VIRGINIA:
THYROID TOP DOCTORS DIRECTORY

The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care. Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. The doctor may be brilliant and innovative, but have a terrible bedside manner. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment. Please let me know if you have feedback -- positive or negative -- about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your "top" doctor.

Thanks! -- Mary
TELL US ABOUT YOUR DOCTOR!

Become part of the movement for better care! Help keep great doctors in business and encourage more doctors to properly treat thyroid patients by recommending the smart, caring, innovative practitioner who treats your thyroid condition. We might include him or her on the Top Docs Directory! And if you have criticism or feedback about a listed doctor, please let us know now!

Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?

Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.
* The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
* The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
* The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
* Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.
* Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.

Aldie

Norman Levin, MD, Internal Medicine / Rheumatology, 39070 John Mosby Hwy, Rt 50,P.O. Box 107, Aldie, VA 20105, 703-260-3484. "He has a complementary / holistic practice; he uses Armour, he treats adrenal insufficiency; he listens and spends a tremendous amount of time with you." (Added 6/02).

Another fan:
"Dr. Levin has to be the best doctor I think I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot, trying to find a professional that was willing to work with Hashimotos and a TSH level "within normal range". I was very symptomatic (weight gain, hair loss, fatigue, etc.). All my symptoms were ignored by other practitioners. I was even having blackout spells when I became menopausal at dinner parties (no, only one alcoholic drink and moderate eating). I researched bioidentical hormones and found it difficult to find a doctor willing to work with someone on this particular medication, but had to when the lowest dose estrogen birth control pill gave me a dangerous blood clot. Dr. Levin works with bioidentical hormones, and treats his patients with an emphasis on bioidentical medicines/products. He works out of his home, which is located just outside Middleburg, VA. He treats his patients with respect, treats people for adrenal stress, spends as much time as is necessary with you, and really listens. I felt that he was the ideal doctor, and I highly recommend him!"

Another recommendation:

A reader writes: "It takes a while to get into to see him, but he is great. He diagnosed my adrenal gland dysfunction. No other doctor had even though of that. He is willing to listen and explain. There are patients getting treatment for many aliments. He offers the Meyers injections and a multitude of alternative treatments." (June 2006)

Alexandria/Northern Virginia

Kate Lemmerman, MD, and Steinmetz Medical Associates, 1225 Martha Custis Drive, Suite C-1 Alexandria, Virginia 22302, Phone: 703-671-2700, Fax: 703-671-7007, Office email: info@caringdoc.com, Web: www.caringdoc.com.

Note from Mary: Dr. Kate is very heavily booked, and frequently, she is closed to new patients, or has a waiting list of many months. But if you can't get in to see Dr. Kate as a new patient, I can highly recommend her colleague at Steinmetz, Dr. Adrienne Clamp, who is equally knowledgeable and compassionate in providing thyroid, adrenal and hormonal care with a holistic/integrative approach. (May 2008).

Author and patient advocate Mary Shomon writes:
"My general practice doctor, who manages my thyroid care, is Kate Lemmerman, MD. In addition to providing primary care, handling women's health issues, and especially her top-notch thyroid and hormone treatment, Dr. Kate is trained in medical acupuncturist and practices osteopathic manipulation. She's a holistic doctor, caring, listens, open-minded. She's an MD who realized that there's a lot more to healing than just prescribing medications, and so she went on to study complementary and holistic medicine approaches after her conventional medical education. Dr. Kate truly believes in partnership with her patients, and I can't say enough things about what an excellent, open-minded, and top-notch physician she is. You may have to wait a bit to get an appointment, as she's always in great demand (and rightfully so!) But she's worth the wait!!" (Updated July 2007)

Another reader recommends Dr. Kate Lemmerman:
"Dr. Kate is wonderful. She is caring, compassionate, and willing to try something outside the "box". Alternative medicine is main stream here. Dr. Kate makes you feel like a person, not a number. Any lab results are discussed in detail with you. She explains where you are at and where she would like to try to get you to - each time and every time lab work is done. Dr. Kate is also an acupuncturist and does osteopathic adjustments. She treats the whole person, not just your thyroid. After numerous doctors, I was so happy when I found Dr. Kate Lemmerman." (Added 11/02)

Alexandria/Northern Virginia

Adrienne Clamp, MD, at Steinmetz Medical Associates, 1225 Martha Custis Drive, Suite C-1 Alexandria, Virginia 22302, Phone: 703-671-2700, Fax: 703-671-7007, Office email: info@caringdoc.com, Web: www.caringdoc.com

"Dr. Clamp, who is herself hypothyroid, has extensive experience working with people with hypothyroidism, adrenal fatigue, and hormonal imbalances. She is well-versed in the use of various thyroid medications, including time-released T3, Armour Thyroid, and Cytomel, and has expertise in various treatments for adrenal exhaustion, including hydrocortisone. Dr. Clamp is board certified in Family Medicine and Medical Acupuncture, and has a background in family medicine. She is an empathetic and caring practitioner, who is open-minded, integrative in her approach, and willing to work with thyroid patients to help them truly feel well." (May 2008).

Alexandria

Donna Hurlock, M.D, 205 S. Whiting St. Suite 303, Alexandria, VA 22304 Phone 703-823-1533 Fax: 703-823-5873

Dr. Hurlock writes: "I've been treating hypothyroidism clinically for about 10 years and during that time have treated thousands of patients, many of whom have been suffering for years and even decades. My general approach is to treat the patient until they are well. Seems simple, but the standard approach only treats until the lab test is ôwellö. I use clinical signs and symptoms to guide therapy. I've found that the lab tests really don't measure function of thyroid, so clinical factors are much more important. As for what products I use, I use them all, and if one does not work, I'll use something else. My biggest thrill is when the patient comes in on the perfect dose, all her symptoms are resolved and she's healthier than she has been for years! Many of my patients are able to get off lots of other meds because they no longer need them, and most of those who need to lose weight, begin to do so once the best dose is found. Since I am a gynecologist by training, I see only women for thyroid issues. Many also have gynecologic issues, polycystic ovaries, problematic menses, menopausal issues, etc. I am also a Certified Menopause Practitioner and have treated menopausal issues for over 20 years. I try to balance reproductive hormones in the same way that I do hypothyroidism. By treating all of these issues together, with a holistic approach, we usually end up with excellent results. I also find that hand outs and reprints of literature are very useful since we often cover so much information that it is impossible for anyone to retain it all. Please see our web site www.dhurlock.yourmd.com for more information. We no longer participate with insurance plans but we will give you the necessary paperwork for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement."

.A reader recommends Dr. Hurlock:

"She relies on patient input and lab results!" (Added 11/02)

More praise from a reader for Dr. Hurlock:
"She has saved my life! She listens when everyone else thinks that I am crazy. She understands secondary hypothyroidism and she makes sure that I do too. Her "bedside manner" is terrific. I hope that I will continue to see her no matter where I move to. She is worth a trip around the globe." (added 1/04)

Another recommendation:
"After many frustrating years with multiple symptoms and many doctors who didn’t understand and misdiagnosed me, I found Dr. Hurlock. She looked at all my medical records and test results , but most importantly she LISTENED to me. Dr. Hurlock worked with me and not only based my dosages of Armour on my bloodwork, but also how I was feeling. I would recommend this doctor to anyone who feels like they are not being heard. This doctor is a heck of a trip for me, but I will drive anywhere to continue to be helped by someone this good." (Added 4/04)

Alexandria

Dr. Michael Redding, General practice/internist/primary care, 8109 Tis Well Drive # 511 , Alexandria, VA 22306, 703-719-9500

"Dr. Redding always works to fit you in. He makes himself available to his patients and always puts his all into making you feel like you are the only person he is seeing that day. He gives you the attention you need to make you comfortable with your health and makes the tough recommendations that need to made from time to time to keep us all on track. He is the best doctor my husband and I have ever had." (May 2008)

Dr. Lisa Lilienfield, Kaplan Clinic, 5275 Lee Highway, Suite 200, Arlington, VA 22207, (703) 532-4892. www.kaplanclinic.com

"I have just started seeing Dr. Lisa Lilienfield, and I am so happy with her. She is very knowledgeable and thorough, and is careful to discuss what your other docs are doing with you. Like the other members of the Kaplan practice, she is trained in Osteopathy and Acupuncture, and has used both on me with good results already. Not only does she listen, she remembers....and that is very reassuring when you are faced with a health challenge." (Added: Dec. 04)

Another reader writes:
"After years of thyroid hell with medications, and then ending up hyperthyroid, I am so thankful to have found Dr. Lisa Lilienfield at the Kaplan Clinic. She's the first doctor I've ever seen that actually knows something about the complexities of thyroid diseases. She listens and treats the whole person, and follows up consistently. I feel she really cares and for the first time I may actually get to the bottom of what has been going on with her help." (May 2008)

NOTE FROM MARY SHOMON: I have written about and recommended my own wonderful physician, Kate Lemmerman, MD, for more than 15 years. Dr. Lemmerman was with Kaplan Clinic, but has moved to Steinmetz Steinmetz Medical, where she is practicing integrative, holistic family medicine -- and will be continuing to provide her outstanding thyroid and hormone care -- with Marie Steinmetz, MD. Dr. Coffey writes: "Since I am Chiropractic Physician I do not prescribe hormones. Rather I look at your system and evaluate your metabolism to assess why or what is the underlying cause of your issue. Identify, Eliminate and Rebuild. Individual Optimal Nutrition is the major factor. My thyroid was sluggish and I was fatigued I identified that gluten was the major offending agent in my diet. I eliminated gluten, coffee and chocolate and lost 20 lbs in 4 months and I no longer have fibrocystic breast disease. Ultimately, there are other issues that still need to be revealed. This was a huge step for me at 45. Don't look for a silver bullet, because it doesn't exist. Seek the truth and the truth will set you free."

A reader writes: "Dr. Nahrain actually looked me in the eye and really assessed my symptoms. She never rushed me and took time to truly understand my health. After trying many different endocrinologist ( some rated top doctors in endocrinology) I found Dr. Al-Zubaidi to be the most caring the most consistently attentive doctor of the all. After my surgery I must have called her at least 5-6 times within a short period of time with questions and despite her busy schedule she always , always called me back no matter the time. Dr. Al-Zubaidi alwasy took my health as seriously as I did and never discounted my experience. I couldn't speak more highly of a doctor. If you want a caring doctor that is knowledgable and friendly I most certainly would recommend Dr. Al-Zubaidi." (June 2006)

Another fan:
"I came to Dr. Al-Zubaidi for help with treating my thyroid condition. I could not possibly recommend a Doctor more highly. Her office staff which I believe consists of two young ladies are extremely helpful, friendly and returned my calls promptly. Fredericksburg

Mark A. McClanahan, M.C., Diabetes and Thyroid, 10711 Spotsylvania Avenue, Fredericksburg, VA 22408, Phone: (540) 981-8499/(540) 891-8662, A reader writes: "I have been treated for hypothyroidism for 12 plus years now. I have never had such a fantastic visit as I had today with Dr. McClanahan. Dr. McClanahan's staff was fantastic when I called to schedule my initial appointment. They even sent me a welcome packet of sorts in the mail, which I received the day after making my appointment. Dr. McClanahan's whole office staff was friendly, helpful and welcoming. He was open and receptive to answering all of my questions. I didn't feel rushed or like I was putting him out by asking so many! Dr. McClanahan appeared to be very interested and well read in all the new findings regarding thyroid research. He believes thyroid patients feel better when their levels are in the 0.5 to 2.0 range rather than the traditional 0.5 to 5.5 range. On the same note he did say if he has a patient that is at 3.0 and feels fantastic -- why mess with it?! Dr. McClanahan also talked to me about the possibilities of taking supplemental T3 in addition to Levoxyl if my labs appear fine and yet I still do not feel well. He seemed extremely supportive in helping the patient to find a way to feeling better. His lab is in-office and I was seen to have my blood drawn quite quickly. He said his office calls with all results not just "bad" ones. He said to expect a call from them on Monday (today is Friday). When refilling my prescription he made sure to specifically indicate that no generic substitutions were to be made by the pharmacy. He also stressed to me the importance of using a brand name to ensure consistent doses. I just got back from my appointment at his practice and am feeling very enthusiastic and hopeful. I wanted to let people know about Dr. McClanahan right away! He is truly a fantastic physician! " (Added: Dec. 04)

Another recommendation:
"He took me seriously. He called me at home one time to answer my questions. He has a good bedside manner. I’m not sure how else to say it-he’s one of the best thyroid doctors." (Added 10/05)

Another fan:
"I love Dr. McClanahan! The first reader summer everything up quite well, so I don't have much to add. I have Hashi's and just had my first appointment. It was such an uplifting experience. He is very open and easy to talk with. I can't believe that he spent almost an hour talking to me about thyroid diseases! Dr. McClanahan understands that some people may not feel their best even when the labs show normal ranges. He is very open to prescribing Armour or supplemental T3 if the patient wants to try it. My other endo only spent about 5 minutes in the room with me and was very dismissive about my concerns. I just cannot say enough good things about this Dr. and his entire staff. I left my appointment armed with a lot of knowledge about my disease." (Added 1/06)

Leesburg

Carolyn Walsh, MD, www.carolynwalshmd.com. Leesburg, VA.

"I want to let you know about an excellent doctor with whom I am working. She figured out my undiagnosed thyroid problemafter years of problems. I almost don't want to let the world in on this information because it will be impossible to book an appointment after I do. I had an variety ofsymptoms which included fatigue, weight gain, menstruation difficulties (PMS, erratic periods, etc.), and just general "fogginess." These symptoms were not like me. I had been teaching fitness boot camp seven days a week, worked as a personal trainer, was always full of energy, could work all day and fall into bed. I had given birth to two healthy children and I weighed in the high 130s at 5'4". As a personal trainer and fitness instructor, I was typically energized or helped others become energized. I first told my gynecologist about how I felt and she put me on birth control pills and washed her hands of it. A few months later, general practitioners put me on anti-depressants for their perceived depression (which I took since I had no other plan in place,) estrogen cream and progesterone cream made at a special pharmacy for low estrogen and prog. levels, and an herbal adrenal fatigue supplement. These were regular M.D. doctors, who felt I, at 32-33, was experiencing early menopause. They had never seen it before, and it was not documented, but I would be the first patient in their knowledge to do so. (N. B.: Regardless of which practitioner I was seeing, or what time my appointment was, I waited at least 45 m up to 1.5 hours for my appointment. Calls to nurses were not returned promptly and you have to play phone tag to reach them.) I did not feel confident with that diagnosis since it just was so odd. I happened upon Dr. Walsh, since I was tired of waiting in GP's waiting room. I came in a few weeks later with labs from various other MD visits and she consulted with me. She ordered new tests. She ruled out diabetes (this was never a concern, but she ruled it out). She ruled out various other issues and then determined I had secondary hypothyroidism. My TSH level was .99, but my T3 and T4 levels were low. My pituitary gland was not sending the signal to my thyroid, or my thyroid was not utilizing the information correcting. In any event, my body thought I had plenty of thyroid hormone, but I did not. I feel at least 75% better mentally and physically I feel about 50% improved Already. I am almost ready to claim victory! I just wanted to let you and your reader know about this amazing doctor, who spent the time and mental energy to figure out what was going on with me. I am indebted to her and so thankful I found some type of answer. (Note: She has same day appointments, has no front office staff except an answering service, is totally prompt and professional. She does not accept insurance, you must submit yourself. Her credentials are impeccable and her warm nature is genuine.)" (August 2007)

He is caring, compassionate, well informed, and appreciates the fact that I have done my own research. He listens to what I have to say and talks to me like an adult instead of patronizingly talking at me. My appointments have both been about 30 minutes spent with the doctor. He makes one feel very comfortable in the appointment, going so far as to weigh women patients at the end so they won't feel uncomfortable from the beginning. He treats my hypothyroidism on the basis of my symptoms and basal temperature with Armour and is experimenting with supplemental T3 in some patients. He also recognizes a connection of hypothyroidism with Candida and with hyperinsulinism and is willing to treat the Candida. He is very perceptive and takes into account my lifestyle when recommending treatment. Finding him is the best thing I have ever done for my health and I feel blessed to be his patient."

A reader writes: "As a thyroid disease patient I cannot say enough positive things about Dr. George Amberman, MD. He is a very caring and compassionate physician who knows how to deal with the myriad of problems that can go along with thyroid disease. He keeps current on the latest treatment approaches with thyroid disease and listens to his patients. He understands that "a one size" treatment approach in dealing with this illness does not fit all. I have autoimmune thyroid disease and I have spoken and worked with Dr. Amberman over the years with referrals as a thyroid advocate. Roger W. Newsom, MD Ophthalmology/Oculoplastic Surgery 933 First Colonial Road Suite 105 Virginia Beach VA 23454 (757)422-4235 www.tidewatereye.com. A reader writes: " I went to Dr. Newsom on a whim and ended up with a gem. I have Hashi's, Graves and severe TED. On my first visit with him, we went over my 4 year history with all of this. His first question to me was, "Has anyone ever explained the autoimmunity involved in TED and how TSI antibodies effect it?" I knew by that question that I had found the ophth for me! He spent a lot of time discussing things with me and was impressed with the research I have done online. He currently is treating about 15 patients with severe TED. Finally, a doctor who is in agreement with me that I should not have any surgeries to my eyes while the eye disease is still active and my vision is not in jeopardy! Great staff, too! I highly recommend him to all Graves/TED patients! He also practices out of the Portsmouth office..(757) 483-0400." (Added 6/03)

Laurel D. Tschirgi, Internist, 1870 Amhearst Street, Suite 1-D, Winchester VA, 22655, 540 723 0611. "After years of being treated for the individual symptoms of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis I finally went to Dr. Tshirgi. She spent well over an hour with me taking my history and symptoms and carefully asking questions. She understood that I was already being treated with Levoxyl for hypothyroidism but decided to run extensive tests anyway. Thank God. Dr. Tschirigi is the first Doctor I have been to that even took the time to put the symptoms together to form a diagnosis. Her skills as a physician have earned her a place in the Doctors guide to the top 100 physicians in the country list. She is hands down the best Doc I've ever been to see." (Added 6/02).
