Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?
Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.
* The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
* The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
* The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
* Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.
* Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.

Amarillo
Dr. Ken M. Brantley, MD PHD PA, Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1215
Coulter Suite M, Amarillo Tx 79106, (806) 354-0895. "Dr. Brantley listens to what you say and when
he asks how you are, he REALLY means it. He prescribes Synthroid first to see if a patient is one of the
90% that do well on it, but if they don't he WILL prescribe Armour and will work with you until you
feel well."
Another reader adds:
"Finally, a doctor who does not just rely on thyroid tests but listens to you and learns that in your family
the tests are not accurate. After years of searching for a doctor that will not make you feel mentally ill,
someone sees your goiter and says, 'Yes, you have a thyroid problem' and helps you." (Added 11/02)
A reader writes:
"Dr. Brantley is genuinely concerned with helping
you feel better. He's the first specialist that has actually helped me with my hypothyroid problem. God
Bless Him!!! You won't go wrong with this doc!! " (Added: Dec. 04)
Amarillo
Dr. Ben Chavez, MD, Internal Medicine, 3501 S. Soncy Rd., Ste. 134,
Amarillo, TX 79119, 806-331-2400. A reader writes:
"Dr. Chavez is one of the most caring physician's I've ever met (& I've been in the
medical industry for 30 years!). I was having severe symptoms of grave's disease & he listened, took the
time to make me feel like I mattered. He immediately tested me for grave's disease & started treatment
with PTU. When I didn't want to undergo ablation, he understood. I weighed the pros & cons of the
available treatments & decided to continue PTU along with Toprol XL for tachycardia. My thyroid levels
have been normal for over 2 years now with no symptoms whatsoever. My blood counts & thyroid levels
have all been normal to this day. I have since moved to OK & every doctor I talk to here won't even
consider "allowing" me to continue with my current regimen. All they will consider is ablation. I will
continue to drive 6 hours to see Dr. Chavez because he considers every patient as a complete person &
doesn't feel that his way is the only way. He considers what options are best
for that patient." (Added Apr 06)
Arlington
Dr. Charles Hamel, ENT, 4412 Matlock Ste 300, TX 76018, 817-468-7755.
A reader writes:
"Dr. Hamel really listens to his patients and encourages you to be an active participant in your treatment.
He treats the whole patient, not just the lab work numbers. His office staff is wonderful. I have never
had a problem with getting return calls. Marie is the best! This office practices a good balance of
traditional and complementary medicine. This doctor works with you to get to the bottom of whatever
is wrong, which is refreshing. I never feel rushed in my visits and both he and his nurse take the time
to explain concepts thoroughly. Some treatment options may not be covered by traditional insurance, but
it is well worth the investment to your health. Dr. Hamel works with all types of thyroid medications (he
is not biased to just offering Synthroid)." (Added 6/05)
A reader writes:
"Totally changed my life, mostly by fixing what 10 other
doctors said was "not" low thyroid. Always has an answer or suggestion
for me. Personable and very, very awesome!" (Added June 2005)

TX 78759, 512-343-6223/512-343-0727, www.austinintegrativemedicine.com. A reader describes Dr. Manzanero
as "the most brilliant doctor I know in the Austin area. He is very knowledgeable about thyroid disease
and how to treat it. He is very caring and very patient and meets all the requirements to be listed as a
Top Doc."
Another reader likes Dr. Manzanero:
"I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s in 1987 while pregnant with my second child. I took Synthroid
exactly as my endocrinologist recommended until 1998. In those 11 years I had gained over 50 pounds
(yes, I exercised regularly), had Epstein Barr Virus (awful fatigue and more), had major depression for
about the last three years before changing to Armour (yes, I tried all the anti-this’s and the anti-that’s
for the depression) I had no feelings one way or the other. Yuck. He changed my thyroid med to Armour
and recommended the use of a progesterone cream. He had me check my morning auxiliary (armpit)
temperature (no other doctor told me there were other hypothyroid symptoms to watch for. He did all
the blood tests plus listened to all that I had to say about how "I" felt. I have been in the healthcare field
for as many years as I’ve been hypothyroid. And it is refreshing to be treated as a patient not a lab
value! I must add he is extremely busy but very good!"
Still more praise:
This doctor, writes a reader, is "Awesome!" He, "Listens, really listens, cares about patient, not just lab
values, is knowledgeable of latest research, and gives incredible emotional support."
Still more praise:
"I've only spent an hour with him and am on my second week of Armour, so I have no results yet, but
I do feel that he answered my questions and addressed concerns far better than the OB/GYN who initially
diagnosed me and said ‘just take Synthroid and you'll be fine in 6 weeks.’"
Another reader:
"Knows his stuff and REALLY listens" (Added 6/02)

He is patient and takes all the time necessary to fully educate his patients about their thyroid problems."
(Added 6/03)
Another reader recommends Dr. Rosendahl:
"I was very fortunate to find Dr. Rosendahl and travel to Austin to have my surgery done. He was so
nice, and answered all our questions and then some. Also, we knew he was very competent and skillful.
His secretary also was so nice in helping us with where to stay etc. What could have been a very stressful
time was actually made pleasant by their kindness! Too bad there aren't more doctors like Dr.
Rosendahl." (added 1/04)
More praise from a reader for Dr. Rosendahl:
"He is very informative, caring, experienced, and has a great sense of humor along with it!" (added 1/04)
Yet another reader writes:
"Dr. Rosendahl takes the time to explain your diagnosis, treatment, & options. He makes a point to treat
you like an individual, not a lab test. He's intelligent, but still caring. I'd recommend him to anyone."
(Added 6/05)
A reader writes:
"Dr. Rosendahl is very helpful and caring. He truly listens and works to develop a relationship with his patients. I would highly recommend him. Even though he does not take insurance he is well worth it if you want a knowledgeable and caring doctor. " (Added Dec. 2006)

Dr. Peter Scholl, Surgeon, Austin, Texas. A reader writes: "I interviewed a number of surgeons for my thyroidectomy. I had a very large goiter and was miserable and undiagnosed for years. Dr. Scholl was very skilled when he removed my thyroid. I had a scratchy voice for one day only and have healed up so nicely post surgery. I felt he was so competent and concise. I know he was removed over 1400 thyroids and seen it all. He was recommended by everyone and is the principal in the practice with Dr. Zapalac."

From a pair of readers in Texas... "Good to hear from you! We are doing

His nurse Sue is also very nice and helpful!"

Robert Morgan, Natural Hormone Replacement, 3430 Fannin, Beaumont, Texas 77701, 409-813-2761, www.beaumontwellness.com. A reader writes: "Mr. Morgan is absolutely terrific. He has given me my life back. I have been to many "specialist" who tried to help me but I never got better. I was always tired, never had any energy. My hair was falling out, my skin was dry, I could not focus or concentrate. Doctor after doctor tried my on synthroid, adjusted my doses and actually made me feel worse. Mr Morgan did a thorough history, checked my thyroid levels and found that my T3 was low. He explained placed me on Armour thyroid and within a month I felt like a new person. I brought my mother in to see him because she was having really bad hot-flashes and night sweats. She was driving the family crazy! He gave her some bio-identical hormones and fixed her too. My entire family wish to thank him for everything. He has changed our lives." (June 2006)
A reader writes:
"Robert Morgan at Beaumont Health and Wellness Clinic was the first person to ever treat me for thyroid problems even though I've suffered from symptoms since I was in my twenties. My mother and brother have had thyroid problems so I would get mine checked every year and doctors would tell me it was normal even though I felt it wasn't. I'm 44 yrs. old and since Robert Morgan started me on Synthroid, I feel so much better. I have more energy, I sleep better at night and the irregular heart-beat I've had since I was in my twenties is normal now. He's treating my mother with the bio-identical hormones and she hasn't felt as good as she does now in 30 years. I'm so glad someone finally listens to you instead of telling you you're fine and sending you on your way. What a Godsend!!!" (Added Dec. 2006)

Aydin Ozan, General practice/internist/primary care, 1803 N. Main, Boerne TX, 78006, 830.816.2312. A reader writes: "Dr. Ozan is only in Boerne now, but is a great doctor, diagnosed my hypothyroidism. Worth the 20 mile drive from San Antonio!!! I had been to 3 other doctors before, as I suspected Hypothyroid." (August 2007)
A reader writes:
"I searched high and low, and found a good internal med doctor, who believes in natural medicine, and was patient with me, and suggested your books and several others about hormones and eating right. He is very sincere about patient care and i just wanted to hug him. he listened to everything i said, and even offered armor and a good endo and compounding pharmacy, and it has changed my life, and helped me so much, and slowly i am getting to what i would call back to normal. the office was clean and the nurses were friendly and kind. And did not mind giving me a copy of my test results, and he explained all the numbers to me and what they mean, and where i was low on hormones,or anything else related to my well being. i highly recommend this doctor,i live in San Antonio but it's worth the drive to see him." symptoms to determine thyroid problems, does prescribe Armour and uses blood tests only to confirm
that the levels agree with what he is observing. He alerted me to my low thyroid and had to do some
convincing to get me to try it. But he was right and I feel much better and will go with this Doctor as
long as I can." (Added 6/05) Burleson

symptoms of hypothyroidism for about 1 1/2 years. After seeing a "recommended"
doctor (Dr. Mair) who basically told me I was getting old and fat, and
a surgeon who told me I was depressed, I finally stumbled across the
very blessed Dr. Horseley. She actually looked me in the eye and LISTENED

Dr. David Chihal, Surgeon, 4325 N. Josey, Suite 101 (Trinity Hospital)
Carrollton, TX 75010 972-492-4006. A reader writes, "My gyno found a
huge lump in my thyroid and referred me to Dr. Chihal, a head and neck
surgeon. He is extremely knowledgeable about the thyroid and he explained
what a lump meant. He went into detail about what tests would need to
be performed, what they entailed, why they were necessary, and how surgery
would be carried out if I needed it. I had to have a lobectomy and he
did an amazing job. The incision is beautiful, I am lump free, and he
was wonderful throughout the entire experience. He is an excellent doctor
and surgeon. If I was going to have someone slit my throat again, I
would want it to be him." Clear Lake/Webster/Houston/Galveston
Dr. Lewis K. Clarke Clear Lake/Webster, Texas 17448 Hwy 3. Webster,
TX 77598 (281) 332-1755 I want to recommend Dr. Lewis K. Clarke. His
specialty is Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and his goal for me
was to get me feeling normal again so I function as a wife and mother.
He really spent time with me and listened to me. He has his M.D. and
also a Ph.D. in neurochemistry so he knows the science behind the medicine.
He had me read your book and told me I'd see myself in those pages.
He was right. Thanks for your book and all the help your giving us out
here.
(Note: Some readers report that this doctor can be costly, and does
not take insurance. Make sure that you know in advance what costs will
be for first visit, additional visits and lab work.) Corpus Christi
Dr. Jacqueline
Cohn, 1521 S. Staples, Suite 801, Corpus Christi, Texas 78404, phone:
361-888-5794, fax: 361-887-7032.
A reader writes: "My doctor Jacquelin Cohn is the greatest doctor! I
had a total hysterectomy at age 30. Had no idea that I was suffering
from hormone problems. After surgery systems got worse, weight gain,
PMS to the nth degree, retaining water and pretty much had the appearance
of being pregnant. Certainly made me angry when I had all those parts
removed already. I went for 4 years going from internist to internist,
practically every doctor in our town. Finally on a playground during
my youngest son's soccer practice another mother mentioned to me that
I should find a good endocrinologist. I had never heard of that type
of doctor before. I went to the yellow pages and at that time I found
2 and called the first one on the list! Lucky for me it was Dr. Cohn!
She took down a little information, asked a few questions and reassured
me, she could handle whatever problems I was having, it was just going
to take a little time. She ran a extensive blood work and discovered
my pituitary gland had problems, prolactin levels were high. Within
a year my weight was on its way down, my attitude came up out of the
depths of hades. I felt like I was sane after all. I LOVE MY DOCTOR,
SHE WORKS MIRACLES! and her attitude towards her patients makes all
the difference in the world!"
More praise for Dr. Cohn:
"When I initially went to see Dr. Cohn, I was under the care of another
physician who was, as I found out later, undermedicating me. I felt
terrible. Dr. Cohn was so informative and genuinely sincere I had to
contain myself from hugging her! She has been my endocrinologist for
about 5 years now and I’ve never felt better. She is always willing
to listen to any complaints or suggestions you have, regardless of how
small. I would recommend her to anyone looking for an endocrinologist."
Another reader recommends Dr. J. Cohn:
"After almost 2 yrs of misery with untreated Thyroid cancer and doctors
telling me it was "my age"[Hmm, I didn't know life was over at 41],
or stress, and I hope you are all reading this because you know who
you are, I found Dr. Cohn who gave me my life back, she listens, she
explains and she cares. Thanks to her I feel like my old self again,
something I thought would NEVER happen." (Added 11/02)
Another reader adds:
"I, too, was under the care of another endocrinologist when I found
Dr. Cohn. Over a 20-year period I had gone to 15 different doctors trying
to get answers to my health problems. One had, in fact, put me on thyroid
replacement, but at a dose that turned out to be half of what I needed.
The others had decided I was little more than a hypochondriac. Dr. Cohn
believed me when I told her about my symptoms. Instead of putting her
faith in my test results, which were always normal, she treated my symptoms.
Because of her the unknown thyroid cancer I had when I came to her was
found and removed. Thanks to Dr. Cohn's amazing care I am alive." (Added
11/02)
More praise from a reader for Dr. Cohn:
"Dr. Cohn was recommended to me at the time I was pregnant with my second
child. I see her on a regular basis for my thyroid condition as well
as my diabetes and high blood pressure. I also suffer from cellulitis
of both legs. She recommended to me to stay home from work on a more
permanent basis. I worked as a school teacher. She helped me with all
the paperwork so that I could stay home and elevate my legs so that
they would not get swollen and infected. That was a year and a half
ago and I have not had any problems with swelling of the legs. This
has kept me out of hospitals. She sees me on a monthly basis to monitor
my condition and even takes time from her very busy schedule to call
her patients with their results from the lab. She explains everything
very thoroughly. All her patients are very lucky to have as their doctor."
(added 1/04)
A reader writes:
"I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia because of the never ending pain,
exhaustion, and weight gain. I had been to several doctors including
specialists in several fields for at least two years. After my first
visit with Dr. Cohn, she determined that they Synthroid was not good
for me, that I needed to take thyroid. I also have goiters which she
took the time to explain to me and generally made me feel a lot more
comfortable. Aside from being a genuinely nice lady, she has virtually
cured me! I can stop taking all those sleeping pills, pain pills, every
other kind of pill! And I'm back down to 125 lbs! Thank you, Dr. Cohn!"

Robert DeVries, MD, Family medicine physician, 214 368 6197, SW corner
of Preston and Forest. "A friendly and interesting fellow, he was a
researcher in endocrine and fertility issues who now does medicine in
private practice. He is hypothyroid himself, as is his wife, so he is
very current on the issue and sympathetic as well. His office manager/receptionist
is kinda wacky, but just let it slide. He listens well and uses quality

is a bit thick, but he has been in Texas for 30 years and speaks perfect

News endocrine list)
Another reader adds:
"A friendly and interesting fellow, he was a researcher in endocrine
and fertility issues who now does medicine in private practice. He is
hypothyroid himself, as is his wife, so he is very current on the issue
and sympathetic as well. His office manager/receptionist Debbie, is
very refreshing and in control of the office, she is a extremely capable
Manager, who usually has multiple tasks in process at once, she is very
friendly, you simply must visit with her and get to know her. Dr. DeVries
listens well and uses quality labs for his blood work. From the Netherlands
originally, his accent is still noticeable, but he has been in Texas
for 30 years and speaks perfect English. My condition is noticeably
improving whereas to last MD I went to (for a year) did not have any
success." (Added 11/02)
More praise from a reader for Dr. DeVries:
"After 13 yrs. of being ignored and told I had to live with the effects
of hypothyroid because a stupid piece of paper said my T4 was in normal
range, I have found this wonderful human who is a doctor that will treat
me as a person and not that piece of paper. He is a God send." (added
1/04)
Another fan:
"I was undiagnosed for 4 years. He completed a 90 minute health history and head to toe exam. He has
sure I had Hashimotos , but the blood tests revealed hypothyroidism. He is kind, compassionate, a good
listener, loves people and medicine. He believes you should listen to the patient because they know their
body." (Added 1/06)
More praise:
"Dr. DeVries is the one to go to in Dallas if you have Hashimoto's. Thyroid disease is his passion (he attends international endocrinology conferences). He diagnoses not only with blood tests but with the Heel Reflex Response used by physicians long before blood tests were available (If you're not getting enough thyroid in your system, there will be a subtle reduction in your foot's response to the mallet--just like the test ALL doctors do on your knee to see if your leg "kicks" in response). He will give you Synthroid samples to take, telling you to increase the dosage every two weeks until you start to feel symptoms of getting too much--rather than ONLY relying on blood tests. (He believes in prescribing Synthroid because of quality control issues with Armour and generics.) He also understands the complexities of T3 and T4 balance. After having to BEG my previous doctor for an increase in my 25mcg Synthroid prescription, I was relieved to find a doctor who takes my SYMPTOMS into account as well as my TSH level (now almost zero, which doesn't bother him in the least!). Dr. DeVries even increased me from 175 mcg to 200 mcg just to get my cholesterol level down some more. He orders a FULL range of blood tests, but takes most insurance plans. Though he's listed as a family practice physician, he doesn't do gynecological exams or examine young children, so you'll need to go elsewhere for those. But if you're infertile from hormonal (not physical) problems, I would recommend him over a reproductive endocrinologist." (October 2006)
More input:
I just want to give a great feedback on Dr. DeVries, I read the good feedbacks in this website but once I met him my life changed, no one understood my conditions as well as he does and I felt I was in good hands, after he examined me I gain strength I was able to do my shores at home. I have hypothyroidism and I feel weak depressed but after I met him I felt much much better. I definitely recommend him."(August 2007)
A reader writes:
"Robert A.C. DeVries, M.D., PhD., has been my internist and endocrinologist since 1992. Dr. DeVries is a highly compassionate practitioner who cares deeply about his patients. His "old world" medical schooling (he is from Holland and received his first medical degree from The University of Amsterdam) is most apparent in his approach to his patients. Dr. DeVries know medications/drugs better than some pharmacist because, as a medical doctor in Holland, he had to learn to compound medications for his patients who lived too far away from a chemist (pharmacy). He is a naturally affable man who can diagnose illness by talking to and LISTENING intently to his patients (something most doctors do NOT do), examining them and then, at least in my case, has been proven correct by empirical tests. Dr. DeVries tries to give samples of a medication as opposed to prescribing it to help the patient defray the cost of the drug, in case it does not work or is inappropriate. Once it is decided that the medication works, he will then write a proper scrip for the drug. Until fairly recently, whenever I was admitted to the hospital where he has physician rights, whether or not he was on call, he would come to visit me every evening in the hospital, look over my charts and reassure me as only he has ever been able to do. Pressing family matters have caused him to discontinue his hospital visits, however, he always refers his in-hospital patients to physicians he trust. So far, they have been extremely competent and reliable, though they don't have his personality or his gentle assurances. I have recommended him to many friends and acquaintances and, without exception, he has helped them all in finding out their problems. He is honest and forthright, and if he feels he cannot handle your particular medical problem, Dr. DeVries will refer you to another physician he knows and trust (quite often his own personal physicians). I cannot say enough about what a kind, caring pe" (Added October 2007)

"The endo I go to now has an office in Dallas. Yes she is costly, but
your life is invaluable! Marina Johnson is a gal who uses a wide range
of treatments - she uses herbs when called for and only escalates to
drugs when needed. She also uses only the best labs for testing. She
used them for what they are good at. My blood work goes to 4 or 5 places
depending on what she is testing for. Your erratic results may well
be a result of a bad lab. They are more common than we want to think.
If your insurance will do an 80/20 split or 70/30 split, go see Dr.
j. She is gifted, intuitive and SKILLED at her work. She was also a
pharmacist prior to becoming an endo. Be sure to tell the office you
need a second opinion FAST. Have them get test results from your current
doc - that will save you some time. She is heavily booked. Even without
insurance that would cover her work, I would keep going to this woman
- she has been right about everything she thought was wrong with me
and I keep getting better each step of the way. The most recent epiphany
was that my silver fillings were poisoning me. We got them all out this
last month, using a dentist who takes the proper precautions for removing
them. Dr J then gave me a couple of mineral infusions to help flush
the mercury out of me. The ugly metallic taste in my mouth is now gone
completely. It was gone as soon as the filings were out! I can drink
decaf now and enjoy it. The least expensive way to work with her is
to let her call the shots and do what she thinks needs to be done IMMEDIATELY.
I made her take the slow road and it cost a lot more - especially on
my health. I was really sick before we got to one of the major issues
and it just happened to be something she thought was wrong after reviewing
my health history at our first meeting. TRUST HER. Use a credit card,
empty your IRA - but use her." (Submission thanks to the Moonlady News

"I stand by my previous recommendation of Dr. Marina Johnson. The good
news is that she now has two offices, one in the mid-cities and the

in the area of medicine in which he practices, however we all know that
doesn't always make for a "good doctor" you would recommend to others.
Dr. Marynick has treated me with great respect during my diagnosis and
treatment of Graves Disease. When I came to him, I had lost 90 pounds
(in 6 months) and in great denial that something was seriously wrong
with me... little did I know that I was days away from the disease hitting
me very hard -- possibly losing my life at any day for the following
4-5 weeks. He has been a patient doctor, a teacher of the disease, a
comforter at many times. He has hand written me on a couple of occasions
following up and letting me know that he is thinking of me. He also
sent a short note telling me he was sorry that he was out of town when
I needed him one weekend - but he had a very good doctor on call for
him that I did speak with. He has taught me about this disease as well
as my husband, he has been medically on top of the problem for the past
6 weeks with a great confidence I would become well again. He has handed
me pieces of books to read, articles to read, and suggested books and
reviewed web sites so that I do not get bad information. He has been
open, honest, and to the point - at times the directness is exactly
what I needed to snap me into reality. On top of his wonderful qualities,
he has surrounded himself with a very well medically trained staff with
great compassion. You feel like an extension of that office and it is
not a scary place to come visit. When there is bad news (or good news
as I look back - they saved my life!) they are there with you until
you are okay %26 every question you have has been answered. I know Dr.
Marynick is only human - but to my family of 5 he has kept us together
and is one of our heroes!"
Another reader writes:
"Dr. Marynick takes the fear out of the unknown by providing conscientious and detailed information
about your condition. He was able to identify and help treat a brain tumor I have had. It's position and
location has caused me to miscarry on many occasions. He is thoughtful, considerate of your time and
expense, and works to thoroughly review medical history to determine the best approach for each patient.
I am thankful he was recommended to me." (Added 6/05) Dallas

Qing Jia, Endocrinologist, Garland, Texas, Phone/Fax: 972-494-6235
A reader writes: "Qing Jia, M.D. (pronounced "CHING GEE-ah") is a very compassionate young Chinese doctor who seriously cares about her patients. She speaks fluent English and there is NO problem in understanding her. She is located near Baylor Garland in Garland, Texas. I was referred to her by my dentist's wife who has had serious and life-threatening thyroid disease. Dr. Jia helped her tremendously and was highly recommended. On my first visit with Dr. Jia, she spent a considerable amount of time TALKING to me, LISTENING to me, getting my history, etc., and having all the proper lab tests run. I was diagnosed almost a year ago with Type 2 diabetes. Aside from my internist, Dr. Jia is the only doctor who has been willing to help and overlook my physical attributes to get to the core of the problem. She is very kind, very helpful and very, very understanding. Her attitude is one of sincere care about her patients and in helping them in any way she can with their problems. Dr. Jia is extremely careful to administer diabetes medications that do not interact with my current medications. Recently, I went in for blood/lab work and ended up feeling so bad, I asked if they could work me in and they did (which is almost unheard of). We are still in the "processing stage" (my term for it) in finding which medications work best for me. Dr. Jia's nurses are well-informed, friendly and they know their business. If I have a "problem," it's only that messages left for her do not seem to reach her (for unknown reasons) and the receptionist who answers the phone is not very helpful. Once you get past that, however, seeing Dr. Jia is well worth the trouble. I highly recommend Qing Jia, M.D." (Added October 2007)

Dr. Launius was the FIRST doc who really listened to me not just my

care doc refused to do further tests because my TSH were normal, EVEN though
lab was using old ranges. I am working with Dr Launius in adjusting my

"THE BEST THYROID DOC EVER, Don't even waste your time anywhere else. Definitely the best I have ever had. He has helped my mother and I so much. Very wise, and friendly doc, who will listen to you. Excellent bed side manner. My first appointment, he spent over an hour with my mother and I, describing what thyroid actually was. He Really genuinely cares, and that matters so much. My health is back, and feeling normal again. He diagnosed my mother as hypothyroid as well, after all her struggles with other doctors, telling her it wasn't her thyroid, and that her levels were NORMAL. Sound familiar??? Take a chance on him, I guarantee, you will not be sorry. He is a former pharmacist, and knows about medicines. Very affordable and well worth the trip!!"(August 2007)

I can already feel a difference (not as sluggish) He said it will be a few weeks before I really notice the results but he took the time to explain everything to me. Even with bronchitis he sits and draws and explains everything. He is also VERY affordable. Thanks Dr. L!" (August 2007)

"Two years ago, I decided I would just grow old in pain. I was finished with doctors and their opinions and drugs. Then, a friend convinced me to see Dr. Launius - just one more doctor. He must have spent an hour with me on the first visit asking questions and really listening to me. It was incredible. Although I had been faithfully taking Synthroid for many years, he said it was my thyroid and changed my prescription to Armor Thyroid. Within months, my brain began to return to me, and I was able to stop my migraine medication. It took two years to get it stable. I think this saved my "life". I've progressed well over the past couple of years, and I have more to do, but this was a great experience. I have recommended Dr. Launius to many!" (May 2008)

"After struggling with hypothyroidism and weight gain for years my 21 year old daughter went to see Dr. Lanius. I found him after reading on this site the great comments other patients made on this site. After her appointment she called me and said, "Mom this man is going to change my life!" And, he has. Her previous doctor didn't think she had much of a problem, and accused her of lying about how much she was eating. Dr. Lanius focusing on symptoms, actually said she needed 2,5 times the amount of medication she was taking for the past several years. Now my daughter is doing great. I decided to go see him myself because I had many of the same symptoms as my daughter. Yes, I am hypo as well and feeling great! He takes his time, he is patient and he REALLY talks to you to find out what is going on. He understands more than just thyroid as he was able to talk to me about chronic pain and menopause. If you are frustrated by other doctors who don't or won't understand or listen, see Dr. Lanius!" (May 2008)

A reader tells us, "Dr. Rasheed was recommended to me by the Director
of Nursing where I work. She was the first physician to really listen
to me regarding my perception of simply not being able to lose weight,
no matter what I tried. (One physician told me that he guessed I would
just live longer than most if there was a famine, with no practical
solutions whatsoever). After taking an extensive history from me, Dr.
Rasheed ordered more specialized and specific tests for my thyroid and
later diagnosed subclinical hypothyroidism. She began me on Armour thyroid,
and prescribed a very complete regime for healthy weight loss. This
includes almost daily aerobic exercise, drinking a great deal of water,
keeping a food diary, and eating 1000 calories or less a day. All of
these I had been doing for years (thinking that if I didn’t, it would
only make my gradual weight gain all the worse). The best I could do
is to maintain (or gain no more than one or two pounds a month)...I
did not lose. Now, with the appropriate treatment, I am losing weight
in a very healthy manner. I feel like I’ve been given a second chance
at living my life "normally," and feel very blessed. Dr. Rasheed continues
to meet with her patients on a regular basis, helping problem-solve
minor issues before they become major. Finally, Dr. Rasheed used to
be an anesthesiologist, but turned to this area of medicine because
it really interested her. She also has had to work on weight loss, and
has done very well. So she truly does understand the battle, and has
always treated me with kindness and respect." Lubbock

(806) 792-2815. A reader provides this information, "There are three
primary reasons that I believe Dr. Robinson should be added to the Top
Doctor list: 1) Expertise. Before becoming a medical doctor, Dr. Robinson
was a research scientist. He knows how to read research critically and
to separate "good" research from the others. He also continues to read
and to maintain his level of knowledge regarding the most current practices
in medicine. 2) Open-Mindedness. Dr. Robinson is very sincere about
helping his patients. He is a good listener and treats his patients
with respect. He is very open-minded regarding treatments that work.
3) Personal Interest. One of Dr. Robinson's first success stories regarding
hypothyroid conditions was his wife, who had suffered for years before
he took on her case. He seems to have a special interest in endocrine
and autoimmune issues."
Another patient writes:
"Dr. E. Steve Robinson-prescribes Armour and natural bio-equivalent

Reproductive hormones are his special area of expertise. He takes most
major PPO insurance (no HMO's) and is extremely good at making the insurance
companies pay. I and many others find it worth our while to fly in to
see him. He is willing to treat children with thyroid problems. (It
is hard to find a doc in Texas who will treat children with thyroid
disease.)" Lubbock
M.M. Bakdash, M.D., Endocrinologist, 806-793-8616. Dr. Bakdash truly
seems to care for his patients health and emotional well being. If you
call his office and have concerns he will get on the phone and talk
to you. This isn't unusual unless you consider the fact that he will
get on the phone even if he is busy with someone else at the time. He
encourages you to contact him with concerns and he seems to be compassionate
about his patients. I also think he is a very intelligent doctor. He
diagnosed a skin condition to my Graves disease that had stumped other
doctors/including dermatologists - for years. Lubbock

an endocrinologist, and none of them wanted to consider that I could possibly have a problem with
thyroid if my blood tests were normal. Finally, I found Dr. Pangle's website and emailed her about my
problems. I had an appointment with her about a week later and she is wonderful! Don't be deterred by
the fact that her clinic focuses on bariatrics (weight loss). If you are not interested in the weight loss
supplements, she will not even try to talk you into taking them. Dr. Pangle says that if you listen to a
patient long enough she/he will tell you what her problem is. She spent over an hour talking with me and
quickly diagnosed a hypothyroid based on my symptoms. She is very much in favor of Armour thyroid
and that is what she prescribed based on my symptoms. I began to feel better almost immediately. The
only down side to Dr. Pangle's clinic is that they do not accept any form of insurance because most of
their work is for weight loss. However, she only requires that you actually come in to see her once a year
and the rest of the time you can just conference on the phone for no charge. Not many doctors are willing
to talk to you on the phone, but she is happy to do that in order to adjust doses or talk to you about
symptoms. Overall, I credit Dr. Pangle for giving me my life back because I was so sick with
hypothyroid and no other doctor wanted to even consider that my symptoms were genuine and could be
treated." (Added 6/05)

She sits down with you every time you go in and takes the time to really find out what is wrong. I know lots of people who are losing weight because of her blend of natural thyroid medicine and her special cell program diet plan that is based on gluten free eating. compassionate and understanding my problems. She is the only Doctor that had true feelings for her
patients. She put me on Synthroid and hormones. I have only been on them for one week, and I can
already tell a big difference in my health. I am 55 years old and not any other Doctor was understanding

medicine for approximately twenty years to date. I work as a flight nurse/ paramedic in the state of
Texas, and I fully understand the importance of being diagnosed correctly and the importance of time
frames. In my profession, this needs to be done in split seconds and minutes. People's lives depend upon
it! I also know that some of us "health professionals" can be the most stubborn patients because of our
knowledge base! I have grown to respect and trust Dr. Perlman as a colleague and a friend. Dr. Perlman
made a diagnosis and taken action that has saved my life, LITERALLY! She has enabled me to return
to my care of patients and to stay alive for my family (and it is not a small family network!). God bless
you and all of your efforts. You are truly a role model to be followed!" (Added 1/06)

control since I have become her patient." (Added Apr 06)
Another reader writes:
"Dr. Perlman on the first visit looked at my family history and did the correct lab work and diagnosed my Hashimoto's. She also believes in bioidentical hormones. She is very busy and at times her office is full and there is not enough chairs to sit in, which isn't the nicest, but her medical acumen is right on. She is working on getting the right level of Armor Thyroid. She is very thorough. I also believe she is very intuitive and very, very thorough. " (Added Dec. 2006)
Another reader writes:
"I suspect that I have had hypothyroidism for at least the last 10 years. Despite one of my docs requesting a thyroid panel done on me every year for the last 10 years, my results have always come back in the normal range.
In November 2004, an ENT doc discovered large nodules on my thyroid gland during an initial consult for my allergies and asthma.
Extensive thyroid testing revealed multiple "cold" nodules on my thyroid. One large nodule was in excess of 2 cm.
Of course all of the thyroid panels came back within the normal range and indicated that my thyroid gland was functioning adequately.
Fine-Needle biopsy revealed that the nodules were goiters.
Finally, in September 2005, the same ENT decided to try putting me on 1 mg of Synthroid for the purpose of shrinking the nodules.
Again, as usual, all of my thyroid panels were indicating that there was nothing wrong with my thyroid.
After eighteen months with this ENT and my thyroid nodules did not diminish in size, he wanted to remove my thyroid gland.
I decided to get a second opinion.
In June 2006, I had a consult with an endocrinologist who told me at our first and only session that she believed that, in the presence of any nodules on the thyroid, the thyroid gland should be removed "just in case" any of the nodules were malignant.
With that kind of thinking, I knew that my search for a good thyroid doctor was definitely not over.
Fortunately, one of my docs agreed to continue to write my scripts for Synthroid until I could find a doctor who could help me resolve my thyroid problems.
I first found out about Dr. Perlman on this site. I have also asked several very knowledgeable people in the local medical profession about their knowledge of Dr. Perlman.
Every medical professional that I asked responded by telling me that they had only heard very positive things from Dr. Perlman's patients.
I saw Dr. Perlman for the first time the end of April 2007. She was very kind and reassuring. She did an extensive battery of testing.
There are no words to describe how relived I was when I asked Dr. Perlman about the possibility of thyroid surgery. Dr. Perlman stated that she believes in non-surgical intervention and surgery only as a last resort.
Dr. Perlman takes a whole body approach to healing. She considers the entire endocrine system and believes in addressing general endocrine imbalances as a way of healing thyroid problems.
At this time, part of Dr. Perlman's extensive and thorough testing revealed that I barely had enough estrogen to record a level on a lab test. My testosterone levels were also far below normal.
My thyroid results were again normal despite the presence of the thyroid nodules.
Dr. Perlman started me on a regiment of estrogen and testosterone replacement therapy. She uses a special compounding pharmacy in Colorado or Dallas, Texas to fill prescriptions uniquely designed for each patient's individual needs.
Dr. Perlman takes a very conservative approach. She wants to address my estrogen and testosterone deficits first and see what effect that correcting these imbalances has on my thyroid.
I've only been on the replacement hormones for less than 2 weeks, so it's too soon to tell any difference in how I feel.
However, I would highly recommend Dr. Perlman to anyone. She is low-key, very respectful to her patients, and she truly seems to care." (August 2007)

"I live in Oklahoma-which is 6 hours from Odessa. I grew up in Andrews. I went to see a Endocrinologist in Oklahoma city and he diagnosed me with thyroid disease. He put me on medication. Instead of me feeling better, I got to feeling worse. I had horrible headaches and had no energy whatsoever (with 2 children that's impossible to be). I called him and he told me to go in and have lab work done, so I did. When he got the results back he said everything looked normal, and that something else must be wrong to go back to my family doctor. Well, I knew something was not right. I lived like that for 3 more months. My mother heard about Dr. Perlman and recommended me to call and to come see her. I did. The first thing she asked was where was the picture and the tsh results? I said, "what?" The doctors here never did test my tsh. come to find out the doctor in Oklahoma city was overdosing me. She immediately changed my medicine, took blood, and asked me to come back in 2 weeks. So I did. She changed my medicine again and after 9 months had me finally leveled off. I dropped 22 pounds and felt like a 30 year old should feel. It's worth the drive and wait to see her in the office. She is wonderful!" (August 2007)

I have been on thyroid for 20+ yrs.The last 2 family practitioners that I had seen had each lowered my Synthroid (I begged them not to lower it), put me on high blood pressure med.,and suggested that I have gastric by-pass surgery.I went on internet and found Dr. Perlman's name, did some more research, and printed the thyroid symptoms list.I had the majority of the symptoms (and this is while on 125mg.of Synthroid). I called her office and spoke to her nurse and asked if she thought Dr.Perlman could help me?I set up an appointment for 4/9/07.I had a list of all meds and vitamins that I had been taking, and the thyroid symptoms list. She took me off of the high blood pressure med., did blood work.I went back to her 3 days later..and she put me on armor thyroid and hormones and she has me on the The New Mayo Clinic Diet...11 days later, I have lost 8lbs,and feel better than I've felt in years. Oh,yes---her waiting room is usually filled & you might have to stand in the hallway...the wait is well worth getting to see this amazing doctor. Thanks, to Dr. Perlman I feel like a new person..I only wish that I had seen her sooner. A GREAT LADY!!!!!!" (August 2007)

Richardson, TX 75080, 972-235-2459 972-235-9435 fax http://drgrebennikov.yourmd.com. "This
doctor is very willing to prescribe Armour..believes in keeping TSH
values at 1.0...I have seen him now 4 times and each time he has directed
me to anew internet site...usually not in the U.S. that is doing wonderful
new things in the world of medicine...after being thrown out of a doctor's
office for mentioning Armour...Dr. g is a breath of fresh air who provides
a balanced view."
Another recommendation:
I can't say enough about Dr. Grebennikov!! He's awesome in every meaning
of the word. I have gone to MANY Dr.'s concerning my hypothyroidism
and he's the first one that both listened to my concerns and was INTELLIGENT
enough to know what to do about them! He tested me very thoroughly which
hadn't been done before. He doesn't just rely on the TSH but looks further.
My TSH was in the "normal" ranges but I knew something was wrong. He
tested my antibodies and many other things as well. Turns out, my antibodies
were 676 out of a range of normal from 0-34! AND, he's not just calling
in a prescription but wants to see me to discuss treatment. All in all,
he's thorough, friendly, extremely intelligent and a top notch Dr. to
go to if you need a good thyroid Dr. I'm driving from 30 miles away
if that tells you anything!" (Added 6/02).
Another fan of Dr. Grebennikov:
"I have finally met a doctor who is not afraid of the informed patient!
Dr. Grebennikov listened to what I had been through since my thyroidectomy....the
weight gain, the general feeling of blah, my reasons for wanting Armour,
etc. He prescribed Armour for me and for the first time in a year, I
feel great! He is a very caring man whose ultimate concern is his patients
well being. Quite a refreshing change from the other doctors I've seen.
I've already recommended him to several others, including my adult daughter."
(Added 6/02).
Another reader recommends Dr. Vladimir Grebennikov:
"I went to Dr. G because I found his name on this list and live near
by. I had been going to doctors outside of my health plan and paying
top dollar. I did have some improvement with these other doctors but
there was plenty of room for more improvement. What I found was a doctor
who thinks outside of the box. Loves to talk to the informed patient.
He is very knowledgeable but is willing to learn. Even though my TSH
was .07 he still increased my dose because there was room for an increase
based upon my Free T-3 and Free T-4 levels and my symptoms. He treats
patients based on symptoms and not numbers. He has even read Dr. Jeffries
book "Safe uses of Cortisol." He checks your cortisol levels and not
just your thyroid levels. He is a very nice and caring doctor who will
work with you to find the answers. He even suggests herbs or vitamins
he feels could be of benefit based on your health and labs. (No he isn't
selling them either.)" (Added 11/02)
A reader writes: "He
really listens. He doesn't brush off, gloss over or assume, as so many
of my previous doctors have done. He answers questions." (Added:

question. He cares deeply about his patients and works tirelessly with each one individually. I recommend
him to all my friends and they love him just as much as I do." (Added 10/05)
A reader writes:
"Dr. G" is the best thing that has happened to my health in years. I have never had a doctor run such a full-spectrum of tests, and he was the only doc to inform me that I have Hashimoto's disease. While he takes each patient's concerns seriously, he also pairs this with a wonderful dose of humor/great manner! Dr. Grebennikov is the best" (Added October 2007)

Internal Medicine, 970 N. Coit Rd Suite 2403A, Richardson, TX 75080
972-235-2459 972-235-9435 . I do not have thyroid issues, but am a type
II diabetic struggling to make my body repair itself. I have met with
"Dr. G" twice in the last month and am beginning to see improvements in my
blood sugars, hunger issues, diet and overall energy. He is a great doctor
and works well to understand his patients and builds the doctor/patient
relationship on trust. We are working with a treatment plan other doctors
refused to consider. I always give my doctors a year of service before I
decide if I am getting anywhere. I think I have finally found my doctor.
I would highly recommend him for medical issues other than thyroid. His
office staff is also great." (Added October 2007)

Dr. Grebennikov is a loving and easy to talk to doctor. He believes in Armor and is a master of test results and cutting edge treatments. Dr. Grebennikov employs many modalities. Every inch of his office space is taken up with various types of equipment and exam rooms. He gives every patient all of the time they need and explains complex issues in terms one can understand. much time as you need discussing your healthcare issues. She is hypothyroid herself and understands the
problems faced with thyroid insufficiency. She prescribes Armour as a FIRST choice, but is willing to

Texas 210-650-3360. A reader informs us, "Dr. Fetchick listens to you.
Realizes that lab numbers are not who we are. She will work with you
to reach your optimal health."
Another reader adds:
"I would like to second the recommendation for Dr. Diane Fetchick. When
I went to see her, she was the second endocrinologist I'd gone to see.
After months of overmedication and poor treatment, she recognized immediately
that there were other issues (in addition to the Hashimoto's) contributing
to my symptoms. She looks at the big picture and really pays attention
to your specific complaints. Because of her recommendations, I found
out that I have severe allergies and a very deviated septum which together,
perpetuates monthly sinus infections with constant headaches and fatigue.
She suggested a low carb diet to see if high insulin could be a culprit
in my inability to lose weight. And switched my T4 to see if the edema
would diminish. So far she's 3 for 3 and I'm feeling better than I have
in a long time. There is a considerable wait to get in to see her…never
shorter than 2 months, but the wait is SO WORTH IT." (Added 11/02) San Antonio
Dr. Jerome Fischer, Endocrinologist, Diabetes and Glandular Clinic,
San Antonio I've seen three doctors for my "atypical Grave's Disease."
While Dr. Fischer is BUSY, he always has time to answer my questions.
He encourages my investigation of websites, educational resources, etc.
Most importantly he listens to me. No matter how busy he is, he is always
on top of my condition. He's also been very helpful in sending letters
as needed to my Primary Care Physician. This doctor has always returned
my phone calls and I think I would have gone crazy had it not been for
his reassurance and compassion. Truly, a credit to his profession. San Antonio
Karen Goodman, Family Practice, Wellmed, 4243 E. Southcross, Suite 205,
San Antonio, TX 78222. One reader informs us, "Dr. Goodman always takes
the time to listen. I know she is very busy but I never feel rushed.
Whether it is just one question or literally a list - she will answer
each one in a clearly understandable way. Although my TSH is now in
the normal range, Dr. Goodman is working with me to find a level that
makes me feel better. She treats me with respect and as a partner in
our efforts to get me feeling better. Another big plus is the fact that
the office is run very well. It is rare that I have to wait more than
10 minutes." San Antonio
John D. Hernandez, M.D., Internal, Integrative-traditional & Natural,
2235 Thousand Oaks, suite 102B San Antonio, Texas 210-495-3055. A reader
informs us, "Dr. Hernandez blends traditional and natural health care.
I asked Dr. Hernandez what level of TSH he was hoping to get me to.
He said he would look at TSH but the bottom line was how I felt. He
has started me on Levoxyl and has now added T3. He thinks I am resistant
to thyroid hormone. The main thing is that he listens and has encouraged
me to call and let him know how I am feeling or if I am having any problems." San Antonio
Dr. Kathy A. LaCivita, Endocrinologist, University Health System, 302
W.Rector, San Antonio, TX.78216, (210)358-0818. "Dr. LaCivita realized
right away that I was on too much medication (Synthroid). My other doctor
kept telling me my thyroid was normal. She also found out I was a diabetic,
the other doctor said I was not. I feel great now. I'm on Levoxyl now
and have lost 20 lbs."
Another reader recommends Dr. LaCivita:
"Dr. Kathy LaCivita Is the best doctor that we have seen in San Antonio.
My husband has low testosterone levels and she helped diagnose the problem
thus fixing a big part of our marriage. I hate it that we do not have
her on our insurance plan any longer. We are unhappy with the current
doctor and are considering going out of the network so he can go back
to Dr. LaCivita. However, it will be very expensive. He really likes
the fact the she gave him her email address and they could communicate
about any problems or questions. Now, we are stuck waiting to see this
other doctor at her soonest appt in 4 months. IT IS CRAZY!" (added 1/04)

Note: Readers are reporting that Dr. Menendez seems very busy and may be overextended. Do your best to ensure you get a proper visit. (July 2007)
A reader tells us,
"Dr. Menendez is up to date on research, he listens to his patients
and treats them like real people. He does not let insurance companies
run his practice."
Another patient writes:
"Dr. Menendez not only listens to his patients, he also tries to educate
his patients as well. He takes the time to explain things and gives
useful information and resources to allow patients to take an active
role in their health. He is up to date on all the latest research, takes
an interest in his patients lives. He goes the extra mile to his patients.
I have a "fickle thyroid" and even though it took a while to control,
he was never content with "just ok", he wanted me to feel great. And
I do. I highly recommend him."
More praise from a reader for Dr. Menedez:
"He makes his patients feel like people. He cares for his patients and
is very protective. He is always there for us no matter what. He gives
his "ALL" to his patients. He is an exceptional person and a credit
to his profession. He is very highly recommended!" (added 1/04)
More praise:
"I’m from Mexico and I go all the way to Texas to see Dr. Menendez.
He is a great doctor. My daughter has been hypothyroid since she was
10 years old and I went to many doctors without success until I met
Dr. Menendez." (Added 4/04)
Another recommendation for Dr. Menendez:
"After visiting a succession of specialists for 2 years and still having
major symptoms, I found that Dr. Menendez practiced in Kerrville on
Tuesdays. Dr. Menendez walked in and touched my neck and said, ‘You
have a goiter. Your thyroid must be low; let’s try a clinical trial
of Synthroid.’ I was so relieved not to be told my levels a little low
but still in the normal range and that I should just take more Prozac.
I had told the OB-GYN, the Internist, and several other doctors that
low thyroid ran in my family and asked repeatedly for help. No one listened.
They diagnosed me with Cushing’s Disease, but Dr. Menendez ruled it
out on the first visit and put my worries to rest." (Added 4/04)
Another reader writes:
"Dr. Menendez is a GREAT doctor!! He listen to you and is extremely patient with you. One of my
teachers recommended him to me, and I’m grateful for that. So many other doctors don't show this
kindness that Dr. Menedez does. I give out a special recommendation out to anyone and everyone who
needs an endocrinologist, Dr. Carlos Menedez will help you, and care for you." (Added 6/05)

"Finding Dr. MacGillivray was a huge blessing. My initial office visit was over 2 hours long and he really listened to me and my concerns. He had no problem placing me back on Armor after another doctor was hesitant, and even recommended a local compounding pharmacy. I can get an office visit anytime I need one without waiting and he's even has weight loss programs available if you want it - all included in the fee. The concept behind his practice is a bit different but well worth it to have a doctor that is available to you even on the weekends!" (May 2008)

doctor who believes in listening to his patients and not just depend
on lab tests. He says that he learns a lot just from listening to his
patients. He recognizes that most everyone comes in with symptoms which
usually shows up in lab test but he listens to his patients to help
find the origin of the symptom. Thus he doesn't just treat the symptoms
as most doctors do. He is open to using alternative medicines. He is
