WISCONSIN:
THYROID TOP DOCTORS DIRECTORY

The following listing includes recommended doctors and practitioners for your thyroid care. Please note that being listed here in the Thyroid Top Doctors Directory doesn't necessarily mean a doctor is the right one for you. The doctor may be an empathetic and warm physician, but not open to working with drugs like Armour or T3 drugs. The doctor may be brilliant and innovative, but have a terrible bedside manner. Or the doctor may be quite costly and not on insurance programs. Always call the doctor's office ahead of time to find out more about the doctor's philosophy, approach, costs, and other important factors before going in for your first appointment. Please let me know if you have feedback -- positive or negative -- about doctors listed here, or would like to recommend your "top" doctor.

Thanks! -- Mary
TELL US ABOUT YOUR DOCTOR!

Become part of the movement for better care! Help keep great doctors in business and encourage more doctors to properly treat thyroid patients by recommending the smart, caring, innovative practitioner who treats your thyroid condition. We might include him or her on the Top Docs Directory! And if you have criticism or feedback about a listed doctor, please let us know now!

Why is a Particular Doctor No Longer Listed?

Doctors who were previously listed here are removed for a number of reasons.
* The doctor has requested that his/her listings be removed because: he/she does not agree with this site’s philosophy or patient-orientation; the practice is too busy and can’t accept new patients; the doctor does not feel comfortable handling complicated thyroid problems; the doctor did not agree with what was said in the patient recommendations; or the doctor said “take me off the list” and offered no explanation.
* The doctor has moved, retired, or died.
* The doctor has lost his/her license, or given up his/her license, and is no longer practicing medicine.
* Patients have provided negative input about the doctor that is of sufficient concern that, in the opinion of the editor, the doctor should no longer be on the Top Thyroid Doctors List.
* Thyroid Top Doctors would face legal concerns if we published specific information about why patients had negative opinions about doctors, or if we shared a doctor’s occasional ranting ”take me off” email, or if we publicized doctors with licensing problems. So please, if you see that a doctor has been taken off the list and want to know why, talk to the doctor directly. If you write to us to ask why a doctor was taken off the list, we’re sorry, but we won’t be able to answer you or share that information.

Janesville

Dr. Manelle Fernando Family Practice & Bariatrics 15 W. Milwaukee St. Suite 206 Janesville, WI 53545 Phone: 608-756-0791 Fax 608-755-7652

Note: Dr. Fernando is primarily a specialist in bariatrics (weight loss). Also, follow visits can be expensive, and insurance may not cover all or part of her services, as they view her as a weight loss doctor. Check ahead of time with your insurance.
Also, patients are reporting that you should be prepared to make at least two visits to start, at a cost of more than $1000. Check with your insurance ahead of time, because this doctor -- with her specialization in weight loss -- may not be covered. (october 2007)

A reader recommends: "Dr. Fernando is honest, open, caring and well-educated when it comes to thyroid, endocrine and obesity disorders. She listens to you with great interest and believes that we are all unique individuals that should be treated as such. Dr. Fernando will order the appropriate tests to look at all aspects of the thyroid. She will explain how your thyroid works, what the test results indicate, and what the best types of medication and plan of treatment are to treat your hypothyroidism. She uses Armour Thyroid, as well as other thyroid medications. She is also working in the Green Bay and Appleton area; so give her office a call to find out what her schedule is. She has me on the right road to "thyroid recovery" and is working to monitor not only my health, but weight problem, as well. Thank you Dr. Fernando!" (Added 11/02)

Another reader recommends Dr. Fernando:
"Dr. Fernando has her main office in Janesville, but also works out of the Green Bay and Appleton area. Dr. Fernando believes in treating her patients as unique individuals. She is very pro-active in taking a team approach between patient and doctor to treat your disease. She uses Armour thyroid because it provides the body with calcitonin, T0, T1, T2, T3 and T4 - so much more than what synthetic hormones offer. Dr. Fernando is very flexible and will be happy to discuss alternative methods if you are unable to take Armour. She is honest, open, caring and very well education in thyroid disorders, endocrine disorders, and weight issues. I am truly fortunate to have found such a receptive and enthusiastic doctor willing to sit down face-to-face with her patients and explain the mechanics of how your thyroid works, what your test results indicate, and what plan of treatment to get you started on. Thank you Dr. Fernando!" (Added 11/02)

Another reader added:
"Dr. Fernando listens to her patients and treats them as unique individuals. She will explain the mechanics of how your thyroids works, what types of medications are available to treat your condition, and will develop a plan of treatment that is personalized and flexible for her patients. She is very active in following up with her patients progress by ordering the full range of tests needed. Dr. Fernando will prescribe Armour Thyroid, as well as other medications to help you manage your disease. She is kind, caring, and listens to your concerns with an open mind. Dr. Fernando also works in the Appleton/Green Bay area." (Added 11/02)

Another reader writes:
"Thanks to this site, I located Dr. Fernando. I live in Green Bay but was willing to drive to Janesville for my initial tests and visits. I was then able to meet with Dr. Fernando in Green Bay on regular basis as she treats patients here on monthly basis. She definitely knows what she is talking about. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance and my visits were covered. Dr. Fernando took me off the synthroid and put me on Thyroid. For the first time in over a year, I was finally starting to feel normal again. Dr. Fernando also tested my other hormone levels as they are all related and found my entire system was off. Dr. Fernando explains everything and was the best thing that happened to me in a long time. The internal medicine and endocrinologists didn't seem to care if they found the answer or not. They just told me to go on anti-depressants. Thank you for telling me about Dr. Fernando!" (October 2006)

Kenosha

Dr. Sandra Sleszynski, Osteopath, 1010 - 35th Street, Kenosha WI 53140, 658-8822 "She listens to your symptoms and how you are feeling not just what your blood work shows. She is open to using Natural Thyroid drugs -- herbs and osteopathic manipulative therapy. Her office feels more like a friends house than a doctor's office. She is the most compassionate and yet completely thorough and professional doctore I have ever seen. "

Kenosha

Dr. Michael Berglund, chiropractic physician, 5027 Green Bay Rd. #118, WI 53144, 262 925-8600, drb@berglundcenter.com. A reader writes: "He listens and he tries to get the most out of my thyroid gland w/o prescriptions. He has changed my life." (Added 6/05)

LaCrosse

Dr. George Kroker, Allergy Specialist, Allergy Associates of LaCrosse, 615 S. 10th St., LaCrosse, WI 54601 (800)-950-9740. A reader writes: "Dr. Kroker ordered a T3 test on me the 1st time I saw him. When he discovered I had a T3 problem he immediately changed my prescription to Armour after previous Dr.'s had erroneously medicated me with Synthroid for 9 years - never testing me for anything except T4! I recently moved to CA and he returned my call immediately to put me in touch with a Doctor who would acknowledge me as a patient. My allergies & Candidiasis has improved about 80% since Dr. Kroker began treating me for all 3 conditions. I highly recommend him!"

La Crosse

Dr. Mary Morris, Allergy Associates of La Crosse, 615 S. 10th St., La Crosse, WI, 54601 (608) 782-2027 allergyassociatesoflacrosse.com

A reader writes:
"Dr. Mary Morris is one of the best allergists in the United States! She and her colleagues practice sublingual immunotherapy, which is basically taking drops under the tongue instead of shots. Much safer and can be administered to more populations. Drops can be taken at home, too. She diagnosed my Hashi's in my initial visit after a thorough exam-I had complained of candida-like symptoms as well as achy joints, etc. I have a family history of thyroid problems and other autoimmune disorders and she was able to get me started on Armour right away. I never had to deal with the T4 only meds, thank goodness! She is a colleague of Dr. Kroker who is mentioned already." (March 2009)

Lakewood

Kathie Huncuski, Physicians Assistant, Nicolet Clinic, Lakewood 715-276-6321. A reader writes, "She listens, and she is interested in making you well. She is open to other options. If you have read an article about something different or new, bring it to her. She will research it and find if it is a good thing for you. I have just started my treatment with her for hypothyroidism. She was totally in agreement to check into my adrenal glands when I suggested it and told me it was her next move anyhow. She was willing to try more meds when I told her I felt that I wasn’t on a high enough dose. She keeps track of my tests and is keeping me feeling better than I have in a long time."

Madison

Note: Dr. Wilson only sees patients with thyroid cancer Dr. Michael Wilson, Professor of Radiology and Endocrinology, University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics 600 Highland Ave. Madison, WI 53792-3252 608-263-5306. Madison

Dr. Ann Stanger -- NO LONGER LISTED

Milwaukee

Elaine Drobney endocrinologist 788 N. Jefferson St. Downtown Milwaukee 276-1906 A reader shares, "Although there were some things I disagreed with her about--like Synthroid is the best drug and I didn’t really need T3--she spent a long time looking over my previous test results and agreed that although they were "normal" that they might not be normal for me. We agreed on extending my meds and retesting in 2 months with a follow-up visit. She teaches at the medical college and knew other doctors I knew. She spent 1 1/2 hours just talking about my history and family and then discussing possible treatments."

Milwaukee

Dr. Burton Waisbren, Thyroid & Autoimmune Diseases, 2315 N. Lake Dr., Suite 815, Milwaukee, WI 53211, (414) 272-1929, www.waisbrenclinic.com. A reader writes: "Dr. Waisbren LISTENS. He does not give up. For the first time in 7 years, I feel like a human being again. Dr. Waisbren is wonderful!!!!" (Added 3/03)

A reader writes:
"I found Dr. Waisbren from this site. He is everything I read and more. After struggling for years, I now know what is wrong, my symptoms are real, and I am being treated. My family and I cannot begin to thank Dr. Waisbren enough." (Added 4/04)

Another reader writes:
"Dr. Waisbren was the first doctor to listen to me and hear what I had to say. I feel much better than I have in 10 years. I'm starting to take off some of the weight I gained and have much more energy." (Added 6/05)

Another reader writes:
"Reading the website and went to Dr. Waisbren. Already I feel like I am more myself. He is very knowledgeable and listens well. He treats the patient not the numbers. He also finds out what else is wrong and treats wonderfully. I would always recommend him. Thanks for the help." (August 2007)

Milwaukee

J. Allan Robertson, D.O. -- deceased

Milwaukee

Dr Gojko D. Stula, Bio-identical Hormone Therapy, Lifesteps Wellness Clinic, Milwaukee, WI 53217, 414-906-1998, uprevent@execpc.com. A reader writes: "While treating my menopause symptoms with bio-identical hormones, Dr Stula recognized that my fatigue and depression originated from an underactive thyroid function, even though clinical thyroid testing showed that I was within the normal range. Dr Stula was able to detect the problem at the sub-clinical level. Result: I feel totally in balance again." (June 2006)

Minocqua

Janet Bowen, RN MSN FNP, 8571 Highway 51N SuiteB, Minocqua WI 54548, 715-358-7727. A reader writes: "She offered Armour before I had chance to ask. And is willing to work with you until you feel great!" (Added: June 2004)

Neenah

Dr. Kaldas, OB&GYN, 200 Theda Clarke Medical Plaza, Neenah ,WI 54956, 920-729-7105. "Treats you like a human not a number. Listen to how you feel. Willing to try new medications when one doesn’t work for you. Respects patient input." (added 1/04)

Another recommendation:
"He listens and supports you. He is very thorough in explaining diagnosis/prognosis. He allows you to think about the options and procedures available. His medical staff are all wonderful and treat you like they are your friends." (Added 4/04)

Another fan:
"He is very caring. He is always willing to try new things." (Added 10/05)

Another fan:
"Dr. Kaldas is an excellent Doctor he goes by your symptoms not your labs. My TSH isn't even measurable and that is where I feel good."(August 2007)

Neenah

Laura Andrews, Endocrinology:special interest in thyroid disease, 411 Lincoln Street (Affinity Clinic), Neenah WI 54956, 920 727-4395. A reader writes: "Her special interest is thyroid disease, she listens and treats symptoms and not just lab results. Her care is very individualized and she is very aware that everyone is different and does not go strictly by the book. She can think outside the box. She takes time to listen. I'm a nurse and I've talked to her nursing staff and they all have great things to say about her. She does not believe in armour thyroid, however, for anyone looking for that. She believes in adding T3 when T4 doesn't seem to be enough. (She said there are drug companies working on long-acting T3 and is really excited about it. She is very accessible and I've always been able to get an appointment quickly when I'm having problems. She is also keeps very current on new research." (Added 1/06)

Oak Creek

Dr. Carol Brown, Holistic/complementary/alternative MD, Oak Creek, WI

A reader writes:
"Dr. Carol Brown MD in Oak Creek Wisconsin first discovered my Grave's Disease and knew how to help me. Her practice was in the process of making some changes and I followed her PA which was a huge mistake. Since then 6 years ago I have learned she is one of the leaders in Miwlaukee in bio identical hormones along with thyroid and definately understands that a lab is just a number - not what makes a patient feel well. She understands how important the Free T3 is and how important running otherslabs as well. She treats a patient as a whole - far from masking symptoms with medications. I can't wait to return to her clinic to finally have a team approach again with my treatment!" (March 2009)

Waukesha

Glen Toth MD. 403 N Grand Ave, Waukesha, WI 53186-4913. (262) 547-3055. A reader writes: "Excellent doctor. He tests the Free's (Free t3, Free t4), he prescribes Armour, he doses based on how you feel and not just on lab results, he is aware of the importance of your basal temperatures, he is up to speed on Adrenal Failure and he actually does the 24 hour Saliva Cortisol Test and not just the serum test. He listens to you - and doesn't treat you like ink on a piece of paper. He can also help you along in diet manipulation on your road to wellness which is an added benefit. His staff was also very friendly." (October 2006)
A reader writes:
"I agree with everything that has already been said and would like to add that Dr. Toth is both compassionate and understanding. I have a more complicated thyroid issue and he feels it is important to not only make me feel better through the use of Armor and Cytomel but to find the cause of my thyroid issue, which is that I don't convert T4 to T3 properly. Before finding him I was literally blown off by a top endo who said I am perfectly healthy, getting old and that there is no cure for being freezing cold or exhausted! This was after he saw that my Free T3 was low and out of range." (Added October 2007)

Waukesha

Dr. Debra Muth, Naturopathic Doctor, 403 North Grand Avenue, Waukesha WI, 53186, Phone/Fax: 262-547-3055 www.springcityhealthcentre.com
A reader writes: "I found this clinic on your website and wanted to share my success story. I was diagnosed with Hashi's 3 years ago and have been struggling ever since. After trying Armor, I discovered I had adrenal fatigue because of the terrible side effects I had after starting it. After visiting several doctors, I finally found this clinic and they treated my adrenal fatigue with sublingual hydrocortisone and my low Free T3 levels with slow release T3 from a compounding pharmacy (MD Custom RX in Glendale). It took some time but I am finally feeling like my old self again. I would highly recommend this clinic!" (Added October 2007)

Wausau

Dr. John Carroll, Aspirus Westhill Medical Specialists, 2720 Plaza Dr, Ste 1400, Wausau WI 54401, (715)847-2004 or 1-888-593-6250

"A hypothyroid co-worker recommended Dr. Carroll. I drive 50+ miles to see him, because he is great! My family doctor was only testing my blood once a year and he always told me I was fine - my levels were normal. I suspected all along that my medication needed to be adjusted. So I went to Dr. Carroll. He was thorough, talked to me, and adjusted my medication. My old doctor had me on a generic medication. Dr. Carroll switched me to a name-brand and writes "medically necessary" on my prescriptions so my insurance will cover the cost. He also had me come back for follow-up visits. He didn't stop until my levels were normal. Best of all, he asks me how I feel - he doesn't just go by the numbers. He adjusted my medication so precisely that he has me take a full pill 5 days a week and a half pill two days a week because I am one of those lucky people who falls just in between two doses (one dose was too high, the next too low). I feel great (FINALLY). He also knows I'm trying to conceive, and he told me to definitely come back to see him once I'm pregnant because he is aware how pregnancy can affect thyroid levels. If you live in the Central Wisconsin area, definitely check out Dr. Carroll!" (August 2007)

Wauwatosa

Margarita Hollingsworth, Other, Frodtert Memorial Hospital, Wauwatosa.

"Dr. Hollingsworth is a Urologist at Frodtert Hospital. She specializes in Women's sexual problems and bio-identical hormone replacement. She tested me, and although my TSH was in normal range she started me on Armour thyroid meds. Only 2 weeks on and I'm already feeling better. The weight is starting to come off, energy level is just starting to get better. I know it takes awhile. Great Doctor!" (August 2007)

Wauwatosa

Thomas Kelly -- no longer listed

Wisconsin Dells

Dr. Robert Waters, Race and Vine Street Box 357 Wisconsin Dells WI 53965 1-800-200-7178, www.watershealthcenter.com. A reader writes: "This is a Barnes doc--they prescribe natural whenever possible -- tend to be more open minded -- better listeners. Though I don't know personally about this doc, I just want to provide the option for people to find a doc that will Rx Armour."

Another reader writes:
He is already listed for Wisconsin Dells but the description is sparse. He is a wonderful listener and very familiar with body chemistry. He is determined to find the "real" cause of a problem. He spends a great deal of time with patients and has a gift for reassuring the patient that together they will find the problem and the solution. He was a life saver for my 18 year old daughter with a thyroid problem and for me as well.
