home to check on her." (Added: Dec. 04)

Another fan:
"After searching for a Dr. that would actually listen to me rather than writing my symptoms off as "just anxiety or depression" or "Something I was just simply going to have to learn to live with" I looked on the Top Thyroid Doc forum and I will forever be grateful for the person who recommended Dr. Nancy Stirling on there. She is my 3rd Dr. of my search and I believe I have truly found someone who is going to make me well again. After hearing all the pieces of my story she immediately wrote me an order to test all of things I had read about in Mary's book and wanted so badly to be tested because I knew it was vital but, was refused and dismissed by other Dr's. She also explained to me how all of it was related and linked to the thyroid and took as much time with me as needed. She is wonderful and TRULY cares about her patients and their quest to feel well again. She only works 3 days per week and you can expect a very long wait once you are in there (2-3 hours) but, it is worth the wait. Anyone who has been searching for help would wait all day for her because you can't put a time on your health." (August 2007)

Another reader writes:
"I second this Dr. because she understands the Iodine, Adrenal support sometimes needed in thyroid disorders. She tests Free t 3 and 4 and is very nice." (August 2007)

A reader writes:
"She was very pleasant, easy going, good listener, wanted all the family history and listened about every ache, pain, and condition I had. She was concerned about how I felt and not just about numbers for the thyroid. She is willing to prescribe Armor and does test for T3 and T4. She and the person who did my intake were very good to work with me on insurance... making sure no pre-existing condition was listed on the papers for insurance. I took info on doing my own labs since my insurance won't pay for my pre-existing thyroid tests etc. I showed her the http://healthcheckusa.com/ info for the VIP Plus 2 test for 125.00 and she said "sure". Overall, I am totally ecstatic to have a Dr. who will listen and work with me on my health and costs." (Added October 2007)

I think she's the only Endo. in this area. I've been to her only a few times so far (it'll be on a more regular basis now that I've been diagnosed hypo. at my last visit), but I am very glad I was referred to her. She's very informative, knowledgeable, & nice. I would highly recommend her to anyone!" (Added 6/05)

Lafayette

Charles Turner, MD, Family practice 2433 S. Ninth St. Lafayette, IN 47909 765-471-1100 www.drturner.verizonsupersite.com. A Reader writes: "After being "blown off" by an endocrinologist (who basically said my labs were fine, even when they showed an excessively low level of cortisol, as well as low T3), I sought out Dr. Turner. He listened to me, and responded appropriately to my various symptoms. I am now on medicine for T3, T4, Cortisol (and DHEA, which was also low). I am beginning to feel human again, and am only sorry I waited so long to find someone who would partner with me regarding my health. He reads constantly, and is open to what I have to say." (Added 11/02)

Another reader recommends Dr. Turner
"After being turned away from the student health center with hypothyroid symptoms and a normal TSH in the presence of thyroid peroxidase antibodies, I sought out Dr. Turner because of the recommendation at this sight. He is very enlightened and I am now getting the treatment I need to feel better." (Added 6/03)

Another reader writes:
"I was so tired all the time and gaining weight in spite of diet and exercise. I asked my doctor to check my thyroid. she said my labs were "normal". When I found Dr. Turner he said he would treat "me" not my labs. Now my energy is way up and I have stopped gaining weight. I hope this will help me actually lose some weight." (August 2007)

La Porte

Dr David S. Mendelowitz, M.D. 1300 State Street, Suite 2C, La Porte, IN 46350, 219-325-0152. A reader writes: "Dr David Mendelowitz is the best Doctor I have ever been to. He does not sugar coat anything and explains everything thoroughly. He and his staff are very professional and caring. As well as the Nursing staff at the LaPorte hospital where my surgery was performed. I had a very large goiter and Dr.Mendelowitz removed it. My results have been excellent with very little scaring. I am able to Breathe and swallow now with ease. He listened and got results. Very good Surgeon." (October 2006).

Mishawaka

Donald Michael, MD, PC, 211 E. Mishawaka Avenue, Mishawaka, IN 46545 574-254-0103 fax (574) 254-0119, www.dmichaelmd.com, dmichaelmd@aol.com

Note: Dr. Michael does not accept insurance, and his appointment fees can be costly and may not be covered all or in part by your insurance when you submit them, so call ahead to find out anticipated costs. (Added 10/05)

A reader writes:
Dr. Michael is the only doctor I have ever met that TOOK THE TIME to seriously evaluate my situation. After being misdiagnosed with MS, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Depression, he found I have thyroiditis. This is also the probable cause of my Carpel Tunnel Syndrome, not to mention female problems that led me to surgeries I probably could have avoided. He also found other problems I didn't know existed. He is so thorough, giving me documentation for each item he brought to my attention. I was ALLOWED to spend nearly three hours with him. I left our first visit feeling that I will get my life back after 10 years of discomfort. In a conversation previous to our first visit, I spoke of my eight year old boy having some of my symptoms. He ordered testing for him too, and showed me at my visit that they had come back abnormal as well. So, he is very possibly stopping my son from taking the same road through life that I did. I am so forever grateful. Please don't hesitate to call if you have any doubts about your current physician. His front office help is outstanding and takes the time to relieve your anxieties while she talks to you over the phone. And, when they say they will call you back....they do! He believes in you, how can you not believe in him?"

Another reader recommends Dr. Michael...
Donald Michael, Psychiatrist, Neurologist, 328 N. Michigan Street, South Bend, 46601. A reader writes: "I found Dr. Michael's name through this Top Doc Site. I was at the mercy of a doctor who believed that because my TSH became normal after treating me with lose dose Levoxyl there was nothing else wrong with me. I am pre-menopausal -a time when hypothyroid seems to make it's appearance and found myself blaming the sudden weight gain, depression and appetite changes along with a gazillion other symptoms on this time in my life. I was getting nowhere with my former doctor and becoming desperate to feel better. I would recommend Dr. Michael to anyone without hesitation because he really cares about his patients. He is always accessible by phone, pager, or e-mail. His receptionist, Nancy is almost as knowledgeable about treatments and both she and Dr. Michael are ready to talk with you at any time about problems, questions, fears, etc. I've learned that although common medical practice says this is an easy disease to treat it takes rather a long time to get back up to speed. Dr Michael does not give up on his patients and is willing to travel all avenues to get you to feel better."

Another fan of Dr. Michael. . .
A reader writes: "I found Dr. Donald Michael last August. He is a psychiatrist/neurologist in South Bend, IN. I was looking for a psychiatrist because I have been treated for severe depression for the last eleven years, and my psychiatrist retired. After several months search, Dr. Michael was recommended by the local Mental Health Association. The first thing he did was to order lab tests - including antithyroid antibodies. Although my T3 and T4 results indicated hyperthyroidism, a radioactive scan and antibody tests showed that I have autoimmune thyroiditis. Dr. Michael has proven to be very knowledgeable and understanding. He listens, INTENTLY, and is uncommonly aware of women's issues with hormonal therapy. He tells me that 85% of his practice now deals with thyroid and/or hormone therapy. I saw three other psychiatrists and four therapists before finding Dr. Michael. I was hospitalized for depression because I was suicidal. Now I have taken NO antidepressants since August, and the depression is mild, at best. Also, the thirty some symptoms of hypothyroidism that I had have diminished or disappeared. I hope the fact that Dr. Michael is a psychiatrist will not deter anyone from seeing him. He has specialized in thyroid conditions as he found more and more patients who had this problem. Also, he is the first to point out that he used to be one of those doctors who dismissed what patients said - and now he is very open to the patients' input."

Another patient of Dr. Michael:
"Dr. Michael is the best! He is always courteous, available (he actually returns your calls in person!) and open to suggestions; he treats his patients like human beings, with respect and dignity. He truly cares for his patients. He is truly the best physician you will find in Indiana for diagnosis and treatment of thyroid/hormonal diseases."

One more reader recommends Dr. Michael:
"I traveled from Los Angeles to South Bend to see Dr. Michael. He has an extraordinary breadth of knowledge. This combined with his great compassion and his own experiences make him an extraordinary doctor. He sees the patient in his/her totality, and is not confined to lab results." (Added 11/02)

Here is Dr. Michael's own input. . . .
"Please add me to your list of docs treating patients with thyroid problems and listening to then instead of lab slips. I use Armour as well as Levoxyl, and most of my practice is thyroid or natural hormone replacement. If there is an afterlife, I hope that this turns out to be enough penance for when I listened to things other than my patients or put women on antidepressants or sleeping pills without checking thyroid and estrogen. Don Michael, M.D., P.C., Psychiatrist-Neurologist, 328 N. Michigan Street, South Bend, IN 46601, (219) 287-6010, mDJMike666@aol.com."

Another recommendation:
"I know you get tons of e-mails but I have a great doc and he's already on the top doc list-Dr. Donald Michael in South Bend Indiana! He isn't making even one of these mistakes! Yay! Thanks for all your wisdom! You've been lots of help!" (June 2006)

Another fan writes:
"Dr. Michael SAVED MY LIFE! I feel if I had not found him when I did I would be either dead or on my way. I was miserable and went from Dr. to Dr. because though I was within the"normal range" (tsh) and on levothyroxine, I felt worse then I had ever in my life. Despite being very thin all my life even right after I had my three kids and exercising consistently while watching my diet strictly I gained 90lbs in 18 months. My former Dr. said I must be eating too much and not exercising enough. I was so angry and frustrated that I did not want to live. I had debilitating fatigue and constant dizziness. I was at absolute wits end. I felt like I was dying. My symptoms ran the gamut including requiring about 18 hours sleep a day. Caring for my family became impossible. I found Dr. Donald Michael on a few websites like this one and I actually had some hope for the first time in a long time. My first appointment was on May 1st, 2008. Dr. Mike did a battery of tests as well as took the time to listen to me. He ordered blood work and we set up a second app. to follow-up. Though my visit was strictly diagnostic in nature just having a Dr. take me seriously for the first time was like a weight off my shoulders. At the follow-up I discovered this life altering ordeal was not all in my head! I was elated! I had very fatigued adrenals, over the countable amount of thyroid antibodies, I was very low in vit. D, and high amounts of reverse T3. This was just a few among many abnormal markers. Dr. Mike put me on a regimen of Cortisol, T3 (Compounded extended release), Vit D and a few other needed items. Dr. Mike Diagnosed me with Wilson's Temp. Syndrome and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, which is ironic because I researched my symptoms AND CAME UP WITH THIS SAME GUESS! (I told my prior Dr. about my suspicions and he pretty much blew me off and put me on an antidepressant.) I was amazed that a simple blood test might have proven this and I finally found a Dr. who took the time to believe me and SAVE ME. I started to feel better within a week, not to being myself yet, but improved. By mid July I had lost 20lbs and I was only requiring about 12 hours of sleep a day. I still had some dizziness but it was less frequent. By Oct. I had normal temps and had lost a total of 35lbs. I was sleeping a lot less and for once in years I was not dizzy! It is January now and though I am not completely healed I am 100% better. I've lost 50lbs with little to no effort and I am very optimistic that at the 1 year point I will be back to myself. If you can relate to the description of my horrible debilitating ordeal and you are desperate, as I was, please call Dr. Mike he will save your life as he did mine. Dr. Mike is the most caring, knowledgeable, and competent Dr. I have ever met. I owe getting my life back to him. If you want yours back Dr. Mike is the Dr. for the job. He is capable and unlike other Docs willing to find your cure." (March 2009)

A reader writes:
"I've been seeing Dr. Michael for a year and a half and he has gotten me in better condition than any of the other drs. I've seen. Still have an on-going battle but at least he listens. Thought I should update his new location since he moved from the previous location that you have listed." (March 2009)

Mishawaka

Dr. Janice Smith, General practice/internist/primary care, Holistic/complementary/alternative MD, Alternatives Medical Center 215 East Mishawaka Avenue, Mishawaka, Indiana , 574-258-1111

"Dr. Smith is wonderful. Not only is she knowledgeable about thyroid problems (she has hypothyroidism herself) but she also has a refreshing perspective on medicine in general. She formerly was an doctor in an inner city ER in Chicago for several years. She said she became tired of treating patient symptoms which is the focus of the current medical community. She is interested in curing patients. She is respectful, very knowledgeable about thyroid and other autoimmune disorders and continually stays current on new alternative treatment options that come up. Here is the best news - she is SO affordable! Her first session is $90 and she spends anywhere from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours or more with the patient! Her follow-up fees are $54 an office visit which can run up to 1/2 hour to an hour or more as needed. She is thorough, professional and compassionate. Her office does not bill your insurance company. As an out of network provider, you need to check your plan to see if you can be reimbursed. My plan does reimburse a portion of my costs to see her. I cannot recommend her highly enough. I have searched for a doctor for years who does not have the typical "arrogance" of many doctors out there. Dr. Smith is a doctor who believes that my health and our care of it should be a partnership in every way. I am so grateful to have found her. I have been referring all of my friends and clients to her."(August 2007)

Another reader writes:
"Thanks to the other reviewer here who led me to Dr. Smith. All I can say is - Wow! This was the best experience I've had with a physician; ever. She is knowledgeable, straightforward, and innovative. You know the stuff that you felt you couldn't share with the other doctors for fear of scrutiny? - well, it's OK to talk to her. She's not judgmental, and shares a lot of her personal experiences. She is one of us! She is trying hard to keep her prices reasonable so regular folks can actually afford to see her. The office is not fancy, which I appreciate. I know I'm not being over-charged to pay for marble floors or high end furniture. Her office manager is very nice. I've been telling everyone about her. I walked away with so much information - she actually wants to give you the tools to take care of yourself. I told her that I'd add my comments to the list (I brought it up, don't think it matters to her), but - she deserves it. I will never be the same again - and that is a good thing. Can't thank her enough, but I'm trying by spreading the word." (May 2008)

A reader writes:
Dr. Janice Smith is nothing short of a miracle worker to us. She determined my son's hypo-thyroid condition and started him on non-radioactive iodine and within 2 weeks you would have never known he had any illness. She listens very attentively and you can tell she really cares. Especially considering how much time she took with my family. We live an hour away from her office and it was well worth the trip." Muncie

C. Kurt Alexander, Endocrinology, 1910 West Royale Court, Muncie, IN 47304, 765-289-1011, "Dr. Alexander diagnosed me with auto-immune thyroid disease after other doctors had told me my thyroid levels were fine. He is never in a hurry when I have an appointment, and always makes sure I am informed about my test results and diagnosis. He is a kind, sensitive doctor who cares about his patients." (Added 4/04)

Note: This doctor requires a referral from your family doctor, even if it is not required by your insurance.

A reader writes:
"I was Dr. Ayers patient when she was at a former clinic on the south side of Indianapolis, and followed her when she moved . She is always patient, listens to my symptoms and is encouraging. When my thyroid was treated with RAI and we were attempting to get me under control, she would frequently call me at home to see how I was doing. She's great! I highly recommend her for anyone in the Indianapolis area who is experiencing thyroid problems."

Another patient of Dr. Ayres:
"Dr. Ayres is patient and caring. She personally calls me to tell me my test resyults. A glucose test came back high and she wanted to know if it was a random check or a fasting. If it was fasting then I needed to let her know. She is down-to-earth. We're still working on shrinking my nodule goiters. She's a keeper. I hope my new insurance will accept her!"

Another fan:
"On my first trip to see Dr. Ayres she I could tell that she was a caring person. she took the time to listen to how I felt, not only what the numbers said. I live about 100 miles from her office but she's worth the drive." (Added 6/02)

Valparaiso

Osteopathic, 1700 Pointe Dr., Valparaiso, IN 46383, 219-462-6192, "Dr. Manakas was the ONLY doctor that helped me function again after being diagnosed with Hashimotos, Sjogren's, and menopause. He prescribed the right medications to help me to feel 'normal' again, and continues to watch my progress, adjusting meds if needed. He is an understanding, excellent physician with remarkable capabilities to listen and to treat complex cases like mine. I thank God for leading me to this wonderful doctor!" (Added Dec. 04)

Another reader writes:
"Dr. Manakas is very knowledgeable with thyroid issues. I tried for over four years to get better since being diagnosed wit Hashimotos. I saw several doctors, tried several diets, went on many vitamins and minerals, and tried several medications. To no avail, not even on high amounts, nothing seemed to work. I was still showing slow metabolic responses, as well as other unresolved hypo symptoms. But Dr. Manakas would go beyond my blood results and agreed that I had cellular resistance. He treated me according to how I felt, and gave very in depth physical exams. He did this every month until I was on enough medication to feel normal. I can't believe the difference in my life, and the difference T3 has made. He saved my life. Dr. Manakas is a caring and understanding person, and listens with an intensity you would never expect."
