THYROID TOP DOCTORS DIRECTORY The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care. Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. The doctor may be brilliant and innovative, but have a terrible bedside manner. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment. Please let me know if you have feedback -- positive or negative -- about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your "top" doctor. Thanks! -- Mary |

Albany Samer El-Deiry Endocrinology The Endocrine Group 1365 Washington
Ave., Suite 300, Albany, NY 12206 518-489-4704 www.theendocrinegroup.com A reader writes:
"Dr. El-Deiry was able to adjust my thyroid levels to make me feel better
than I did before Radioactive iodine RX. My 2nd endo. MD recommended
iodine Rx for Graves hyperthyroidism. My TSH jumped to 38 in a few weeks.
He was able to get my TSH in "normal range" but I never felt good. My
primary care Nurse Practitioner recommended Dr. El-Deiry and his group
(The Endocrine Group). I am now taking a T4/T3 combination and feel
great! I can't thank Dr. El-Deiry enough!!! Albany Dr. Mark L. Fruiterman -- no longer listed Albany Richard Ginsburg, M.D. Internist specializing in endocrinology Endocrinologist 614 Madison Ave, Albany, NY 12208 (518)436-4991 "Dr. Ginsburg listens," says one reader, "responds and keeps his skills and knowledge up-to-date. I was first referred to him nine years ago for a needle biopsy and he has since then managed my care for papillary carcinoma. He answers questions honestly, but supportively. He has an excellent referral network and the other specialists to whom he has referred me have all been eminently satisfactory. He returns calls. He is a Red Sox fan who is sympathetic to my predilection for the Chicago Cubs! I trust that he respects my rights and wishes as a medical consumer, that he will give me the best available information, then let me make the choices." everyone is an individual! Let me say as forthyroid, someone dear to
him has a thyroid problem so he does understand. He conveys to me that

Dr. Haque does not rush you out of his office and listens to your concerns and addresses them and explains in detail. My TSH fluctuates several times per year and he suggested that I try alternating 2 different dose which seems to be working for the past 6 mos. so far! (Added Apr 06) Hicksville, Long Island Edward Persuad of Medical Network of Long Island 516 937 7440 in Hicksville, Long Island, NY. A reader writes: "He not only treats allergies, but sensitivities to everything including hormones. No other doctor caught the fact that I was sensitive to t3 t4 and trh. After being treated for this, and numerous other things, my very complicated symptoms abated, something many doctors couldn't do to the extent that Edward has done. He's truly in this business to help people, not money hungry at all. He spends at least an hour each time I see him. Sometimes I spend $140 sometimes less, sometimes more depending on how many allergens I buy. He's treated my insomnia, cravings and constipation like no one else has. He uses something called immunology which is explained on http://www.allergychoices.com/allergies_oral_faq.asp. He treated all bacteria, fungi, food, vitamins, environment allergies and hormone imbalances etc. Please recommend this very innovative dr. He has a superb reputation." (Added 2/03) Huntington Dr. William Romero Huntington Atrium, 775 Park Avenue Suite 155,
Huntington
NY 11743, 631-549-4500, www.bariatricdoctor.com I highly recommend Dr.
William Romero. In the past I had been put on Synthroid but had become
symptomatic (gaining weight without any lifestyle/eating changes, sleeping
10-14 hours a day and still feeling exhausted, falling and tripping
so much that moving around was almost a safety hazard . . . etc). After
spending an hour with Dr. Romero on my first visit, I felt like I had
a new lease on life with him as my cheering section. He also prescribed
a combination of Armour and Synthroid and a well balanced diet and exercise
program (it's a lifestyle change, folks!) . . . that was 3 weeks ago.
I just returned from a 2 week European vacation (historically, I gain
about 1 pound per day when I go on vacation despite exercising, watching
my diet and exploring the sights). When I weighed in at Dr. Romero's
office, I did not gain 14 pounds, but instead maintained my weight like
a normal, active person! In Europe, I was also able to explore the sights
(including climbing up to the Acropolis, walking up and down stairs
in Venice, and navigating over many cobblestone walkways) WITH ENERGY
AND WITHOUT TRIPPING! I am now able to sleep a solid 8 hours and wake
up feeling refreshed!! My thinking is clearer and I am not as forgetful
and I used to be. If you live in the LI area and are tired of doctors
who tell you that you overeat, overwork, don't exercise enough or everything
is in your head, you must make an appointment with Dr. Romero. After
28 years, I feel reborn! Jackson Heights Dr. Nuzhat Faridi -- no longer listed Lawrence Dr. Irene Zide, Endocrinology-Metabolism, 290 Central Ave. Suite 202, Lawrence, NY 22559, 1-516-371-0517. A reader writes: "She really cares about her patients. She takes the time to explain everything and will never let you leave unless you understand what she wants to do. She is very devoted to caring for her patients and not anyone is a number or an insurance co-payment. She is more interested in you than making money. I cannot say enough of the caring way she treated me and the time she spent with me explaining everything about my thyroid problem. This doctor is one of the best of the best." (Added 10/05) Lynbrook Maria Teresa Deiperine, MD -- no longer listed (October 2007) Malone Dr. Gerald W. Cahill, General Practice, 16 Fourth St. Malone, NY 12953 518 483-8990. A reader shares, "I was on Armour thyroid since having RAI therapy in 1975 through an endocrinologist in Buffalo, New York. I relocated to Malone and upon Dr. Cahill’s suggestion discontinued that and tried Synthroid and all of its derivatives. I was miserable. Dr. Cahill wasn’t sold on Armour but allowed me to go back on it and since then has increased it to more than I was getting because I am on Premarin and am post menopausal. It is wonderful that I have a doctor that will listen to me and know that lab results are not the only criteria for prescribing medications. He genuinely cares for each individual patient and listens to women." Manhattan See New York City Massapequa Steven L Osani -- no longer listed (October 2007) Massapequa (Nassau County) and Rego Park Dr. Stella Ilyayeva, Endocrinologist, 4150 Sunrise Highway, Massapequa,
NY 11758. (516) 541-1721. A reader praises Dr. Ilyayeva, "I went to
several doctors, she was the only one who agreed a 4.3 TSH was too high
for me even though the lab results say it was normal!. Listened to my
symptoms too, not just the lab results! Very nice and understanding!
Great Doctor!" Middletown Dr. Ediale, Endocrinology, 2 Edgewater Dr., Middletown, 10940,
845-342-4774.
"He takes time to listen to you about your symptoms, you never feel
rushed and he does a thorough examination." (added 1/04) Middletown Dr. Laurence Gordon, ENT Surgeon, 674 East Main Street, Middletown, NY 10940, 845-343-0666. A reader writes: "He performed a complete thyroidectomy on me due to a suspected cancer. Biopsies were not clear about the cancer until after the surgery. He listed to my thoughts and feelings about the partial versus total thyroidectomy and followed my wished to have it completely removed when the biopsy during surgery was unclear. A bonus that I later found out is that he is trained in cosmetic surgery as well. My scar looks beautiful and blends in more every day. He has been following my thyroid levels for more than a year now because my energy levels have not responded in spite of normal or even below normal TSH tests. He is very patient and willing to tweak the meds until we get it right. He is very kind, compassionate, open to the patient's perspective, and completely worth the 1 hour drive I make to see him every 6 weeks. He is committed to get me feeling my best." (June 2006) Newburgh Elizabeth Kaminska MD, Endocrinology, 372 Fullerton Ave Suite 5,

New Hyde Park Dr. Harvey Katzeff Endocrinology Long Island Jewish Medical Center 400 Lakeville Rd New Hyde Park, NY 516-465-5460 A reader writes: "I was diagnosed with Graves' disease under the care of another endocrinologist who didn't do very well with my case. I was over-medicated which resulted a weight gain of 18lbs within 2 weeks and couldn't seem to reasonably manage my weight. Once recommended to Dr. Katzeff, my meds were adjusted properly and a battery of tests was performed to find out more specifically what I was up against. The first MD just took basic blood work and prescribed meds. After the new endo ran the tests, it was discovered that prescribing meds would not solve my problem. Apparently the Graves' was a little more sensitive than your classic case. Dr. Katzeff worked feverishly to get me better and was constantly doing research regarding my situation. He was always available for any questions I had and always treated me in the utmost professional and caring manner. When it was finally decided to have a total thyroidectomy (rare for my circumstances) I was put in the hands of one of the very best surgeons who also took a lot of care with my case. My case has been documented in medical journals due to unusual circumstances associated with my Graves disease. Dr. Katzeff does not believe in alternative meds nor will he treat the depression/ADHD symptoms with MAOI's, Valium, etc. He treats the physical condition at hand. I have spoken with many thyroid patients that have been described with the aforementioned drugs. I cannot say enough kind things about Dr. Katzeff, his knowledge and persistence has given me my life back...I am happy to share with you that after overcoming this battle, I have gotten married and am now expecting my first child. I would not have been able to accomplish either one with ongoing Graves' disease." (Added 11/02) New Hyde Park David Myssiorek, Thyroid Cancer specialist. LIJ Medical Center Lakeville

One reader describes Dr. Kligler’s approach: "The Center, while it offers traditional western medical treatment, also offers TCM, acupuncture, massage therapy. Dr. Kligler's approach is holistic in nature. On my 1st visit he sat with me for a good hour taking down my entire history, a joy in this new medical world of 3-minute, in-and-out consultations. Another plus: he is not at all threatened by the internet and patients who do their own research. Though he doesn't specialize in endocrinology I found his explanations of my problems infinitely more comprehensive and comprehensible than any of the specialists I have talked to." The New York Thyroid Center at Columbia Presbyterian and their staff take an innovative and individual approach to thyroid surgery. Dr. Inabnet performed a left lobectomy (to remove a thyroid nodule) rather than removing the entire thyroid. Even though the nodule was malignant, in my case, because the cancer was well contained, our joint decision was to leave the remainder of my thyroid intact. I was spared having to undergo radioactive iodine treatment but will have to have periodic sonograms and bloodwork to monitor potential return of the cancer. as hypothyroid by a general MD in 1994 with a TSH of 38. I really didn't
have any problems that I knew of - a bit tired maybe - but the doctor
assured me that taking Synthroid would improve my life. After 3 to 4
years of seeing several different doctors - and increasing my Synthroid
to INSANELY high levels (because my TSH wasn't responding) I was gaining
weight, extremely depressed and thinking that I was insane. Now I had
problems. I found Dr. Zwickler who began to give me Cytomel - because
he listened to how I was feeling and judged his decision on how my body
was reacting and appearing - not just on what the blood tests read.
After a few months, under careful attention and dosage adjustments,
I felt better than I ever had - lost weight - was spunky and NO LONGER
DEPRESSED. Then I made a big mistake, I moved and tried a new doctor
for convenience. He convinced me that the Synthroid was never to blame,
put me back on it, and when I sunk back into depression, suggested Zoloft.
3 months and 20 lbs gained - distraught - I called upon Dr. Zwickler
who was SO SUPPORTIVE. I was embarrassed because I left and went to
someone new - but he helped me with no attitude and returned every one
of my frantic phone calls. Now - after seeing him again for a few months,
my moods are back to my normal happy self, my weight stabilized and
I am starting to lose. I feel GREAT. He is truly a kind, intelligent,
and wonderful doctor and I think that he is THE best out there. I drive
over an hour each way to see him and I encourage everyone to help themselves
and talk to him if you are having problems." (added 1/04) Westbury/Nassau County "I've had a new doctor for the last 2 months and would like to share his info. I had been extremely fatigued for more than a year. In April it got to the point where I had to structure my work day around my naps (luckily I have a very flexible schedule). I was sleeping over 4 hours in the day as well as 10 hrs or so at night. I made the rounds of doctors & thyroid testing and was told repeatedly I was in the "normal" range and should "Just exercise more". This advice, after having suspended my workout schedule of 10 years in order to nap. I was desperate when I called my uncle for the name of his "alternative" doctor. After a week of homeopathic meds and nutritional supplements I no longer needed a nap and have been productive every day since then, from 7am to 11pm without naps. I am alert and have felt great for 2 months now. The doctor is Stavely Yurkovsky, MD. in Nassau County, NY. His address is Madison St., Westbury, NY 11590. Phone is 516-333-2929. Fax is 334-5926.
